BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) apps have the potential to enhance health care service delivery. However, concerns regarding patients' confidentiality, privacy, and security consistently affect the adoption of mHealth apps. Despite this, no review has comprehensively summarized the findings of studies on this subject matter. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to investigate patients' perspectives and awareness of the confidentiality, privacy, and security of the data collected through mHealth apps...

BACKGROUND: HIV is a potent risk factor for tuberculosis (TB). Therefore, community-wide universal testing and treatment for HIV (UTT) could contribute to TB control, but evidence for this is limited. Community-wide TB screening can decrease population-level TB prevalence. Combining UTT with TB screening could therefore significantly impact TB control in sub-Saharan Africa, but to our knowledge there is no evidence for this combined approach. METHODS AND FINDINGS: HPTN 071 (PopART) was a community-randomised trial conducted between November 2013 to July 2018; 21 Zambian and South African communities (with a total population of approximately 1 million individuals) were randomised to arms A (community-wide UTT and TB screening), B (community-wide universal HIV testing with treatment following national guidelines and TB screening), or C (standard-of-care)...

BACKGROUND: Bone metastasis has various negative impacts. Activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QOL) can be significantly decreased, survival may be impacted, and medical expenses may increase. It is estimated that at least 5% cancer patients might be suffering from bone metastases. In 2016, we published the Comprehensive Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Bone Metastasis. Since then, the therapeutic outcomes for patients have gradually improved. As life expectancy is a major determinant of surgical intervention, the strategy should be modified if the prolongation of survival is to be achieved...

BACKGROUND: Anesthesia providers categorize patients utilizing the American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA-PS) classification originally created by the ASA in 1941. There is published variability and discordance among providers when assigning patient ASA scores in part due to the subjectivity of scoring utilizing patient medical conditions, but variability is also found using objective findings like BMI. To date, there are few studies evaluating the accuracy of anesthesia providers' ASA assignment based on objective body mass index (BMI) alone...

INTRODUCTION: Onychomycosis, a fungal nail infection, is associated with significant morbidity and negative impact on quality of life. Therefore, understanding associated risk factors may inform onychomycosis screening guidelines. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective study investigated common demographic and comorbidity risk factors among hospitalized patients using the National Inpatient Sample. METHODS: The 2003-2014 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was used to identify onychomycosis cases and age and sex matched controls in a 1:2 ratio...

IMPORTANCE: Kidney health has received increasing focus as part of comprehensive heart failure (HF) treatment efforts. However, the occurrence of clinically relevant kidney outcomes in contemporary populations with HF has not been well studied. OBJECTIVE: To examine rates of incident dialysis and acute kidney injury (AKI) among Medicare beneficiaries after HF hospitalization. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study evaluated adults aged 65 years or older who were hospitalized for HF across 372 sites in the Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure registry in the US between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2018...

The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of LR-5 vs combined LR-4 and LR-5 (LR-4/5) for HCC diagnosis. METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases through January 03, 2023 were searched for studies reporting the performance of LR-5 and combined LR-4/5 for HCC diagnosis, using CT/MRI LI-RADS version 2014, 2017, or 2018...

Current guidelines recommend different post-partum approaches of patients started on levothyroxine (LT4) during pregnancy. Objective We studied post-partum management of these patients and determined factors associated with long-term hypothyroidism. Methods Retrospective study performed in a tertiary center between 2014 and 2020, with LT4 initiation according to 2014 ETA recommendations. We performed multivariate logistic regression (MVR) and a Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to determine variables associated with long-term hypothyroidism and their optimal cut-offs...

The objective of this study was to ascertain the extent to which infants with CH have received timely and appropriate management within the first 3 years of life, following diagnosis through NBS in Alberta, Canada. Deidentified laboratory data were extracted between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2019 from Alberta Health administrative databases for infants born in this time frame...

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a mode of therapy in which the patients themselves actively participate in the care of their own disease. We examined a possible association of salt reduction before starting dialysis with PD technique survival. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 42 patients who started PD between April 2014 and March 2018. Participants were allocated to two groups based on their estimated daily salt intake before the initiation of dialysis: patients with an estimated daily salt intake <6 g/day were allocated to the appropriate salt intake group (AS group), while the rest were assigned to the high salt intake group (HS group)...

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic forced governments, multilateral public health organisations and research institutions to undertake research quickly to inform their responses to the pandemic. Most COVID-19-related studies required swift approval, creating ethical and practical challenges for regulatory authorities and researchers.
