A significant amount of European basic and clinical neuroscience research includes the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), mainly transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Two recent changes in the EU regulations, the introduction of the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) (2017/745) and the Annex XVI have caused significant problems and confusions in the brain stimulation field. The negative consequences of the MDR for non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) have been largely overlooked and until today, have not been consequently addressed by National Competent Authorities, local ethical committees, politicians and by the scientific communities...

Despite considerable progress in recent years, research in cardiac psychology is not widely translated into routine practice by clinical cardiologists or clinical health psychologists. Self-determination theory (SDT), which addresses how basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness contribute to the internalization of motivation, may help bridge this research-practice gap through its application to shared decision-making (SDM). This narrative review discusses the following: (a) brief background information on SDT and SDM, (b) the application of SDT to health behavior change and cardiology interventions, and (c) how SDT and SDM may be merged using a dissemination and implementation (D&I) framework...

Alite-ye'elimite-belite-ferrite cement (AYBFC) integrates the advantages of calcium sulfoaluminate cement and Portland cement, but its ultra-early strength needs to be further improved when applied to rush repair and construction works. In this study, the ultra-early strength of AYBFC was improved using lithium carbonate (Li2 CO3 ) and superplasticizer. The results showed that an appropriate amount of Li2 CO3 could significantly improve the ultra-early strength of AYBFC, since it was capable of promoting the hydration reaction of AYBFC...

BACKGROUND: Opioids are a first-line treatment for severe cancer pain. However, clinicians may be reluctant to prescribe opioids for patients with concurrent substance use disorders (SUD) or clinical concerns about non-prescribed substance use. MEASURES: Patient volume, 60-day retention rate, and use of sublingual buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder. INTERVENTION: We created the Palliative Harm Reduction and Resiliency Clinic, a palliative care clinic founded on harm reduction principles and including formal collaboration with addiction psychiatry...

Academic biobanks commonly report sustainability challenges, which may be exacerbated by a lack of information on biobank value. To better understand the costs and supported outputs that contribute to biobank value, we developed a systematic, generalizable methodology to determine biobank inputs and publications arising from biobank-supported research. We then tested this in a small cohort ( n = 12) of academic cancer biobanks in New South Wales, Australia. A proforma was developed to capture monetary and in-kind biobank costing data from biobank managers and publicly available sources...

A dissecting aneurysm in the P4 segment of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) is extremely rare, and its treatment is sometimes challenging. Endovascular parent artery occlusion (PAO) was performed for an unruptured P4 segment dissecting PCA aneurysm presenting with ischemic stroke and rapid growth. A 70-year-old man was rushed to our emergency department due to a right-sided headache and a visual field defect. Head magnetic resonance imaging showed a right occipital lobe ischemic stroke, with right PCA occlusion and aneurysm formation in the P4 segment...

BACKGROUND: In addition to having higher negative affect and lower positive affect overall, depressed individuals exhibit heightened affective reactivity to external stimuli than non-depressed individuals. Sleep may contribute to day-to-day fluctuations in depressed individuals, given that sleep disturbance is a common symptom of depression. Yet, little is known about changes in daily affect as a function of nightly sleep duration in depressed adults and non-depressed adults. The current study examined whether and how naturally-occurring sleep duration is associated with negative and positive affect, and how these associations differ between depressed vs...

Exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and formaldehyde from long-distance buses has been reported to adversely affect human health. This study investigates the concentrations of these five VOCs and evaluates their health risks to drivers and passengers on board. Ten trips from Taipei to Taichung were performed during the warm and cold seasons of 2021-2022. Two locations inside the bus were established to collect air samples by a 6-liter canister for drivers and passengers...

The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance landscape in the United States consists of a data flow that starts in the clinical setting and is maintained by a network of national and state public health laboratories. These organizations are well established, with robust methodologies to test and confirm antimicrobial susceptibility. Still, the bridge that guides the flow of data is often one directional and caught in a constant state of rush hour that can only be refined with improvements to infrastructure and automation in the data flow...

BACKGROUND: The HIV infection status among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China is a cause for concern. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) serves as a highly effective biomedical preventive measure against HIV infection. Substantial evidence has established an association between PEP utilization and risk behaviors among MSM, but whether the utilization of PEP has an impact on risk behaviors remains unknown. This study sought to elucidate the impact of PEP usage on risk behaviors among MSM and provide recommendations for developing targeted HIV prevention programs...

The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is a widely employed screening tool for the severity of cognitive impairment. Among the MMSE items, the pentagon copying test (PCT) requires participants to accurately replicate a sample of two interlocking pentagons. While the PCT is traditionally scored on a binary scale, there have been limited developments of granular scoring scale to assess task performance. In this paper, we present a novel three-stage algorithm, called Quantification of Interlocking Pentagons (QIP) which quantifies PCT performance by computing the areas of individual pentagons and their intersection areas, and a balance ratio between the areas of the two individual pentagons...
