BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based treatments gained popularity for migraine treatment. In this manuscript we report the results of a single-arm open pilot study that evaluated the impact of a multimodal web-based intervention combining home-based medication withdrawal, patients' education, and online mindfulness-based interventions. We aimed to address whether our program had the ability to show a change in the observed parameters and the study should therefore be intended as an early phase trial...

INTRODUCTION: Antibiotic misuse and overuse have led to the emergence of carbapenem-resistant bacteria. The global spread of resistance to the novel antibiotic combination ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) is becoming a severe problem. Antimicrobial peptide PAM-1 offers a novel approach for treating infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study explores its antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities and mechanisms against CZA-resistant Escherichia. Coli (E. coli) , evaluating its stability and biosafety as well...

Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to human health worldwide and its incidence continues to increase owing to the overuse of antibiotics and other factors. Macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin (EM) have immunomodulatory effects in addition to their antibacterial activity. Long-term, low-dose administration of macrolides has shown clinical benefits in treating the non-infectious inflammatory respiratory diseases. However, this practice may also increase the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria...

Diclazuril (DIC) is a broad-spectrum anti-coccidiosis drug of the triazine class, widely used in poultry farming. The overuse of DIC may lead to its accumulation in animal bodies, which may enter the food chain and threaten human health. In this work, we fabricated a stable Eu3+ -doped UiO-66 fluorescence sensor (EuUHIPA-30) for the sensitive detection of DIC. Among 20 veterinary drugs, the fluorescence of EuUHIPA-30 selectively responds to DIC, with a low detection limit (0.19 μM) and fast response (10 s)...

Antimicrobial resistance comes with high morbidity and mortality burden, and ultimately high impact on healthcare and social costs. Efficient strategies are needed to limit antibiotic overuse. This paper investigates the cost-effectiveness of testing patients with lower respiratory tract infection with procalcitonin, either at the point-of-care only or combined with lung ultrasonography. These diagnostic tools help detect the presence of bacterial pneumonia, guiding prescription decisions. The clinical responses of these strategies were studied in the primary care setting...

The Anti-Kickback Statute was passed by Congress in the 1970s to reduce the overuse of government-reimbursed medical services. It attempts to eliminate fraud, abuse, and waste of medical services by outlawing the incentive of personal gain when referring patients for government-funded services. Although safe harbors were written into the law to maintain transactions beneficial to society, they require strict adherence. Anti-Kickback Statute violations are subject to the whistleblower provision of the False Claims Act, and violations can yield significant civil and criminal penalties...

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a common foodborne pathogenic bacterium. With the overuse of antibiotics, an increasing proportion of drug-resistant strains are emerging, which puts enormous pressure on public health. In this study, a V. parahaemolyticus -specific phage, VP41s3, was isolated. The head length, width, and tail length of the phage were 77.7 nm, 72.2 nm, and 17.5 nm, respectively. It remained active in the temperature range of 30-50°C and pH range of 4-11. The lytic curve of phage VP41s3 showed that the host bacteria did not grow until 11 h under phage treatment at MOI of 1000, indicating that the phage had good bacteriostatic ability...

In Denmark, people are expected to take responsibility for their health, not least as their bodies age and they experience signs of physical or mental decline. Drawing on fieldwork among older Danes, I illustrate that an excessive focus on health gives rise to social and structural controversies and disparities, linking ideas of healthy behavior at the individual level with the societal framing of disease and aging. I argue that this emphasis contributes to the unwarranted diagnosis of bodily variations that naturally occur in the aging process, a phenomenon referred to as overdiagnosis, adding to a broader medicalization of old age...

Enterococcus faecalis is the primary species detected in cases of secondary persistent infection resulting from root canal therapy failure. Due to the overuse of antibacterial agents, E. faecalis has developed resistance to these drugs, making it challenging to treat clinical diseases caused by E. faecalis infection. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore new alternative drugs for treating E. faecalis infections. We aimed to clone and express the genes of phage endolysins, purify the recombinant proteins, and analyze their antibacterial activity, lysis profile, and ability to remove biofilm...
