BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ) suffer from comorbidities that substantially reduce their life expectancy. Socioeconomic inequalities could contribute to many of the negative health outcomes associated with SCZ. STUDY DESIGN: We investigated genome-wide datasets related to SCZ (52 017 cases and 75 889 controls) from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, household income (HI; N = 361 687) from UK Biobank, and 2202 medical endpoints assessed in up to 342 499 FinnGen participants...

INTRODUCTION: Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food-borne outbreaks and infection worldwide. Non-typhoid Salmonella (NTS) infections are common and remain a significant public health problem among important bacterial foodborne diseases. The current study aimed to establish the Non typhoid Salmonella infection and antimicrobial resistance status among selected patients at Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), Morogoro Region, Tanzania, to inform clinical care management and public health interventions...

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease of the small intestine triggered by the consumption of gluten-containing foods in individuals with a genetic predisposition. CD was a rare disease until 20 years ago, when the prevalence increased. Currently, there is no data on the prevalence of CD in high-risk adult populations in Indonesia, even though there is a trend of increasing gluten consumption. Therefore, basic research is needed to determine the magnitude of CD in high-risk adult patients in Indonesia while identifying clinical signs/symptoms, illness history, and lifestyle to determine factors associated with CD in Indonesia...

A group of children with clinical suspicion of dengue were assessed to determine if there was an overestimation of dengue compared with that of leptospirosis and leishmaniasis. This descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study, based on the active search of participants with acute febrile illness, was conducted at two pediatric hospitals. The collection of clinical and epidemiological data was performed using questionnaires, and laboratory tests specific for dengue were performed using immunochromatographic, serological, and molecular methods...

The lymphatic fluid is the conduit by which part of the tissue "omics" is transported to the draining lymph node for immunosurveillance. Following cannulation of the pre-nodal cervical and mesenteric afferent lymphatics, herein we investigate the lymph proteomic composition, uncovering that its composition varies according to the tissue of origin. Tissue specificity is also reflected in the dendritic cell-major histocompatibility complex class II-eluted immunopeptidome harvested from the cervical and mesenteric nodes...

BACKGROUND: Miliary Tuberculosis (TB) remains an important infectious disease that threatens human health. The clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of miliary TB are summarized in this study. METHODS: The clinical information of miliary TB patients between 2010 and 2022 was retrospectively analyzed. Patients with miliary TB were characterized and compared to adverse outcomes cases. Factors independently associated with adverse outcomes were determined via multivariate logistic regression analysis...

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation in Sudan is funded by the government. Cytomegalovirus prophylaxis is provided for patients who receive biological induction or have recipient-negative donor-positive cytomegalovirus serology. Doctor Selma Center for Kidney Diseases joined the national kidney transplant program in May 2019. Since then, we observed the frequent occurrence of cancer in patients who received modest immunosuppression without viral prophylaxis. METHODS: We retrospectively divided kidney transplant recipients between 2019 and 2021 into two groups according to cytomegalovirus prophylaxis and compared tumor occurrence rates...

BACKGROUND: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are preferred over warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib). However, their safety and effectiveness in patients with AFib and cancer are inconclusive. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study by emulating a target trial. Patients with a record of cancer (breast, prostate, or lung), newly diagnosed with AFib initiated DOACs or warfarin within 3 months after AFib diagnosis from the 2012-2019 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database were included...

Bladder cancer (BC), predominantly comprising urothelial carcinomas (UCs), ranks as the tenth most common cancer worldwide. UCs with variant histology (variant UC), including squamous differentiation, glandular differentiation, plasmacytoid variant, micropapillary variant, sarcomatoid variant, and nested variant, accounting for 5-10% of cases, exhibit more aggressive and advanced tumor characteristics compared to pure UC. The Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS), established in 2018, provides guidelines for the preoperative evaluation of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) using multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI)...

Irritable bowel syndrome is a gastrointestinal disorder that affects 15%-20% of the US population. Its symptoms can have negative effects on a person's quality of life, and its treatment can be associated with high medical costs. An emerging area of irritable bowel syndrome research concerns the relationship between this condition and the gut microbiome. The purpose of this article is not only to review irritable bowel syndrome, and the role that the microbiome can play in its symptoms, but also to examine new emerging pathways that could blaze the trail for more individualized treatments...

Although nurses and other healthcare professionals play a key role in preventing hospital-associated infections, studies show that infection control compliance rates have remained low. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase infection control compliance of hand hygiene and procedure room disinfection among endoscopy staff at a large urban medical center in Cincinnati, Ohio. This quality improvement project provided an education session on current evidence-based infection control guidelines to 20 participants, including registered nurses and technicians within the endoscopy department...

The emerging evidence of human infections with emerging viruses suggests their potential public health importance. A novel taxon of viruses named Statoviruses (for stool-associated Tombus-like viruses) was recently identified in the gastrointestinal tracts of multiple mammals. Here we report the discovery of respiratory Statovirus-like viruses (provisionally named Restviruses) from the respiratory tracts of five patients experiencing acute respiratory disease with Human coronavirus OC43 infection through the retrospective analysis of meta-transcriptomic data...
