Autopsy rates are declining globally, impacting cause-of-death (CoD) diagnoses and quality control. Postmortem metabolomics was evaluated for CoD screening using 4,282 human cases, encompassing CoD groups: acidosis, drug intoxication, hanging, ischemic heart disease (IHD), and pneumonia. Cases were split 3:1 into training and test sets. High-resolution mass spectrometry data from femoral blood were analyzed via orthogonal-partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) to discriminate CoD groups. OPLS-DA achieved an R2 = 0...

A juvenile rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) was live-stranded and rescued in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. From the results of diagnostic examinations, blood tests indicated that the dolphin was malnourished, dehydrated, and anemic. The dolphin died on sixth day of rescue despite treatment. At autopsy, 570g of foreign material, including 34 pieces of cellophanes and plastic debris (PD), were found in the forestomach. Additional gross findings, including some endoparasitism and presence of accessory spleens were also identified...

An analytical method for studying DNA degradation by electrophoresis after cell lysis and visualization of DNA fragments with fluorescent dye, comet assay, was used to evaluate the viability of the endothelial layer of human arterial grafts with the aim of identifying the procedure that will least damage the tissue before cryopreservation. Four groups of samples were studied: cryopreserved arterial grafts that were thawed in two different ways, slowly lasting 2 hours or rapidly for approx. 7 minutes. Arterial grafts that were collected as part of multiorgan procurement with minimal warm ischemia time...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Updated criteria for the clinical-MRI diagnosis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) have recently been proposed. However, their performance in individuals without symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) presentations is less defined. We aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of the Boston criteria version 2.0 for CAA diagnosis in a cohort of individuals ranging from cognitively normal to dementia in the community and memory clinic settings. METHODS: Fifty-four participants from the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging or Alzheimer's Disease Research Center were included if they had an antemortem MRI with gradient-recall echo sequences and a brain autopsy with CAA evaluation...

Astylus atromaculatus Blanchard is a native beetle of South America that feeds on pollen. During the summer of 2022-2023 in Argentina and Uruguay, an explosive infestation of these insects occurred in pastures in which ruminants were grazing. This was believed to be associated with a severe drought, which had significantly reduced the flowering of crops. Three farms in Uruguay and one in Argentina were visited to examine the flocks and perform autopsies. Affected sheep had watery diarrhea, anorexia, depression, and ruminal atony...

With the growing popularity of winter sports, it is necessary to pay more attention to the types of traumatic injuries that a person can sustain in various incidents related to their practice. We present a case in which an adult man died as a result of a collision with a tree while skiing. Although the deaths are associated with different types and severity of craniocerebral injuries in the majority of the cases, here we are dealing with an abdominal injury with rupture of the stomach, pancreas, and left renal artery...

Introduction Blast injuries in modern society often occur owing to terrorist attacks in confined spaces, particularly in urban settings, indoors, and in vehicles, leading to significant damage. Therefore, it is important to focus on blast injuries in confined spaces rather than in conventional open-field experiments. INTRODUCTION: Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease with public health implications. Mean age of onset is 68 years. Age-specific incidence declines after 80 years. This may arise from under-ascertainment or other biological features of the disease. Accurate characterisation of late-onset sCJD is important for early diagnosis, avoiding unnecessary investigations and improving ascertainment for public health purposes. OBJECTIVE: To phenotype the clinical features and investigation profile of sCJD in adults >80 years...

PURPOSE: Exome or genome sequencing (ES or GS) can identify genetic causes of otherwise unexplained congenital anomaly and perinatal death (PND) but is not routine practice. The evidence base for 'genomic autopsy' following termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly (TOPFA) and PND has been synthesised to determine the value of this investigation. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies meeting pre-specified inclusion criteria, and containing ≥10 cases of TOPFA or PND (with or without major congenital abnormality), where ES or GS was conducted...

A 15-year-old male was attacked by a large white shark while surfing. CT examination revealed an above-knee amputation of the right lower extremity with stripping of soft tissues from the groin distally. 3-dimensional volume rendering did not show any fragments of shark teeth but did reveal linear gouges, areas of shaving of cortical bone and an inverted 'V'-shaped defect at the distal margin of the femoral shaft. At autopsy these injuries were confirmed in addition to areas with fine parallel cross-striations matching the marginal serrations of the teeth of a white shark...

BACKGROUND: Men with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) may have an earlier onset of intracerebral hemorrhage, and a more hemorrhagic disease course compared to women. In this cohort study we investigated sex differences in histopathological markers associated with amyloid-β burden and hemorrhage in cognitively impaired individuals and patients with CAA, using neuropathological data from two autopsy databases. METHODS: First, we investigated presence of parenchymal (Thal score) and vascular amyloid-β (CAA severity score) in cognitively impaired individuals from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) neuropathology database...

The majority of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) experience a loss in their sense of smell and accumulate insoluble α-synuclein aggregates in their olfactory bulbs (OB). Subjects affected by a SARS-CoV-2-linked illness (COVID-19) also frequently experience hyposmia. We previously postulated that microglial activation as well as α-synuclein and tau misprocessing can occur during host responses following microbial encounters. Using semiquantitative measurements of immunohistochemical signals, we examined OB and olfactory tract specimens collected serially at autopsies between 2020 and 2023...

This review article highlights the crucial role of organ weights and dimensions as key indicators in forensic diagnosis. Organ weight changes serve as valuable markers for pathological conditions, aiding forensic doctors in interpreting autopsy findings. The review emphasizes the importance of precision in establish- ing organ reference values, considering factors like population-specific norms and correlations with body parameters. Furthermore, it explores the impact of obesity on organ weights, emphasizing the need for updated databases that accurately reflect diverse populations...
