The aim of this study was to describe the clinical findings and outcome in suicidal attempted due to intravenous injection of kerosene. This case series study was conducted in the Department of Internal Medicine, Shohada Ashayer Hospital, Khorramabad, Iran during 8 years. Ten IV drug addicts who intravenously injected themselves with Kerosene were collected. All patients admitted in ICU, completely monitored for cardiopulmonary status and consulted with pulmonologist, cardiologist, neurologist, anesthesiologist and dermatologist...

Although developed countries have largely eliminated the problem of paraffin ingestion in young children, many developing countries have not. Paraffin, used as a home energy source, particularly in rural area, accounts for a significant percent of paediatric poisoning and can lead to serious health problems, complications and death. This paper presents a review done by a nurse clinician concerned about the number of paediatric poisonings she saw in the hospital in one developing country, Botswana. The first stage of solving the problem is presented in which she established the extent and epidemiology of the issue...

Organophosphorus (OP) pesticide self-poisoning is a major clinical and public health problem across much of rural Asia and responsible for two thirds of suicidal deaths. However, clinical reports or evidence for the management of mixed poisoning are lacking. Patients are often treated based on the type of symptoms they exhibit, and there are no specific guidelines available to treat mixed poisoning. In this case series, we report 3 acute OP poisoning cases with mixed poisons such as organochlorine, fungicide, copper sulfate, and kerosene...

Lung cysts in children are usually of congenital origin. Necrotising pneumonias, trauma, cystic fibrosis and kerosene poisoning may be the cause of acquired cysts in the lungs during childhood. We describe a child who presented with pneumothorax and was later discovered to have a cyst in his right lung. The cyst was resected and on histology found to be of inflammatory origin with no epithelial cell lining i.e. a pseudo-cyst. The immuno-histochemical staining of the inflammatory cells from the pseudo-cyst wall showed them to be predominantly histiocytes i...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the types of hydrocarbon ingested by children and identify factors associated with hydrocarbons ingestion. PATIENTS AND METHODS: It was a hospital based case control study in which medical records of sixty seven children with hydrocarbon ingestion, admitted through emergency department between January 2001 to December 2005 of Aga Khan Hospital were reviewed. Variables such as age, sex, types of hydrocarbons, amount ingested, socioeconomic status, family size, number of children, type of containers, trend of ingestion during hot weather, length of stay at hospital along with the outcomes were evaluated...

A serious and common accident in rural Kenyan homesteads is accidental ingestion of paraffin when it has been mistaken for water and offered to a young child. Here we report the incidence, parental practices and outcome of severe paraffin poisoning, requiring admission at Kilifi District Hospital, Kenya. Over a 2-year period, 48 children (0.5% of all admissions) were admitted with kerosene poisoning, constituting 62% of all poisoning cases. All cases were accidental. Ten per cent had induced vomiting. One child (2%) died...

OBJECTIVE: Poisoning is a major problem in the paediatric population. In view of the paucity of literature on the subject matter in the northeastern part of Nigeria, this retrospective study was undertaken to describe the epidemiological features of accidental poisoning in children less than 13 years old who were admitted to the Emergency Paediatrics Unit (EPU) of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri. The specific objectives included the determination of the age range most vulnerable, the principal agents of poisoning, the annual pattern of occurrence, the commonly administered home remedy and the examination of the need for preventive strategies in this part of the country...

Despite the major reduction in fatal paediatric poisonings that has been achieved in industrialised countries over the last few decades, unintentional paediatric poisoning remains a major public health issue worldwide. In this article, we aim to provide clinicians dealing with poisoned children an overview of the problem and specific guidance on the identification and management of significant poisoning. Substances most frequently ingested by children in the developed world include household chemicals, medication, and plants...

Despite the critical role of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in cortical function and development, no long-term studies have been conducted in humans on the long-term sequelae of the disruption of the cholinergic system in early childhood. We report a neuropsychological assessment of healthy school-aged children, who had been hospitalized in infancy following exposure to organophosphate pesticides, compared with children exposed to other toxins such as kerosene, and age- and sex-matched non-exposed children. Although overall, the children seem to have overcome the acute one-time exposure incident, and they all attend regular schools, a finer assessment of specific cognitive abilities indicates they are impaired compared with the matched controls...

INTRODUCTION: Paraffin (kerosene) ingestion is the most common form of childhood poisoning in most developing countries. Despite this, there is a paucity of toxicoepidemiological data which could potentially be used in measures to reduce preventable exposures. This article reports on the patterns of hospital admissions resulting from paraffin exposure in Zimbabwe. METHODS: All cases of paraffin ingestion admitted to eight major referral hospitals in Zimbabwe from January 1998 to December 1999 (inclusive), were identified using ICD-9 codes and ward registers and relevant information recorded on a standard data collection sheet...

Seasonal variation in poisoning was observed with more cases in the summer months. Organophosphorus compounds (42%), drugs (25%), and zinc phosphide (6.5%) were common poisonings in total and in adult populations, whereas kerosene was the most frequent poisoning in pediatric age group...
