OBJECTIVE: Despite the effort to increase the proportion of patients starting dialysis on native accesses, many of them are still dialyzed on tunnelled catheter. Catheter-related complications are often serious and responsible for re-hospital admission, high morbidity and mortality. Several multicenter trials have reported results in the use of tunnelled dialysis catheter (TDC). However, few single-center studies have been published to verify the outcome from real-world experience. This study presents our center's experience in managing such patients in the context of relevant literature...

In patients on peritoneal dialysis, the cutaneous emergency (exit-site) represents a potential access route to the peritoneum; consequently, it can become a site for microbial infections. These infections, initially localized to the exit-site, may spread to the peritoneum causing peritonitis, which is the most common cause of drop-out from peritoneal dialysis and transition to hemodialysis. Peritoneal catheters have dacron caps which have the function of counteracting the traction of the catheter itself and at the same time acting as a barrier for microorganisms, preventing the spread towards the peritoneum...

OBJECTIVE: This article provides a systematic approach to performing a vaginal natural-orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) sacrocolpopexy (SCP) to create an anatomically aligned vaginal axis, an intraoperatively adjustable apical suspension, and variable compartment tensioning. METHODS: The technique presented for vNOTES SCP focuses on: (1) retroperitoneal tunneling; (2) direct sacrum access below the S-1 level, using uterosacral-ligament guidance; (3) transvaginal tensioning of the mesh to ensure both adequate vaginal length and cuff elevation using the DZOH apical-suspension technique; (4) circumvention of intrapelvic laparoscopic suturing; and (5) near-total peritoneal coverage of the mesh arms...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary omental torsion is uncommon, mimicking appendicitis and other acute abdominal pathologies. It often escapes diagnosis on imaging investigation or conventional open laparotomy. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of laparoscopy on the various parameters of this entity, including incidence, diagnosis, and treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was performed, including PubMed and Scopus databases, without a time limit, following the PRISMA principles...

Septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) is a rare condition that comprise less than 1% of all joint infections. We report a case of severe bilateral septic arthritis of the SCJ in a patient with end-stage renal disease on peritoneal dialysis. A 44 year-old female presented with right SCJ infection one month after recovering from a tenckhoff catheter exit-site infection. She completed six weeks of antibiotics however this progressed to bilateral SCJ septic arthritis with osteomyelitis necessitating multiple surgical debridement and excision of bilateral clavicular heads...

To evaluate the overall prevalence of FIP infection in cats in mainland China and associated risk factors, studies on the prevalence of FIP conducted from 1 January 2008 to 20 December 2023 were retrieved from five databases-CNKI, Wanfang, PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect-and comprehensively reviewed. The 21 studies selected, with a total of 181,014 samples, underwent a rigorous meta-analysis after quality assessment. The results revealed a 2% prevalence of FIP (95% CI: 1-2%) through the random-effects model, showing considerable heterogeneity (I2 = 95...

The premortem understanding of the role of feline coronavirus (FeCoV) in the lungs of cats is limited as viruses are seldom inspected in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) specimens of small animal patients. This study retrospectively analyzed the prevalence of FeCoV in BAL samples from cats with atypical lower airway and lung disease, as well as the clinical characteristics, diagnostic findings, and follow-up information. Of 1162 clinical samples submitted for FeCoV RT-nPCR, 25 were BAL fluid. After excluding 1 case with chronic aspiration, FeCoV was found in 3/24 (13%) BAL specimens, with 2 having immunofluorescence staining confirming the presence of FeCoV within the cytoplasm of alveolar macrophages...

Although appendicitis has been described for more than 300 years, its optimal management remains a topic of active investigation. Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of peritonitis in children, and rates of perforated appendicitis are much higher in children than in adults. Increased risk for perforated appendicitis in children is related to a delay in diagnosis due to age, size, access to care, and more. Surgical options include immediate appendectomy versus nonoperative management with intravenous antibiotics ± a drainage procedure, with a subsequent interval appendectomy...

Using an Ig H chain conferring specificity for N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (GlcNAc), we developed transgenic (VHHGAC39 TG) mice to study the role of self-antigens in GlcNAc-reactive B-1 B cell development. In VHHGAC39 TG mice, GlcNAc-reactive B-1 B cell development during ontogeny and in adult bone marrow was normal. However, adult TG mice exhibited a block at transitional-2 immature B cell stages, resulting in impaired allelic exclusion and accumulation of a B cell subset coexpressing endogenous Ig gene rearrangements...

In 1996, continuous renal replacement therapy was added to the list of nephrology requirements. Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T cell therapy has produced revolutionary success in hematological cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. Nonetheless, its translation to solid tumors faces challenges due to manufacturing complexities, short-lived in vivo persistence, and transient therapeutic impact. We introduce 'Drydux' - an innovative macroporous biomaterial scaffold designed for rapid, efficient in-situ generation of tumor-specific CAR T cells. The International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas charts the availability and capacity of kidney care globally. In the North America and the Caribbean region, the Atlas can identify opportunities for kidney care improvement, particularly in Caribbean countries where structures for systematic data collection are lacking. In this third iteration, respondents from 12 of 18 countries from the region reported a 2-fold higher than global median prevalence of dialysis and transplantation, and a 3-fold higher than global median prevalence of dialysis centers...

OBJECTIVE: Vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) is an emerging surgical procedure that combines the advantages of the vaginal approach with laparoscopic vision and instrumentation [1]. Shorter hospitalization and lower postoperative pain associated to vNOTES [2] may be explained by the advantages of this innovative surgical approach (such as absence of abdominal incisions, shorter operating time, lower insufflation pressure) [2;3]. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation allows to preserve reproductive and endocrine functions in young women with oncological disease at risk of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) caused by gonadotoxic treatments [4]...
