The incorporation of functionalized nanofillers into polymers via photopolymerization approach has gained significant attention in recent years due to the unique properties of the resulting composite materials. Surface modification of nanofillers plays a crucial role in their compatibility and polymerization behavior within the polymer matrix during photopolymerization. This review focuses on the recent developments in surface modification of various nanofillers, enabling their integration into polymer systems through photopolymerization...

Increasing threats of air pollution prompt the design of air purification systems. As a promising initiative defense strategy, nanocatalysts are integrated to catalyze the detoxification of specific pollutants. However, it remains a grand challenge to tailor versatile nanocatalysts to cope with diverse pollutants in practice. Here, we report a nanozyme metabolism system to realize broad-spectrum protection from air pollution. Atomic K-modified carbon nitride featuring flavin oxidase-like and peroxidase-like activities was synthesized to initiate nanozyme metabolism...

Due to the difficulty in obtaining highly branched rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) type pectin, the relationship between the extent of RG-I branching (EB) of pectin and prebiotic/immunomodulatory activity has not been systematically investigated. Moreover, it is only possible to establish a structure-activity relationship using pectin that is highly purified and accurately characterized. In this study, a homogeneous highly branched RG-I type pectin (LBP-P4, a final product) with dual proliferative effects on Bifidobacterium and macrophage was effectively purified for the first time using enzyme hydrolysis combined with ultrafiltration...

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has created serious health problems worldwide. The most effective way to prevent the occurrence of new epidemic outbreaks is vaccination. One of the modern and effective approaches to vaccine development is the use of virus-like particles (VLPs). The aim of the study is to develop a technology for production of VLP based on recombinant SARS-CoV-2 proteins (E, M, N and S) in insect cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Synthetic genes encoding coronavirus proteins E, M, N and S were used...

Here we present, for the first time, the selective adsorption of denatured proteins using a metal-organic framework (MOF), demonstrating promising potential for protein purification. Typical proteins, such as lysozyme and carbonic anhydrase B, enter the pores of MIL-101 through their narrow apertures when they are denatured to an unfolded state. Selective adsorption is achieved by finely tuning two key features: the sizes of the aperture and cage of the MOF nanopores, which are responsible for sorting unfolded polypeptide chains and inhibiting the translocation of the native form into the pores, respectively...

Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is a strongly corrosive, highly toxic, and highly dangerous mineral acid. Burns with over 1% total body surface area (TBSA) caused by anhydrous HF can lead to deep tissue damage, hypocalcaemia, poisoning, even death. In recent years, HF has become one of the most common substances causing chemical burns and ranks as the leading cause of death from chemical burns. Herein, we report a rare case with 91% TBSA burns caused by 35% HF. The patient developed complications such as shock, severe hypocalcaemia, metabolic acidosis, and respiratory failure...

Nitrous oxide (N2 O), as the third largest greenhouse gas in the world, also has great applications in industry, so the purification of N2 O from N2 in industrial tail gas is a crucial process for achieving environmental protection and giving full play to its economic value. Based on the polarity difference of N2 O and N2 , N2 O adsorption was researched on DMOF series materials with different polarities and methyl numbers of the ligand. N2 O adsorption at 0.1 bar is enhanced, attributed to an increase of the methyl group densities at the benzenedicarboxylate linker...

Chemoselective oxidation of aromatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes (>45 examples) to their corresponding carboxylic acids has been developed. Potassium tert -butoxide acts as an oxygen source during this transformation that delivers the corresponding acids without chromatographic purifications. The use of bench-top reagents, operational simplicity, and high level of chemo-selectivity with respect to oxidation of the least preferred aldehyde functionality, in the presence of more susceptible functional groups, are some of the highlights of this strategy...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review endeavours to explore the aetiopathogenesis and impact of severe hypertriglyceridemia (SHTG) and chylomicronaemia on cardiovascular, and pancreatic complications and summarizes the novel pharmacological options for management. RECENT FINDINGS: SHTG, although rare, presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Familial chylomicronaemia syndrome (FCS), is the rare monogenic form of SHTG, associated with increased acute pancreatitis (AP) risk, whereas relatively common multifactorial chylomicronaemia syndrome (MCS) leans more towards cardiovascular complications...

Mineral elements including calcium, iron, and zinc play crucial roles in human health. Their deficiency causes public health risk globally. Commercial mineral supplements have limitations; therefore, alternatives with better solubility, bioavailability, and safety are needed. Chelates of food-derived peptides and mineral elements exhibit advantages in terms of stability, absorption rate, and safety. However, low binding efficiency limits their application. Extensive studies have focused on understanding and enhancing the chelating activity of food-derived peptides with mineral elements...

Candida glabrata is an opportunistic pathogen that may cause serious infections in an immunocompromised host. C. glabrata cell wall proteases directly interact with host cells and affect yeast virulence and host immune responses. This protocol describes methods to purify β-1,3-glucan-bonded cell wall proteases from C. glabrata . These cell wall proteases are detached from the cell wall glucan network by lyticase treatment, which hydrolyzes β-1,3-glucan bonds specifically without rupturing cells...

One-step He purification from natural gas represents a crucial solution for addressing the global He shortages. The prevailing method to produce high-grade He involves cryogenic distillation and ultralow temperature adsorption processes, which is highly cost- and energy-intensive. Separating and purifying He at ambient temperature is a great challenge because the fundamental limitation lies in the boiling point, polarizability, and kinetic diameters of CH4 /N2 /He gases. In this study, we seek to implement a relay adsorption strategy using Ni(ina)2 and MIL-100(Cr) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to produce high-purity He from ternary mixtures (CH4 , N2 , and He) at ambient temperature...
