We experimentally realized a high-speed nested anti-resonant nodeless fiber (NANF) transmission with the assistance of the polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and probabilistic shaping (PS) technology. In this system, a low-complexity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) real-valued equalizer (RVE) is integrated with decision-directed carrier phase estimation (DDCPE), which is robust against the IQ cross talk and a tiny phase disturbance between PS symbols. By using the proposed MIMO-RVEDDCPE, the 60-Gbaud PDM-PS-256QAM signal has been delivered through 2-km NANF satisfying the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold...

Synthetic cells can be constructed from diverse molecular components, without the design constraints associated with modifying 'living' biological systems. This can be exploited to generate cells with abiotic components, creating functionalities absent in biology. One example is magnetic responsiveness, the activation and modulation of encapsulated biochemical processes using a magnetic field, which is absent from existing synthetic cell designs. This is a critical oversight, as magnetic fields are uniquely bio-orthogonal, noninvasive, and highly penetrative...

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer (OC) is the second most commonly seen cancer in the US, and patients with OC are commonly diagnosed in the advanced stage. Research into the molecular mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets of OC is becoming increasingly urgent. In our study, we worked to discover the role of TRIM44 in OC development. OBJECTIVE: This study explored whether the overexpression of TRIM44 mediates the NF-kB pathway to promote the progression of OC. METHODS: A TRIM44 overexpression model was constructed in SKOV3 cells, and the proliferation ability of the cells was detected using the CCK-8 assay...

This study found that the genes, PPD-H1 and ELF3, control the acceleration of plant development under speed breeding, with important implications for optimizing the delivery of climate-resilient crops. Speed breeding is a tool to accelerate breeding and research programmes. Despite its success and growing popularity with breeders, the genetic basis of plant development under speed breeding remains unknown. This study explored the developmental advancements of barley genotypes under different photoperiod regimes...

Desert ants stand out as some of the most intriguing insect navigators, having captured the attention of scientists for decades. This includes the structure of walking trajectories during goal approach and search behaviour for the nest and familiar feeding sites. We analyse such trajectories with regard to changes in walking direction. The directional change of the ants is quantified, i.e. an angle θ between trajectory increments of a given arclength λ is computed. This was done for different length scales λ, according to our goal of analysing desert ant path characteristics with respect to length scale...

Blastomas, characterized by a mixture of mesenchymal, epithelial, and undifferentiated blastematous components, are rare malignant neoplasms originating from precursor blast cells. This review focuses on digestive system blastomas in adult patients, including gastroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, and pancreatoblastoma. Gastroblastoma is a biphasic, epitheliomesenchymal tumor, with only sixteen cases reported to date. In addition to the characteristic histology, metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 - glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1 gene fusion is typical, although recently novel ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1 - c-terminal binding protein 1 and patched 1 - glioma-associated oncogene homolog 2 fusions have been described...

BACKGROUND: While interactions in nature are inherently local, ecological models often assume homogeneity across space, allowing for generalization across systems and greater mathematical tractability. Density-dependent disease models are a prominent example of models that assume homogeneous interactions, leading to the prediction that disease transmission will scale linearly with population density. In this study, we examined how the scale of larval butterfly movement interacts with the resource landscape to influence the relationship between larval contact and population density in the Baltimore checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton)...

The aim of the current study was to map the genetic diversity in the haemagglutinin (HA) glycoprotein of influenza A viruses (IAVs) of the H9N2 subtype. Twenty-five H9N2 IAVs were isolated from broiler chickens from March to July 2019. The HA gene was amplified, and phylogenetic analysis was performed to determine the evolutionary relationship. Important antigenic amino acid residues of HA attributed to immune escape and zoonotic potential were compared among H9N2 IAVs. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that sublineage B2 under the G1 lineage in Pakistan was found to be diversified, and newly sequenced H9N2 isolates were nested into two clades (A and B)...

Solitary bees and wasps that nest in cavities in tree trunks are important components of terrestrial ecosystems, providing pollination services, and in the case of wasps, the regulation of their prey populations. However, little is known about the vertical strata where bees and wasps build their nests. This is especially the case of urban forest remnants in the Amazon, which is relevant in the context of the global crisis in insect losses. We investigated the existence of vertical stratification in the nesting of solitary bees and wasps in an urban forest in Rio Branco, state of Acre, in the western Brazilian Amazon...
