In mammals, gonadal somatic cell lineage differentiation determines the development of the bipotential gonad into either the ovary or testis. Sertoli cells, the only somatic cells in the spermatogenic tubules, support spermatogenesis during gonadal development. During embryonic Sertoli cell lineage differentiation, relevant genes, including WT1 , GATA4 , SRY , SOX9 , AMH , PTGDS , SF1 , and DMRT1 , are expressed at specific times and in specific locations to ensure the correct differentiation of the embryo toward the male phenotype...

Agriculture plays a critical role in ensuring food and nutrition security, livelihood, and rural employment in Nepal. Despite substantial investments and institutional reforms, irrigation projects have faced consistently low performance. While existing studies have shed light on technical aspects of irrigation performance, they often focus on specific themes rather than holistic evaluations of sustainability. This research systematically assesses barriers and challenges to effective irrigation water management in Nepal by assessing and ranking the challenges faced by three irrigation systems in western Nepal: Mahakali, Rani Jamara Kulariya, and Babai...

The last 20 years have seen substantial improvements in fertility and hormone preservation and restoration technologies for a growing number of cancer survivors. However, further advancements are required to fill the gaps for those who cannot use current technologies or to improve the efficacy and longevity of current fertility and hormone restoration technologies. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) followed by ovarian tissue transplantation (OTT) offers those unable to undergo ovarian stimulation for egg retrieval and cryopreservation an option that restores both fertility and hormone function...

BACKGROUND Cryopreservation preserves male fertility, crucial in oncology, advanced age, and infertility. However, it damages sperm motility, membrane, and DNA. Zinc (Zn), an antioxidant, shows promise in improving sperm quality after thawing, highlighting its potential as a cryoprotectant in reproductive medicine. MATERIAL AND METHODS Gradient concentration of ZnSO₄ (0, 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 µM) was added in the Glycerol-egg yolk-citrate (GEYC) cryopreservative medium as an extender. Alterations in sperm viability and motility parameters after cryopreservation were detected in each group...

Chlainomonas (Chlamydomonadales, Chlorophyta) is one of the four genera of snow algae known to produce annual pink or red blooms in alpine snow. No Chlainomonas species have been successfully cultured in the laboratory, but diverse cell types have been observed from many field-collected samples, from multiple species. The diversity of morphologies suggests these algae have complex life cycles with changes in ploidy. Over 7 years (2017-2023), we observed seasonal blooms dominated by a Chlainomonas species from late spring through the summer months on a snow-on-lake habitat in an alpine basin in the North Cascade Mountains of Washington, USA...

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid hormone that was initially known only for regulating calcium and phosphorus levels and maintaining bone health. However, it was later discovered that many organs express vitamin D metabolizing enzymes and have a ligand for vitamin D, which regulates the expression of an extensive assortment of genes. As a result, vitamin D is indispensable for the proper function of organs, and its deficiency is believed to be a critical factor in symptoms and disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, and cancers...

Community weighted mean trait, i.e., functional composition, has been extensively used for upscaling of individual traits to the community functional attributes and ecosystem functioning in recent years. Yet, the importance of intraspecific trait variation relative to species turnover in determining changes in CWM still remains unclear, especially under nutrient enrichment scenarios. In this study, we conducted a global data synthesis analysis and three nutrient addition experiments in two sites of alpine grassland to reveal the extent to which species turnover and ITV contribute to shift in CWM in response to nutrient enrichment...

Cilia and Wnt signaling have a complex relationship, wherein Wnt regulates cilia and, conversely, cilia may affect Wnt signaling. Recently, it was shown that Wnt receptors are present in flagella, primary cilia, and multicilia, where they transmit an intraciliary signal that is independent of β-catenin. Intraciliary Wnt signaling promotes ciliogenesis, affecting male fertility, adipogenesis, and mucociliary clearance. Wnt also stimulates the beating of motile cilia, highlighting that these nanomotors, too, are chemosensory...

Within feminist literature from the early 1970s to this day, assisted reproductive technologies have been largely known to divide, replace or eliminate biological motherhood. For example, while in the past biological motherhood was considered a continuous experience, in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and IVF using egg donation allowed a split between two biological mothers, one providing eggs (genetic mother) and the other one gestation (gestational mother). This split was considered irreparable: the genetic mother could not be also gestational, and vice versa...

Diphenhydramine (DPH) is an antihistamine drug. It has been frequently detected in the environment, because it is not completely degraded in wastewater treatment plants. Recent studies have shown the adverse effects of DPH exposure to various aquatic organisms; however, its chronic effects on fish have been poorly elucidated. In this study, several pairs of mature Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) were exposed to DPH for a long period to determine the effects of DPH exposure on the subsequent generations, number of spawned and fertilized eggs, expression of sex-related genes, feeding behavior, embryo development, hatching rate, malformations among the hatched larvae, and mortality rate...

Ammonia inhibition is a common issue encountered in anaerobic digestion (AD) when treating nitrogen-rich substrates. This study proposed a novel approach, the electrodialysis-integrated AD (ADED) system, for in-situ recovery of ammonium (NH4 + ) while simultaneously enhancing AD performance. The ADED reactor was operated at two different NH4 + -N concentrations (5,000 mg/L and 10,000 mg/L) to evaluate its performance against a conventional AD reactor. The results indicate that the ADED technology effectively reduced the NH4 + -N concentration to below 2,000 mg/L, achieving this with a competitive energy consumption...
