Biological regulation often depends on reversible reactions such as phosphorylation, acylation, methylation, and glycosylation, but rarely halogenation. A notable exception is the iodination and deiodination of thyroid hormones. Here, we report detection of bromotyrosine and its subsequent debromination during Drosophila spermatogenesis. Bromotyrosine is not evident when Drosophila express a native flavin-dependent dehalogenase that is homologous to the enzyme responsible for iodide salvage from iodotyrosine in mammals...

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the most prevalent autoimmune disease in reproductive years, exhibits a higher incidence in females, suggesting involvement of estrogens, genetics and environmental factors in disease onset. Literature shows smaller families in RA patients, driving increased interest in Assisted Reproductive Techniques. AREAS COVERED: This review elucidates how immunotolerance mechanisms contribute to favorable pregnancy outcomes in RA, emphasizing the need for a careful pregnancy planning to mitigate fetal complications and postnatal flares, which surpass those in the general population...

Honey bees are important plant pollinators and honey producers. Contamination of the environment with metals can lead to a decline in honey bee populations. Copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) salts are commonly used as fungicides and foliar fertilizers. In this study, we investigated the effects of 10-day chronic oral exposure to different concentrations of Cu (CuSO4) and Zn (ZnCl2) on survival and feeding rates of Carniolan honey bees in laboratory conditions. We found that mortality in honey bee workers increased in a concentration-dependent manner and that Cu (lethal concentration [LC50] = 66 mg/l) was more toxic than Zn (LC50 = 144 mg/l)...

The peak incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) coincides with a woman's prime reproductive years. The management of IBD during pregnancy can be challenging for healthcare professionals, underpinning the need for a multi-disciplinary approach with shared decision-making with the patient. Pre-conception counselling can address patient concerns, improve pregnancy specific IBD patient knowledge and provide a personalized risk assessment, to ensure optimal maternal and fetal outcomes. Most women with IBD have fertility rates comparable with the general population, although voluntary childlessness is common among women with IBD...

Doxorubicin (DOX) can be applied to treat several cancers. DOX-induced oxidative stress causes testicular damage. Diosmin (DIO), as a potent antioxidant, reduces many drugs' side effects. We determined DIO therapeutic effects on DOX-related testicular toxicity. Forty rats were assigned to five groups as control, DOX (2.5 mg/kg six i.p. injections at equal intervals over two weeks), DOX + DIO (25, 50, 100 mg/kg, orally, daily, for two weeks) groups. Oxidative and antioxidant markers, fertility parameters levels, sperm parameters, and a histopathological examination were analyzed...

The aim of this review is to discuss the several interconnections between thyroid autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes in terms of epidemiology, immunoserology, genetic predisposition, and pathogenic mechanisms. We will also analyze the impact of these conditions on both male and female fertility. A literature search was carried out using the MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and Clinical Trials Registry databases with a combination of keywords. It was found that the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) varied in different countries and ethnic groups from 7 to 35% in both sexes...

Elephantgrass stands out for its high potential for forage production in different tropical and subtropical regions. In most properties, it is cultivated intensively with high doses of mineral fertilizers, mainly nitrogen, which makes production expensive and less sustainable. In this context, the mixtures of elephantgrass with forage legumes can make the system more efficient and with less environmental impact. Thus, the objective is to evaluate elephantgrass-based grazing systems, with or without a legume in terms of sward characteristics, herbage accumulation and nutritional value of pastures during one, agricultural year...

During mammalian oocyte meiosis, spindle migration and asymmetric cytokinesis are unique steps for the successful polar body extrusion. The asymmetry defects of oocytes will lead to the failure of fertilization and embryo implantation. In present study, we reported that an actin nucleating factor Formin-like 2 (FMNL2) played critical roles in the regulation of spindle migration and organelle distribution in mouse and porcine oocytes. Our results showed that FMNL2 mainly localized at the oocyte cortex and periphery of spindle...

Hemophilia A is a rare bleeding disorder with variable expressivity and allelic heterogeneity. Despite the advancement of prenatal diagnostics and molecular studies, the number of studies reviewing the reproductive choices of hemophilia A carriers and affected individuals remains limited. Through this retrospective review, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of hemophilia A-affected individuals' clinical and molecular characteristics, as well as the reproductive choices of the at-risk couples. A total of 122 individuals harboring likely causative F8 gene alterations from 64 apparently unrelated families attending three centers between 3/2000 and 3/2023 were included in this study...

Moiré superlattices have become a fertile playground for topological Chern insulators, where the displacement field can tune the quantum geometry and Chern number of the topological band. However, in experiments, displacement field engineering of spontaneous symmetry-breaking Chern bands has not been demonstrated. Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) has been proposed as a measure to enhance the carbon (C)-sequestration potential and fertility of soils. The effects of this practice on the soil phosphorus (P) pools and the general mechanisms affecting microbial P cycling, as well as plant P uptake are not well understood. Here, the impact of ERW on soil P availability and microbial P cycling functional groups and root P-acquisition traits were explored through a 2-year wollastonite field addition experiment in a tropical rubber plantation...

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors who have been treated for cancer during childhood and adolescence are at great risk of the physical, psychological, and social consequences of cancer and its associated treatments. However, compliance with long-term follow-up is low. One possible explanation is that follow-up care fails to meet the expectations of AYA survivors. This study explored the specific supportive care needs of AYA survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer five years post-diagnosis...

Understanding the relationship between plant diversity and invasibility is essential in invasion ecology. Species-rich communities are hypothesized to be more resistant to invasions than species-poor communities. However, while soil microorganisms play a crucial role in regulating this diversity-invasibility relationship, the effects of plant competition mode and soil nutrient status on their role remain unclear. To address this, we conducted a two-stage greenhouse experiment. Soils were first conditioned by growing nine native species separately in them for 1 year, then mixed in various configurations with soils conditioned using one, three, or six species, respectively...

To fertilize eggs, sperm must pass through narrow, complex channels filled with viscoelastic fluids in the female reproductive tract. While it is known that the topography of the surfaces plays a role in guiding sperm movement, sperm have been thought of as swimmers, i.e., their motility comes solely from sperm interaction with the surrounding fluid, and therefore, the surfaces have no direct role in the motility mechanism itself. Here, we examined the role of solid surfaces in the movement of sperm in a highly viscoelastic medium...

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is determined in the vast majority of cases by mutations in the CYP21A2 gene, which cause the deficiency of the 21 hydroxylase enzyme, which is involved in the synthesis of cortisol and aldosterone. Generally, CAH phenotype and disease severity can be predicted with the genotypes and is related to the residual activity of 21 hydroxylase enzyme. It is divided into classical CAH with salt wasting and simple virilizing forms and non-classical or late-onset CAH forms, respectively...
