This paper examines the development of the TECNO-ITINTEC museum, the first interactive science museum in Peru, which opened in 1979. The museum functioned under the Institute of Industrial Technology Research and Technical Standards (ITINTEC), a public institution established during the government of Velazco Alvarado. In 1975, Jorge Heraud became the president of ITINTEC's Board of Directors and proposed a science museum to inspire future generations of scientists. José Castro Mendívil joined as the exhibition's director and designer...

A new resistance locus acting against the potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida was mapped to chromosome VI in the diploid wild potato species Solanum spegazzinii CPC 7195. The potato cyst nematodes (PCN) Globodera pallida and Globodera rostochiensis are economically important potato pests in almost all regions where potato is grown. One important management strategy involves deployment through introgression breeding into modern cultivars of new sources of naturally occurring resistance from wild potato species...

Violence against women (VAW) is a significant public health and human rights issue, with an estimated 736 million women globally experiencing VAW. Consistent evidence demonstrates that substance use is associated with VAW and that participation in substance use treatment programs is associated with reduction in substance use-related violence. While evidence demonstrates the ability to address VAW through substance use treatment programs, less attention has been paid to geographic access to substance use programs...

Faraday rotation is a fundamental effect in the magneto-optical response of solids, liquids and gases. Materials with a large Verdet constant find applications in optical modulators, sensors and non-reciprocal devices, such as optical isolators. Here, we demonstrate that the plane of polarization of light exhibits a giant Faraday rotation of several degrees around the A exciton transition in hBN-encapsulated monolayers of WSe2 and MoSe2 under moderate magnetic fields. This results in the highest known Verdet constant of -1...

BACKGROUND: Limited availability and poor quality of data in medical records and trauma registries impede progress to achieve injury-related health equity across the lifespan. METHODS: We used a Nominal Group Technique (NGT) in-person workgroup and a national web-based Delphi process to identify common data elements (CDE) that should be collected. RESULTS: The 12 participants in the NGT workgroup and 23 participants in the national Delphi process identified 10 equity-related CDE and guiding lessons for research on collection of these data...

In the present research, we introduce and validate a single-item measure of identity leadership-the visual identity leadership scale (VILS). The VILS uses Venn diagrams of sets of overlapping circles to denote different degrees of alignment between a leader's characteristics and behaviours and a group's values and goals. Key advantages of the VILS over other existing multi-item scales are that it provides a holistic assessment of identity leadership, is short, and can be adapted to address novel research questions that are impractical to address with existing scales (e...

Simulation-based training (SBT) is increasingly acknowledged worldwide and has become a popular tool for ultrasound education. Ultrasound simulation involves the use of technology and software to create a virtual training setting. Simulation-based training allows healthcare professionals to learn, practice, and improve their ultrasound imaging skills in a safe learning-based environment. SBT can provide a realistic and focused learning experience that creates a deep and immersive understanding of the complexity of ultrasound, including enhancing knowledge and confidence in specific areas of interest...

Ferroptosis, a defensive strategy commonly employed by the host cells to restrict pathogenic infections, has been implicated in the development and therapeutic responses of various types of cancer. However, the role of ferroptosis in oncogenic Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)-induced cancers remains elusive. While a growing number of non-histone proteins have been identified as acetylation targets, the functions of these modifications have yet to be revealed. Here, we show KSHV reprogramming of host acetylation proteomics following cellular transformation of rat primary mesenchymal precursor...

Women and gender diverse people face unique challenges and have been under-represented in HIV research. Disulfide bridges in peptides and proteins play an essential role in maintaining their conformation, structural integrity, and consequently function. Despite ongoing efforts, it is still not possible to detect disulfide bonds and the connectivity of multiply bridged peptides directly through a simple and sufficiently validated protein sequencing or peptide mapping method. Partial or complete reduction and chemical cysteine modification are required as initial steps, followed by the application of a proper detection method...

BACKGROUND: The lack of noninvasive biomarkers for graft rejection remains a challenge for the accurate monitoring of vascularized composite allotransplants. Viral vector-mediated gene transfer is a promising method for preventing graft rejection. In this study, we aimed to establish the expression profile of microRNAs (miRNAs) in skin flap allotransplantation, with or without gene transfer, and determine the potential role of several miRNAs as biomarkers of acute rejection and immune tolerance...

Social workers assess and intervene to prevent harm among clients at risk of harm to self (HTS) and harm to others (HTO) with a firearm. This study sought to assess the impact of client race on social workers' approaches to reduce firearm access when they weighed voluntary (e.g., store out-of-home) and involuntary (e.g., extreme risk protection order) removal methods. We considered the role of social workers' self-identified race as a moderator of this relationship, comparing white (single race) and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) social workers...

PURPOSE: Traumatic injury in children, particularly adolescents, is both frequently and costly. In this study, we directly examined children's causal attributions for the recent traumas and asked them to propose prevention strategies of their own. We predict that children who attribute their injuries to their own actions, rather than an external force such as luck, will be more likely to develop strategies to avoid trauma in the future. METHODS: All children aged 10 -18 years who presented to a Level 1 pediatric trauma center at an urban children's hospital over a ten-month period were identified and presented with a series of structured interview questions...

The generation of peroxy radicals from hydroperoxides with subsequent selective peroxidation of 1,3-dicarbonyls in an undivided electrochemical cell under constant current conditions is reported. The method provides a variety of peroxy-containing barbituric acids and 4-hydroxy-2(5 H )-furanones with yields of up to 74%. Only the combination of anodic and cathodic processes provides efficient peroxidation by generating a set of alkoxy and peroxy radicals. NaNO3 acts as both an electrolyte and a redox mediator of radical reactions...
