INTRODUCTION: Patients with a prolonged preoperative symptom duration (PSD) in the setting of cervical disk herniation (DH) may suffer inferior outcomes after surgical intervention. Comparison between anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF) versus cervical disk arthroplasty (CDA) in this at-risk population has not yet been conducted. METHODS: Patients undergoing ACDF or CDA for DH with a PSD > 180 days were selected. Six-week (6W) and final follow-up (FF) patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) as well as magnitude of postoperative improvements (∆PROM) were compared between cohorts using multivariable linear regression...

Extended pleurectomy-decortication is a cytoreductive surgical treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma. Prolonged air-leak remains a major postoperative challenge lengthening hospital stay and increasing morbidity. In this video report we present a stepwise approach for visceral decortication, and introduce the concept of aerostasis by construction of an artificial neopleura. Our results suggest that improved aerostasis results in shortened air-leak duration.

Bile leakage is a common complication following liver surgeries, particularly in the cases of liver hydatid cyst operations. Currently, there is no adequate method which could be utilized to prevent this complication effectively. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of the biliary lipid test (BLT) in reducing biliary complications after hydatid cyst surgery. We retrospectively included patients who underwent open liver hydatid cyst surgery between January 2011 and January 2024. The study encompassed 122 patients, with 41 males and 81 females, ranging in age from 18 to 79 years...

BACKGROUND: This article intends to showcase a case of guided bone regeneration (GBR) utilizing a partially demineralized dentin plate processed from an extracted second molar for horizontal augmentation of the posterior ridge for implant placement. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 60-year-old patient presented with horizontal ridge deficiency at site #30 and an endodontically treated tooth #31 with recurrent decay. A treatment plan was proposed to extract tooth #31 and utilize a dentin graft from the tooth for ridge augmentation at site #30...

The consequences of partial nephrectomy (PN) compared to radical nephrectomy (RN) are less documented in patients with pre-existing chronic kidney disease (CKD) or with solitary kidney (SK). We assessed renal outcomes, and their determinants, after PN or RN in a retrospective cohort of patients with moderate-to-severe CKD (RN-CKD and PN-CKD) or SK (PN-SK). BACKGROUND: Four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables blood flow visualization. The absence of left atrial vortex flow (LAVF) has been implicated in the development of thrombus formation and arrhythmias. However, the clinical relevance of this phenomenon in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) remains unclear. This study aimed to unravel the relationship of LAVF with left atrial functions in patients with CHD.
