BACKGROUND: Response curves formed by analyte concentrations measured at sampled time points after consuming a mixed meal are increasingly being used to characterize responses to differing diets. Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, analyte concentrations for some of the time points may be missing. OBJECTIVE: To develop an algorithm to estimate the missing values at sampled time points in the analyte response curve to a mixed meal tolerance test (MMTT). DESIGN: We developed an algorithm to simulate the missing post-prandial concentration values for a MMTT...

There are many nutritional changes that come with aging, mostly as consequences of health regression. Malnutrition and overweight often start with inadequate food consumption, followed by alterations in biochemical indices and body composition. In our study, we aimed to analyze the feeding habits and energy and nutrient intake of a Hungarian elderly population, focusing on macronutrient, water, fruit, and vegetable consumption while searching for possible nutritional factors leading to NCD and many other chronic diseases in this population...

The detrimental impacts of postprandial hyperglycemia on health are a critical concern, and exercise is recognized a pivotal tool in enhancing glycemic control after a meal. However, current exercise recommendations for managing postprandial glucose levels remain fairly broad and require deeper clarification. This review examines the existing literature aiming to offer a comprehensive guide for exercise prescription to optimize postprandial glycemic management. Specifically, it considers various exercise parameters (i...

The natural behaviour of horses is to spend the majority of their time on feed intake The feeding of stabled horses is, however, often far from that, as their feed intake is limited to their nutritional requirements. In order to approach their natural foraging time, it is important to extend the feed intake time of stabled horses. The aim of this study was to estimate if the feed intake time differs when feeding haylage in a haynet, hayball, metal corner manger, or from the box floor. The experimental design consisted of a Latin square, occurred across four days with four adult Icelandic horses and four treatments...

The role of the mosquito excretory organs (Malpighian tubules, MT and hindgut, HG) in ammonia transport as well as expression and function of the Rhesus (Rh protein) ammonia transporters within these organs was examined in Aedes aegypti larvae and adult females. Immunohistological examination revealed that the Rh proteins are co-localized with V-type H+ -ATPase (VA) to the apical membranes of MT and HG epithelia of both larvae and adult females. Of the two Rh transporter genes present in A. aegypti, AeRh50-1 and AeRh50-2, we show using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and an RNA in-situ hybridization (ISH) assay that AeRh50-1 is the predominant Rh protein expressed in the excretory organs of larvae and adult females...

The emerging concept of chrononutrition suggests that modifying meal timing can favorably impact metabolic risk factors linked to diet-related chronic disease, including breast cancer. Here, we examined the potential of eating when glucose levels are near personalized fasting thresholds (low-glucose eating, LGE), a novel form of timed-eating, to reduce GV in women without diabetes, who are at risk for postmenopausal breast cancer...

In Europe, the main vector of tick-borne zoonoses is Ixodes ricinus, which has three life stages. During their development cycle, ticks take three separate blood meals from a wide variety of vertebrate hosts, during which they can acquire and transmit human pathogens such as Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis. In this study conducted in Northeastern France, we studied the importance of soil type, land use, forest stand type, and temporal dynamics on the abundance of ticks and their associated pathogens...

Introduction Pythons are a well-studied model of postprandial physiological plasticity. Consuming a meal evokes a suite of physiological changes in pythons including one of the largest documented increases in post-feeding metabolic rates relative to resting values. However, little is known about how this plasticity manifests in the brain. Previous work has shown that cell proliferation in the python brain increases six days following meal consumption. This study aimed to confirm these findings and build on them in the long term by tracking the survival and maturation of these newly created cells across a two-month period...
