BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Long-acting injectable antipsychotics have shown benefits over oral medications with reduced hospitalization rates and improved health-related quality of life. RBP-7000 (PERSERIS® ) is a monthly risperidone formulation (90 or 120 mg) for the treatment of schizophrenia administered by subcutaneous abdominal injection. The objective of this study was to assess a higher dose of 180 mg RBP-7000 and an alternate injection site. METHODS: Following stabilization on 6 mg/day (3 mg twice daily) oral risperidone, clinically stable schizophrenic participants received 3 monthly doses of 180 mg RBP-7000 in the abdomen followed by a fourth monthly dose of 180 mg RBP-7000 in the upper arm (each dose administered as two 90-mg injections)...

A 100 trillion bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea make up the human gut microbe. It has co-evolved with its human host and carries out essential tasks that improve general health. The relationship between gastrointestinal microbes and human health has been a growing field of interest and research in recent times. The gastrointestinal microbes are connected by complex networks and connections, and the host has given birth to the gut-microbe-brain axis, which shows the crucial effect that this circumstance could have on the health and diseases of the brain and spinal cord (or the central nervous system [CNS])...

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenic symptoms are known to segregate into reality distortion, negative and disorganization syndromes, but the correlates of these syndromes with regional brain structural change are not well established. Cognitive impairment is a further clinical feature of schizophrenia, whose brain structural correlates are the subject of conflicting findings. METHODS: 165 patients with schizophrenia were rated for symptoms using the PANSS, and cognitive impairment was indexed by estimated premorbid-current IQ discrepancy...

BACKGROUND: The concept of schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) emerged from observations of personality characteristics common in relatives of schizophrenic patients. While often studied in family designs, few studies and none with genetic measures, have examined SPD in epidemiological samples. METHODS: We studied individuals born in Sweden 1940-2000 with an ICD-10 diagnosis of SPD with no prior schizophrenia (SZ) diagnosis ( n = 2292). Demographic features, patterns of comorbidity, and Family Genetic Risk Scores (FGRS) were assessed from multiple Swedish registries...

Social cognition impairment is a significant neurocognitive disturbance observed during clinical course of schizophrenia. Deficits in this field observed in first- degree unaffected relatives have been suggested as a potential endophenotype. The main purpose of this study was to review the range of published articles on this topic, mainly from the last decade (2010-2021). A search in the online databases PubMed, Medline and Polish Medical Library using following keywords: schizophrenia, healthy sibling, social cognition, theory of mind, facial emotion recognition...

BACKGROUND: The potential link between environmental pollutants, including metals, and schizophrenia development remains debated. This study aimed to explore the association between plasma levels of three non-essential metals-barium (Ba), tungsten (W), and uranium (U)-and schizophrenia risk among Chinese individuals. METHOD: We recruited a total of 221 patients and 219 healthy controls. Plasma levels of three non-essential metals were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry...

This study aimed to investigate the associations between environmental temperature and schizophrenia admissions in Liuzhou, China. A Poisson generalized linear model combined with a distributed lag nonlinear model was used to analyze the effects of daily mean temperature on schizophrenia admissions from 2013 to 2020 in Liuzhou. Additionally, subgroup analyses were conducted to investigate possible modifications stratified by gender, marital status, and age. In this study, 10,420 schizophrenia admissions were included...

PURPOSE: Maternal cortisol levels in pregnancy may support the growth of or adversely affect fetal organs, including the brain. While moderate cortisol levels are essential for fetal development, excessive or prolonged elevations may have negative health consequences for both the mother and the offspring. Little is known about predictors of altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity during pregnancy. This study examined maternal hair cortisol concentration (HCC) in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy in relation to severe psychopathology...

BACKGROUND: Sensory attenuation (SA), the dampened perception of self-generated sensory information, is typically associated with reduced ERP signals, like for the N1 component of auditory ERPs. SA, together with efficient monitoring of intentions and actions, should facilitate the distinction between self-generated and externally-generated sensory events, optimizing the interaction with the world. According to many, SA is deficient in schizophrenia. The question arises whether altered SA reflects a sufficient mechanism to explain positive symptoms like auditory hallucinations...

In the context of the COVID-19, inflammation emerges as a prominent characteristic. C-reactive protein (CRP) serves as a commonly employed marker for the evaluation of inflammation. This study aimed to examine the correlation between CRP levels and antipsychotic drug concentrations in patients diagnosed with SCZ during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 186 SCZ patients were included in this study, which utilized electronic medical records. A woman in her 70s with schizophrenia experienced repeated episodes of limb tremors and hypoxemia. Even after admission, the same symptoms continued while in a supine position. However, her condition rapidly improved with bag valve mask ventilation. Although computed tomography suggested aspiration pneumonia, she had a strong cough reflex while performing bronchoscopy, and no residues were observed in the trachea. Following the bronchoscopy examination, the patient was prompted by a nurse and subsequently expelled a mass of watermelon from her oral cavity, which was identified as a watermelon eaten during breakfast on the day...
