Endometriosis represents a severe gynecological pathology, defined by implantation of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. This pathology affects almost 15% of women during reproductive age and has a wide range of consequences. In affected women, infertility has a 30% rate of prevalence and endometriosis implants increase the risk of ovarian cancer. Despite long periods of studies and investigations, the etiology and pathogenesis of this disease still remain not fully understood. Initially, endometriosis was related to retrograde menstruation, but new theories have been launched, suggesting that chronic inflammation can influence the development of endometriosis because inflammatory mediators have been identified elevated in patients with endometriosis, specifically in the peritoneal fluid...

Whole slide imaging is Food and Drug Administration-approved for primary diagnosis in the United States of America; however, relatively few pathology departments in the country have fully implemented an enterprise wide digital pathology system enabled for primary diagnosis. Digital pathology has significant potential to transform pathology practice with several published studies documenting some level of diagnostic equivalence between digital and conventional systems. However, whole slide imaging also has significant potential to disrupt pathology practice, due to the differences in efficiency of manipulating digital images vis-à-vis glass slides, and studies on the efficiency of actual digital pathology workload are lacking...

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of ectopic endometrial tissue outside of the uterine cavity, most commonly in the ovaries and peritoneum. It is a complex disease that is influenced by multiple factors. It is also a common gynecological disorder and affects approximately 10-15% of all women of reproductive age. Recent molecular and pathological studies indicate that endometriosis may serve as a precursor of ovarian cancer (endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer, EAOC), particularly endometrioid and clear cell ovarian cancers...

Since the last update of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging for corpus uteri cancer in 2009, a number of new insights into pathology, molecular genetics, and prognostic factors that justify a revision have been made. We recommend incorporation of histotype and grade along with depth of myometrial invasion to define stage I endometrial cancer, a change from 3-tier grading to binary grading, and inclusion of lymph node status (negative versus not removed) in the definition of stage I disease...

Background: The oncogenic potential of special AT-rich binding protein 1 (SATB1) has been reported in various types of cancer, but its function in cervical cancer remains not fully investigated. This study aimed to investigate the effect of SATB1 mRNA expression on tumor progression and outcomes in the cervical cancer patients. Methods: A total of 33 cervical cancer patients treated in our hospital from September 2012 to December 2015 were included. The mRNA expression level of STAB1 in cervical cancer tissue was determined by real-time PCR, and the patients were divided into dichotomous groups based on their SATB1 expression level...

BACKGROUND: Fertility-sparing surgery (FSS) has mainly been chosen for young women with ovarian-confined/well-differentiated epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). In general, FSS consists of at least conservation of contralateral ovary and the uterus with a staging surgery. However, information on the clinical outcome in women who underwent cystectomy as a fertility-preserving option is lacking. METHODS: After a central pathological review and search of the medical records from multiple institutions between 1987 and 2015, a total of eight early-stage EOC patients treated with cystectomy as FSS were retrospectively evaluated...

Hysterectomies are often linked to benign pathologies, but they are nevertheless the cause of anxiety and lead to significant physiological and psychological changes for these women. The uterus, as a symbol of femininity for women, has a unique meaning in relation to its reproductive function and its role in sexuality. Given this fact, does conversational hypnosis-used when a patient arrives at the hospital-have an impact on the pre- and postoperative anxiety of patients hospitalized for gynecological surgery in the form of a hysterectomy? To answer this question, a pilot study of comparative monocentric feasibility was performed with two parallel groups of 10 patients in 2014...

MRI plays important roles in endometrial and cervical cancer assessment, from detection to recurrent disease evaluation. Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common malignant tumor of the female genital tract in Western countries. EC patients are divided into risk categories based on histopathological tumor type, grade, and myometrial invasion depth. EC is surgically staged using the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) system. Since FIGO (2009) stage correlates with prognosis, preoperative staging is essential for tailored treatment...

OBJECTIVES: To assess the significance of pathologic ultrastaging (PU) of sentinel (SLN) and non-sentinel (nSLN) lymph nodes (LNs) and the influence on cancer staging in patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IA2-IB1 cervical cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with 54 patients divided into two equal-sized groups. In test group (n1), at least one SLN/patient was detected with blue dye. All excised LNs in this group were subjected to PU (4 μm slices/150 μm intervals) with hematoxylin-eosin staining and immunohistochemistry (AE1-AE3 antibodies)...

Background Severe forms of adenomyosis are a serious gynecological problem. In most cases, conservative treatment of this pathology is unsuccessful. Adenomyomectomy by Osada's approach seems to be the most promising solution. The present study evaluated the follow-up results of this type of surgery in patients with adenomyosis and infertility. Materials and methods The prospective study included 26 patients with severe forms of adenomyosis who underwent an adenomyomectomy using Osada's approach. In 18 patients (69%), infertility was the main indication for surgical treatment...

The abundant menorrhagia is the most prevalent cause of iron-deficient conditions in women. Though diagnostic of anemia is a simple task deficiency of knowledge in the area of hematology favors spreading and aggravation of anemia processes. The implementation of the register of patients with anemia syndrome into practical activities of physicians of all specialties is a modern direction of studying the given pathology. The proposed system of management of treatment diagnostic process permitted to optimize data collection related to disease, to ameliorate diagnostic search and to rationalize treatment of patients...

Mucinous cystadenomas are a common benign neoplasm of the ovaries that can grow much larger than other adnexal masses. We report a case of a 28-year-old female who presented with one month of increasing abdominal distension and upper abdominal pain; she was found to have a 30-centimeter (cm) adnexal mass. Pathology showed a benign mucinous cystadenoma with no evidence of malignancy. The authors discuss the initial evaluation and management of adnexal masses in general, as the variety of etiologies and severity can make this a difficult task...
