Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined as an increase in the bacterial content of the small intestine above normal values. The presence of SIBO is detected in 33.8% of patients with gastroenterological complaints who underwent a breath test, and is significantly associated with smoking, bloating, abdominal pain, and anemia. Proton pump inhibitor therapy is a significant risk factor for SIBO. The risk of SIBO increases with age and does not depend on gender or race. SIBO complicates the course of a number of diseases and may be of pathogenetic significance in the development of their symptoms...

BACKGROUND: Functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) are one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of FAPDs in children in southern Anhui Province, China and their association with academic stress. METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey, we randomly selected children aged 6-17 years from 11 public schools in southern Anhui Province. FAPDs were diagnosed according to the Rome IV criteria, and a custom-designed questionnaire was used to investigate the association between academic stress and FAPDs in children...

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common in children and adolescents. In recent years, interest in the role of diet in the treatment of FGIDs has increased. Currently, interest focuses on the low-FODMAP diet (LFD), the fructose- or lactose-restricted diet (FRD or LRD), the gluten-free diet (GFD), and the Mediterranean diet (MD). In this review, we focus on the role of these dietary patterns in the FGIDs most commonly diagnosed in clinical practice, namely irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional abdominal pain (FAP), functional dyspepsia (FD), and functional constipation (FC)...

BACKGROUND: Dyspepsia includes a spectrum of symptoms ranging from epigastric pain and early satiety to postprandial fullness. The worldwide prevalence of dyspepsia is 20-30%. It is slightly higher in the Western population and occurs more frequently among women. While the precise prevalence of dyspepsia in India is not available, different studies estimate that it affects 7.6-49% of the Indian population. Through our current study, we wanted to understand the demographics, clinical profile, patient presentation, and management in India...

BACKGROUND: Acute gastrointestinal infections can lead to post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS). Moreover, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is related to long-term gastrointestinal sequelae. In this study, the frequency, disease spectrum, and risk factors for post-infection functional gastrointestinal disease (PI-FGID) in COVID-19 patients and healthy controls were prospectively examined. METHODS: Validated Rome III and Rome IV questionnaires and limited objective assessment were used to assess the incidence of PI-FGID in 190 COVID-19 patients, and 160 healthy controls prospectively followed for 1, 3, and 6 months...

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are very common in subjects with eating disorders (EDs). This study aimed to (a) investigate the prevalence of gut-brain interaction disorders (DGBIs) in anorexia nervosa (AN) patients, according to ROME IV criteria; and (b) explore AN psychopathological assets and disgust that might impact GI symptoms. METHODS: Thirty-eight female patients consecutively diagnosed with untreated AN (age 19.32 ± 5.59) in an outpatient clinic devoted to EDs underwent Eating Disorder Inventory-3 (EDI-3), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Social Phobia Anxiety Scale (SPAS), Body Uneasiness Test (BUT), and Disgust Scale (DS) questionnaires...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Gastrointestinal (GI) dysmotility is categorized by muscle or nerve dysfunctions in any portion of the GI tract, which leads to abnormalities in GI motor and sensory function. Symptoms may vary depending on the organ affected and can be debilitating. Treatment usually involves diet and lifestyle changes. Pharmacotherapy is limited in effectiveness with various side effects. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES), a noninvasive, needleless technique that provides electrical stimulation using cutaneous non-needle electrodes, has become increasingly popular...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Some patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders exhibit pancreatic dysfunctions and pancreatic enzyme abnormalities. Thus, we aimed to clarify whether significant differences in clinical characteristics, prevalence of pancreatic enzyme abnormalities, duodenal inflammation, and protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) expression levels related to hypersensitivity exist between functional dyspepsia (FD) alone and FD-irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) overlap group. METHODS: Ninety-three patients based on the Rome IV criteria, FD alone (n = 44) and FD overlapped with IBS (n = 49) group were enrolled...

Blueberries beneficially modulate physiologic mechanisms relevant to the pathogenesis of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). Forty-three patients with FGID received freeze-dried blueberries (equivalent to 180 g fresh blueberries) or sugar and energy-matched placebo in a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study. After 6 weeks of treatment, the differences in Gastrointestinal Clinical Rating Scale (GSRS) scores and abdominal symptom relief were compared as primary outcome measures. The quality of life and life functioning ratings (OQ45...

OBJECTIVE: Evidence regarding the association between exercise habits and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) remains scarce in a young population. It is also unknown whether the existence of an exercise partner affects this issue. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between exercise habits that include an exercise partner and IBS in a young Japanese population. METHODS: This study enrolled 8923 Japanese university students and examined exercise frequency and intensity, and exercise partners using self-administered questionnaires...

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a frequent disorder of gut-brain interaction, affecting 5-7% of people globally, with significant impairment in quality of life. The management of FD is challenging due to the lack of specific therapeutic approaches. Although food seems to play a role in symptom production, its pathophysiologic role in patients with FD is not fully understood. Most FD patients report that their symptoms are triggered by food, especially in the post-prandial distress syndrome (PDS) group, although evidence to support the use of dietary interventions are limited...

A subgroup of patients with a disorder of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) report symptoms such as abdominal pain, gas-related symptoms, dyspeptic symptoms and loose stool or urgency after meal intake. Therefore, the effect of several dietary therapies including fibre-rich or restrictive diets have already been studied in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, functional abdominal bloating or distention, and functional dyspepsia. However, there is a paucity of studies in the literature on the mechanisms underlying food-related symptoms...

The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate the rate of post-COVID-19 FD and IBS. METHODS: MEDLINE, Scopus and Embase were searched through 17 December 2022. Studies reporting the incidence of FD and/or IBS in COVID-19 survivors and controls (without COVID-19), when available, according to the Rome criteria, were included. Estimated incidence with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was pooled...
