PURPOSE: Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is thought to cause lamina cribrosa (LC) blood vessel distortions and potentially collapse, adversely affecting LC hemodynamics, reducing oxygenation, and triggering, or contributing to, glaucomatous neuropathy. We assessed the robustness of LC perfusion and oxygenation to vessel collapses. METHODS: From histology, we reconstructed three-dimensional eye-specific LC vessel networks of two healthy monkey eyes. We used numerical simulations to estimate LC perfusion and from this the oxygenation...

Purpose: To investigate gel stent implantation with and without intraoperative sustained-release mitomycin C (MMC SR) in a rabbit model for gel stent implantation, and to examine aqueous humor outflow (AHO) postimplantation. Methods: Four groups of rabbits were included. Group 1 was untreated (control). Groups 2, 3, and 4 received the gel stent without MMC, with MMC solution (subconjunctival injection), and with MMC SR (subconjunctival injection), respectively. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and AHO were assessed via tonometry and indocyanine green-based angiography, respectively...

In this work, we investigated the influence of the bifurcation geometry of the iliac artery on the propagation properties of the pulse wave, and applied software to establish the straight bifurcation and curved bifurcation bi-directional fluid-solid coupling finite element analysis models based on the iliac artery, and compared and analyzed the influence of the bifurcation angle of the blood vessel on the propagation characteristics of the pulse wave. It was found that the bifurcation geometry had a significant effect on the pulse wave propagation in the iliac arteries, and the pressure and velocity pulse wave amplitudes predicted by these two models had a good agreement with that before the vessel bifurcation in a cardiac cycle...

2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) is an excellent antioxidant that is easily oxidized to 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroperoxyl-4-methyl-2,5-cyclohexadienone (BHTOOH). For the safety of BHT production and usage, it is meaningful to study the thermal stability and decomposition properties of BHT and BHTOOH. In this paper, the thermal decomposition properties of BHT and BHTOOH were compared by the mini closed pressure vessel test (MCPVT) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Their kinetics of thermal decomposition were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)...

PURPOSE: Atherosclerotic disease of the forearm arteries can impede the maturation of distal fistulas in diabetic patients. The goal of this study was to look at the maturity of diabetic hemodialysis patients' distal forearm (radiocephalic snuffbox or distal forearm) arteriovenous fistulas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with chronic renal failure who were candidates for distal forearm radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula implantation were evaluated in this cross-sectional study...

PURPOSE: This study explored the relationship among microvascular parameters as delineated by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and retinal perfusion. Here, we introduce a versatile framework to examine the interplay between the retinal vascular structure and function by generating virtual vasculatures from central retinal vessels to macular capillaries. Also, we have developed a hemodynamics model that evaluates the associations between vascular morphology and retinal perfusion...

BACKGROUND: Reliable assessment of coronary microvascular function is essential. Techniques to measure absolute coronary blood flow are promising but need validation. The objectives of this study were: first, to validate the potential of saline infusion to generate maximum hyperemia in vivo. Second, to validate absolute coronary blood flow measured with continuous coronary thermodilution at high (40-50 mL/min) infusion speeds and asses its safety. METHODS: Fourteen closed-chest sheep underwent absolute coronary blood flow measurements with increasing saline infusion speeds at different dosages under general anesthesia...

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD), a developmental abnormality of the heart and vessels, is encountered in the pediatric age group frequently. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) are indicators of subclinical cardiovascular disease and are used as surrogate measures of subclinical atherosclerosis. The present study aimed to compare CIMT and FMD between children with acyanotic congenital heart disease (ACHD) and healthy controls...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the liver caused by hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) influence pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH). Liver transplantation (LT) is the most common treatment for HHT-induced hepatic AVMs. However, LT is contraindicated for patients with severe PAH. There is controversy regarding the ideal therapeutic approach for HHT with PAH and hepatic AVMs. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 48-year-old female with PAH and HHT...

Schisandra chinensis , as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has clear pharmacological effects such as treating asthma, protecting nerves and blood vessels, and having anti-inflammatory properties. Although the Schisandra chinensis fruit contain multiple active components, the lignans have been widely studied as the primary pharmacologically active compound. The volatile chemical components of Schisandra chinensis include a large amount of terpenes, which have been proven to have broad pharmacological activities...

The circadian rhythms generated by the master biological clock located in the brain's hypothalamus influence central physiological processes. At the molecular level, a core set of clock genes interact to form transcription-translation feedback loops that provide the molecular basis of the circadian rhythm. In animal models of disease, a desynchronization of clock genes in peripheral tissues with the central master clock has been detected. Interestingly, patients with vascular dementia have sleep disorders and irregular sleep patterns...

Background : Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is an intensely investigated topic, but its mechanism of action accounts for one of the least understood ones in the area of wound healing. Apart from a misleading nomenclature, by far the most used diagnostic tool to investigate NPWT, the laser Doppler, also has its weaknesses regarding the detection of changes in blood flow and velocity. The aim of the present study is to explain laser Doppler readings within the context of NPWT influence. Methods : The cutaneous microcirculation beneath an NPWT system of 10 healthy volunteers was assessed using two different laser Dopplers (O2C/Rad-97® )...

(1) Background. Diabetes mellitus (DM), called the first non-infectious epidemic of the modern era, has long-term health consequences leading to a reduced quality of life, long-term disabilities, and high mortality. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a neurovascular complication of diabetes and accounts for about 80% cases of vision loss in the diabetic population. The adaptive optics (AO) technique allows for a non-invasive in vivo assessment of retinal cones. Changes in number or morphology of retinal cones may be one of the first indicators of DR...

To address the shortcomings of the recently proposed Fick's Law Algorithm, which is prone to local convergence and poor convergence efficiency, we propose a multi-strategy improved Fick's Law Algorithm (FLAS). The method combines multiple effective strategies, including differential mutation strategy, Gaussian local mutation strategy, interweaving-based comprehensive learning strategy, and seagull update strategy. First, the differential variation strategy is added in the search phase to increase the randomness and expand the search degree of space...

High-pressure water freeze fracturing (HPWFF) is a method for preparing water-containing samples such as hydrogels for scanning electron microscopy, in which a sample is placed in a divisible pressure vessel, filled with water, sealed, frozen with liquid nitrogen, then vacuum dried after the vessel is divided. The pressure (about 200 MPa) generated by the phase transition from water to ice is expected to inhibit ice crystal formation that causes large deformation of microstructure in the sample. To maximize the useable sample size, where SEM observation is not affected by ice crystal growth, preparation conditions including the size of pressure vessel were examined in this work...
