Satiety and appetite-stimulating hormones play a role in the regulation of food intake. Breastfed infants may have a different profile of serum appetite-regulating hormones than formula-fed infants. We propose to demonstrate that the serum concentration of appetite regulatory hormones differs according to the type of feeding and that there is a correlation between the serum concentrations of these hormones in mothers and in infants at 4 months of age. In a cross-sectional analysis, 167 mother-newborn dyads at the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara were enrolled: 74 full breastfeeding (FBF), 56 partial breastfeeding (PBF), and 37 receiving human milk substitutes (HMS)...

BACKGROUND: Significant body fat accumulation is an inevitable but potentially serious problem in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Whether excessive fat gain predicts long-term outcomes in these patients remains unknown. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study (n = 297), the associations of excessive fat accumulation with patient survival and PD failure rate were examined. Based on dialysis duration at the time of study enrollment, patients were divided into short- (<2years) and long-term (> 2 years) groups...

Mounting evidence shows that adiposity is closely related to elevated blood pressure (BP); however, the underlying mechanism of this relationship is not clearly understood. We aimed to assess the mediating effects of an inflammatory factor (high sensitivity C-reactive protein, hsCRP) and adipokines, as well as any sex differences, on the relationship between adiposity and BP among Chinese overweight or obese adults. A total of 1221 overweight or obese subjects aged 20-55 years who lived in Beijing for at least 1 year were recruited in 2014...

BACKGROUND: Infants with ductal-dependent pulmonary blood flow (PBF) often undergo a palliative procedure to provide a stable source of PBF prior to definitive palliation or repair. In the current era, a surgical shunt or ductal stent is used to provide PBF. We aimed to review the current literature comparing ductal stents to surgical shunts. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four small, single-center studies and two larger multicenter studies were identified comparing ductal stent to surgical shunt...

The use of prostaglandin-E1 immediately after birth and subsequent surgical creation of the modified Blalock-Taussig shunt (BTS) shunt have remarkably improved the prognosis and survival of children with congenital heart disease and ductal-dependent pulmonary blood flow (PBF). Despite the advancement in surgical techniques, bypass strategies, and postoperative management, significant morbidity and mortality after BTS still remain. Patent ductus arteriosus stenting has been shown to be as an acceptable alternative to BTS placement in select infants with ductal-dependent PBF...

Osteosarcoma is the most common malignancy of bone that affects young people. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgery have significantly improved the prognosis. However, the prognosis of non-responders to chemotherapy is still poor. To develop peptide-based immunotherapy for osteosarcoma, we previously identified CTL epitopes derived from papillomavirus binding factor (PBF) in the context of HLA-A2, HLA-A24 and HLA-B55. In the present study, we identified two novel CTL epitopes, QVT (QVTVWLLEQK) and LSA (LSALPPPLHK), in the context of HLA-A11 using a sequence of screenings based on the predicted affinity of peptides, in vitro folding ability of a peptide/HLA-A11 complex, reactivity of a peptide/HLA-A11 tetramer and IFN-γ production of T cells that was induced by mixed lymphocyte peptide culture under a limiting dilution condition...

Independent verification is a critical component of performance-based financing (PBF) in health care, in which facilities are offered incentives to increase the volume of specific services but the same incentives may lead them to over-report. We examine alternative strategies for targeted sampling of health clinics for independent verification. Specifically, we empirically compare several methods of random sampling and predictive modeling on data from a Zambian PBF pilot that contains reported and verified performance for quantity indicators of 140 clinics...
