High doses of cyclosporin A (CsA) can not be used in the long term treatment of kidney allograft recipients primarily due to severe side effects. In the present study, we investigated the potential application of Cordyceps sinensis (CS) in the long term treatment of renal transplant patients. The renal function and survival rates of grafts and patients did not show significantly different between the control group and the treatment group. However, the incidences of complications were significantly lower in the treatment group compared with that in control group with the exception of those showing acute rejection...

Dyslipidemia including hyper-LDL(low density lipoprotein) cholesterol which is very often refractory to dietary/medical treatments is known to be a risk factor of many arteriosclerotic lesions. An extracorporeal procedure of plasma adsorption, LDL adsorption, utilizing dextran sulphate as a ligand immobilized on cellulose gel beads has been clinically applied in a variety of dyslipidemic conditions as listed below. Its usefulness in secure reduction of the serum LDL level and consequent symptomatic improvements has been confirmed...

Heart and kideny allografts showed markedly prolonged survival in unrelated mongrel dogs following total lymphoid irradiation (TLI) and donor bone marrow without any other immunosuppression. In every animal the heart survived longer than the kidney; genetic disparity was ruled out, since the heart and kidney from the same donor were placed into one recipient. Placing the kidney allograft in the abdomen with the bone marrow given intraperitoneally doubled kidney survival over placement in the neck, but heart survival was equally prolonged in the abdomen or neck...

Athymic nu/nu mice are commonly employed for the heterotransplantation of solid human tumors. Leukemias, however, have consistently proved difficult to transplant and, to enhance their take, recipient nu/nu mice have been variously immunosuppressed. In this study, the natural reactivity against human malignant T lymphoblast (PF382) of splenectomized nu/nu mice (S-nu/nu), nu/nu mice splenectomized and treated with polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (SIC-nu/nu), and nu/nu mice splenectomized, irradiated and repeatedly injected with antiasialo GM1 antiserum (SIA-nu/nu) has been correlated with the in vivo growth of subcutaneous and intravenous PF382 cell challenges...

Many kidneys obtained from cadaver donors undergoing sudden cardiac arrest cannot be transplanted due to the long periods of warm ischemia from the moment of arrest to nephrectomy. A double-ballon-triple-lumen catheter for the rapid in situ preservation of cadaver kidneys has been designed. Used in combination with equipment routinely found in any hospital, it can cool human kidneys in situ to 10-15 C and maintain this temperature until nephrectomy can be performed. Kidenys preserved with this catheter have functioned after transplantation into suitable recipients...
