BACKGROUND: Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke incidence tends to be higher among minority racial and ethnic groups. The effect of race and ethnicity following an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) remains poorly understood. Thus, we aimed to explore the association between race and ethnicity and aSAH outcomes. METHODS: Single-center retrospective review of patients with aSAH from January 2009 to March 2023. Primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes included delayed cerebral ischemia, cerebral infarction, radiographic and symptomatic vasospasm, pulmonary complications, epileptic seizures, external ventricular drain placement, and modified Rankin Scale score at discharge and 3-month follow-up...

Daphniphyllum macropodum Miq., an evergreen arbor, is widely cultivated in southern China for its ornamental and medicinal value (Su et al. 2013). In October 2019, a severe leaf spot was observed on D. macropodum in Jinggangshan National Nature Reserve in Ji'an city, Jiangxi, China (114°06'23″E, 26°32'25″N). The plants were about 15 years old, and the disease incidence was estimated to be 15% (4/26 plants). The disease primarily appeared as small black spots on the leaves. At the late stage, the spots enlarged and coalesced into regular or irregular gray necrotic lesions with dark margins...

Spartina alterniflora Loisel, a perennial grass, has become an invasive species in China's coastal wetlands (Zhang et al. 2018). In July 2021, brown spot symptoms were observed on S. alterniflora in a coastal wetland (21°45'48″N, 108°44'00″E) in Beihai City, Guangxi Province, China. The disease affected approximately 50% of the plants in the surveyed area (0.2 ha) and was also observed in other regions of Beihai. It caused brown lesions with a gray or whitish center on the leaves and stems of S...

Previous work assessing the effect of additive noise on the postural control system has found a positive effect of additive white noise on postural dynamics. This study covers two separate experiments that were run sequentially to better understand how the structure of the additive noise signal affects postural dynamics, while also furthering our knowledge of how the intensity of auditory stimulation of noise may elicit this phenomenon. Across the two experiments, we introduced three auditory noise stimulations of varying structure (white, pink, and brown noise)...

The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations (UN) have acknowledged sickle cell disease as a significant global public health concern. Unfortunately, a cure for this condition is yet to be discovered, and existing allopathic treatments, while offering relief, come with serious side effects...

Thermogenesis in beige/brown adipose tissues can be leveraged to combat metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. The complement system plays pleiotropic roles in metabolic homeostasis and organismal energy balance with canonical effects on immune cells and non-canonical effects on non-immune cells. The adipsin/C3a/C3aR1 pathway stimulates insulin secretion and sustains pancreatic beta cell mass. However, its role in adipose thermogenesis has not been defined. Here, we show that male Adipsin/Cfd knockout mice exhibit increased energy expenditure and white adipose tissue (WAT) browning...

A study of the mechanism of and metabolic regulation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) production is important for improving the survival rate of young animals. In the present study, we observed that perirenal adipose tissue in goats undergoes a rapid BAT whitening after birth. However, the underlying regulatory mechanism remains unknown. To address this further, we investigated the role of miRNAs in regulating the whitening process of BAT in goats. First, we identified the dynamic expression profiles of miRNAs during the whitening of BAT in Dazu black goat using RNA-seq...

Patients of Asian and black ethnicity face disadvantage on the renal transplant waiting list in the UK, because of lack of human leucocyte antigen and blood group matched donors from an overwhelmingly white deceased donor pool. This study evaluates outcomes of renal allografts from Asian and black donors. The UK Transplant Registry was analysed for adult deceased donor kidney only transplants performed between 2001 and 2015. Asian and black ethnicity patients constituted 12.4% and 6.7% of all deceased donor recipients but only 1...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sport-specific training may improve postural control, while repetitive head acceleration events (RHAEs) may compromise it. Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying postural control may contextualize changes due to training and RHAE. The goal of this study was to determine whether postural sway during the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is related to white matter organization (WMO) in collegiate athletes. METHODS: Collegiate soccer (N = 33) and non-soccer athletes (N = 44) completed BESS and diffusion tensor imaging...

With increasing recognition that damage to white matter axons is a key pathologic substrate of concussion, we used a clinically relevant swine model of concussion to explore potential sex differences in the extent of axonal pathologies. At 24 h post-injury, female swine displayed a greater number of swollen axonal profiles and more widespread loss of axonal sodium channels than males...
