Gallbladder volvulus is a very rare complication of a congenital defect in gallbladder development also known as a "floating" gallbladder and often presents in the elderly. Proposed aetiologies include loss of abdominal fat and kyphoscoliosis. We present a patient with severe lumbar scoliosis centred on L2, producing a lumbar vertebral distortion of about 30 degrees concave to the right, resulting in right hemiabdomen volume loss. The mechanical interaction between the gallbladder fundus and compressed viscera transmits abnormal ambulatory forces from the distorted right pelvic brim into the abdomen predisposing to gallbladder torsion...

Malnutrition is frequent in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Apart from undernutrition and protein energy wasting (PEW), overnutrition prevalence is rising, resulting in fat mass accumulation. Sedentary behavior and unbalanced diet are the most important causal factors. Both underweight and obesity are linked to adverse outcomes regarding renal function, cardiometabolic risk and mortality rate. Muscle wasting is the cornerstone finding of PEW, preceding fat loss and may lead to fatigue, musculoskeletal decline and frailty...

BACKGROUND: Cryolipolysis - a popular noninvasive technique for body contouring - has less side effects compared to liposuction, however, its effectiveness in terms of reducing local adipose tissue is also lower. This study is, to our knowledge, the first prospective controlled, investigator-blinded split body trial to evaluate whether post cryolipolytic heating can increase the efficacy. METHODS: 25 subjects were treated with one session of cryolipolysis on the lower abdomen and a subsequent heating with a mud pack of a randomized side of the treated region (left or right)...

Repair of large midline ventral hernias still represents a challenge for general surgeons. As obesity is a key factor of this type of hernias, usually the patients are presented with abdominal wall laxity, excess skin and subcutaneous fat. Combined procedures has evolved over the last six decades to repair the hernias and to improve the shape of the abdomen, but was associated with high rate of wound complications. The components separation technique for ventral hernia repair was introduced in 1990 by Ramirez et al to avoid mesh repair was associated with a high rate of success...

INTRODUCTION: Progressive osseous heteroplasia (POH) is a rare, debilitating disorder characterized by heterotopic ossification in the skin and muscles, resulting in contractures of the joints and progressive loss of function. While 60-70% of the POH patients have paternally inherited, inactivating pathogenic variants in GNAS, the remaining 30-40% have no known etiology. FAM111B pathogenic variants, located on chromosome 11q12.1, cause POIKTMP (hereditary fibrosing poikiloderma with tendon contractures, myopathy, and pulmonary fibrosis), a very rare, autosomal-dominant disorder with high frequency of de novo missense pathogenic variants, which affects multiple tissues and organs, causing extensive fibrosis and muscle adiposis, though the exact mechanism is unknown...

The slope of a supracellular molecular gradient has long been thought to orient and coordinate planar cell polarity (PCP). Here we demonstrate and measure that gradient. Dachsous (Ds) is a conserved and elemental molecule of PCP; Ds forms intercellular bridges with another cadherin molecule, Fat (Ft), an interaction modulated by the Golgi protein Four-jointed (Fj). Using genetic mosaics and tagged Ds, we measure Ds in vivo in membranes of individual cells over a whole metamere of the Drosophila abdomen. We find as follows...

INTRODUCTION: Tumor collision is the cohesion in a time of 2 tumors in the same space or organ but of different cell lineage. PRESENTATION OF CASE: 72-year-old patient with a history of black stools, involuntary weight loss and moderate protein-calorie malnutrition, asthenia, and adynamia; with endoscopic studies with the finding of esophageal candidiasis that leads to taking a rapid test for HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) which is positive; CT (computerized axial tomography) of the abdomen is performed, showing thickening of the cecum and distal ileum, as well as striation of fat in the same area, findings related to a primary neoformative process, for which it is decided to carry out a right hemicolectomy laparoscopically with pathology that reports ulcerated moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma that invades up to the muscle layer, associated with lymphoid proliferation with immunohistochemical findings consistent with lymphoplasmablastic lymphoma, this is probably linked to his diagnosis of HIV, configuring the diagnosis of tumor collision; extension studies with no findings of metastatic neoplastic disease...

BACKGROUND: To reduce radiation exposure and improve diagnosis in low-dose computed tomography, several deep learning (DL)-based image denoising methods have been proposed to suppress noise and artifacts over the past few years. However, most of them seek an objective data distribution approximating the gold standard and neglect structural semantic preservation. Moreover, the numerical response in CT images presents substantial regional anatomical differences among tissues in terms of X-ray absorbency...

ACTINOMYCOSIS is a rare chronic granulomatous disease caused by anaerobic filamentous gram-positive bacteria, the most common of which is Actinomyces israelii . Actinomycetes are commensal inhabitants of the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, but they may become pathogenic through invasion of breached or necrotic tissue. Pelviabdominal ACTINOMYCOSIS is uncommon and can mimic a variety of disease processes, including abdominal mass mimicking malignancy, acute abdomen, asthenia, and weight loss. We describe a 38-year-old woman who presented with acute abdominal pain and tenderness, as well as constitutional manifestations and elevated inflammatory markers...

BACKGROUND: Aesthetic muscle stimulation (AMS) using high-intensity electromagnetic field (HIFEM) targets skeletal muscle neurons, causing muscle hypertrophy and loss of adipose tissue, thereby cultivating a sculpted physique. Many studies have evaluated AMS for noninvasive body contouring; however, the efficacy, safety, and long-term data remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To critically evaluate the current literature on the use of electromagnetic muscle stimulation for body contouring and provide a consensus on patient selection and long-term efficacy of AMS...

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome, also known as Wilkie's syndrome, is an uncommon disorder that involves a set of symptoms that primarily includes postprandial pain at times associated with intestinal obstruction. Although a rare disease in the general population, SMA syndrome has a high probability of occurrence in patients who are severely malnourished or have certain debilitating conditions leading to a loss of retroperitoneal fat. Here, we present the case of a 16-year-old male with a one-year history of postprandial abdominal pain associated with nausea, multiple episodes of vomiting, and abdominal distension...

PURPOSE: Obesity is associated with fat accumulation in ectopic sites such as the pancreas, the so-called pancreatic steatosis (PS). Bariatric surgery has been shown to be associated with reducing pancreatic fat. This study investigated the effect of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) on pancreatic volume and its fat content and glucose homeostasis. METHODS: The study enrolled 54 patients subjected to LSG. Metabolic variables and pancreatic exocrine function were assessed immediately before surgery and 12 months after...

In particular, Fleur-de-Lis abdominoplasty (FdL) is viewed critically by younger patients after massive weight loss due to the visible vertical scar...
