The aim of this study was to determine the effect of feeding licuri cake to lambs on the sensory characteristics, physicochemical characteristics and fatty acid (FA) profile of meat from lambs. Forty-four crossbred Santa Ines lambs (21.2 ± 2.70 kg body weight; 6 months old) were housed in individual pens and fed 4 experimental diets, containing 0, 8, 16 or 24% licuri cake (DM basis). The averages concentrations of ash (11.4), pH (5.82), lightness (38.1), cooking loss (26.8) or shear-force resistance (2.48) of lamb meat were not affected by the licuri cake diets...

The objective of this study was to examine effects of 4 levels of microalgae meal (All-G Rich, CCAP 4087/2; Alltech Inc., Nicholasville, KY) supplementation to the diet of finishing heifers on longissimus lumborum (LL) steak PUFA content, beef palatability, and color stability. Crossbred heifers ( = 288; 452 ± 23 kg initial BW) were allocated to pens (36 pens and 8 heifers/pen), stratified by initial pen BW (3,612 ± 177 kg), and randomly assigned within strata to 1 of 4 treatments: 0, 50, 100, and 150 g·heifer·d of microalgae meal...

BACKGROUND: The historical view of scoliosis as a primary rotation deformity led to debate about the pathomechanic role of paravertebral muscles; particularly multifidus, thought by some to be scoliogenic, counteracting, uncertain, or unimportant. Here, we address lateral lumbar curves (LLC) and suggest a pathomechanic role for quadrates lumborum, (QL) in the light of a new finding, namely of 12th rib bilateral length asymmetry associated with idiopathic and small non-scoliosis LLC. METHODS: Group 1: The postero-anterior spinal radiographs of 14 children (girls 9, boys 5) aged 9-18, median age 13 years, with right lumbar idiopathic scoliosis (IS) and right LLC less that 10°, were studied...

This study aimed to determine the impact of replacing soybean meal with peanut cake in the diets of crossbred Boer goats as determined by carcass characteristics and quality and by the fatty acid profile of meat. Forty vaccinated and dewormed crossbred Boer goats were used. Goats had an average age of 5 mo and an average BW of 15.6 ± 2.7 kg. Goats were fed Tifton-85 hay and a concentrate consisting of corn bran, soybean meal, and mineral premix. Peanut cake was substituted for soybean meal at levels of 0.0, 33...

This study evaluated the effects of standardized ileal digestible (SID) tryptophan and B6 on blood parameters, organ weights, carcass traits, and longissimus lumborum quality of barrows (70-100kg). Sixty-four crossbred barrows averaging 70.77±2.07kg were distributed in a 4×2 factorial with four SID tryptophan levels (0.130, 0.155, 0.180, and 0.205%) and two B6 levels (1 and 5mg/kg) in eight replicates of one animal each. The meat lightness degree answered linearly (P=0.015) to SID tryptophan levels and the shear force answered quadratically (P=0...

The effect of pasta inclusion in finishing pig diets was evaluated on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and ham quality. Pigs (144) were assigned to 4 diets with different pasta levels: 0 (control, corn-based diet), 30, 60, or 80%. Pigs fed pasta had greater (linear, P<0.01) feed intakes than controls. Pasta increased (quadratic, P<0.01) carcass weight and dressing percentage reaching the highest values at 30% inclusion level, and reduced (linear, P<0.01) the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum thickness...

OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to find out the impact of massage techniques, including myofascial and muscle energy techniques, on the symptoms of pain, muscular hypertonicity, and structural misalignment associated with isthmic lumbar spondylolisthesis. METHODS: A 30-year-old female was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis at age 12, has chronic mild to moderate back pain during prolonged walking/standing, hyperlordosis and anterior rotation of the pelvis. A 7-session treatment series of muscle energy techniques, and a type of myofascial bodywork known as active myofascial technique, was carried out, measuring rotational changes of the ilia, and the length of standing/walking time before low back pain onset...

The degree of steak doneness is an important factor in providing consumers with a satisfying eating experience. Endpoint temperature and cooking rate are the determinants of degree of doneness. Our objectives were to predict internal temperature profiles and cooking times for longissimus lumborum and biceps femoris steaks. Each biceps femoris and longissimus lumborum steak was cooked individually in a gas-fired, forced-air-convection oven at 163 °C until the center temperature of each steak reached 70 °C...

Post-mortem (PM) glycolytic rate in beef M. longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) was controlled by applying low-voltage electrical stimulation (ES) for 1 min at different stages along the slaughter line. The ES treatments were as follows: (1) No electrical stimulation (NES); (2) 75 V to one side of the carcass immediately after splitting; (3) 20-40 V during exsanguination; (4) 75 V either during or following exsanguination. The study utilized 40 bulls and 40 steers. Loin steaks were aged in vacuum pouches 2, 4, 8 and 16 days PM...

The effect of the β-adrenergic agonist L-644,969 on selected parameters of carcass and meat quality was examined in Friesian steers. Four groups of 18 steers were individually offered ad libitum a pelleted diet that contained 0, 0·25, 1·0, or 4·0 ppm L-644,969 for 12 weeks prior to slaughter. L-644,969 quadratically increased carcass weight (3·7, 9·3, and 8·5%, P < 0·001) and altered the distribution of lean meat such that a greater (0·3-5%; P < 0·01) proportion was in the more valuable cuts...

PURPOSE: To review and discuss the literature about the use of trunk muscle electromyography - including the use of surface or fine-wire electrodes, site of application and muscle selection - during gait analysis in healthy subjects. METHODS: The databases Pubmed, Web of Knowledge and Cochrane Library were searched. Articles were included when EMG activity of at least one trunk muscle was measured in healthy subjects during walking. RESULTS: In the 33 selected articles 491 healthy subjects walked with different velocities on a treadmill and/or overground...

This paper summarizes experience gained in the Central Military Sanatorium, Sochi, in the field of diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with myofascial pain syndrome affecting the quadratum lumborum muscle. Conditions facilitating development of triggering myofascial structures in these muscles are analysed and methods of their diagnosis are discussed. The proposed compression test allows active trigger structures to be identified in the quadratum lumborum muscle. Detailed description of the method of myofascial meridional reflexotherapy is presented (ischemic compression of condensed trigger structures or points with dry needling, taking account of the breathing act)...

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate which statistical model - linear, logarithmic, quadratic or exponential - best described the fatigue-related electromyographic (EMG) changes of back and hip muscles. Twenty healthy volunteers performed a modified Biering-Sorensen test. The EMG activity of the latissimus dorsi (LD), longissimus thoracis pars thoracis (LTT) and lumborum (LTL), iliocostalis lumborum pars thoracis (ILT) and lumborum (ILL), multifidus (MF), gluteus maximus (GM) and biceps femoris (BF) was measured bilaterally using surface electrodes...
