STUDY DESIGN: A case report describing our experience with anterior revision surgery for a dislocated ProDisc artificial disc at the L4-5 level, 2.5 years after the initial surgery. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the difficulties and risks associated with the use of a repeat anterior approach for the revision of a ProDisc that has failed at the L4-5 level. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: As the ProDisc has a central vertical keel, more intensive vascular mobilization is required to remove the dislocated implant during surgery than that required in patients who must undergo a revision of the SB-Charité disc...

Sexual activity is an important component of quality of life in patients suffering from chronic illnesses. To our knowledge, the effects of sexual activity on gas exchange in patients with respiratory failure have not been yet studied. To such an extent, we evaluated the oxygen saturation (SaO2), by a pulse oxymeter, during three different sexual performances in a 63-yr-old patient affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT). The sexual performances were divided in four periods: basal, sex, 10 min after sex and relax...

BACKGROUND: The Mindray 9006 is a newly developed pulse oximeter. The performance of noninvasive monitoring of arterial oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO(2)) and pulse rate (PR) with the Mindray 9006 was evaluated. MATERIAL/METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers participated in this study. The Mindray 9006 was evaluated according to guidelines including HS3-A, EP5-A, and EP9-A2 published by the CLSI, and ISO 9919. A blinded side-by-side comparison of the Mindray 9006 and the Masimo MS-3 oximeter was also performed...

AIM: When studying intestinal blood flow (IBF) using radiolabeled erythrocytes in the rabbit intestinal volvulus model, we also evaluated whether a pulse oxymeter (POX) could be used for the measurement of intestinal blood flow. METHODS: IBF was measured with radiolabeled erythrocytes and POX in the rabbit intestinal volvulus model. The study was performed on 3 groups: 1) baseline, 2) volvulus, 3) volvulus plus devolvulus. RESULTS: The POX and scintigraphic measurements were in correlation and showed that IBF stopped for 6 hours following volvulus...

Recommendations of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) become updated every five years with changing evidence resulting in revised recommendations for clinical practice. New data exist concerning the adequate oxygen concentration to be used in the delivery room, the management of imminent meconium aspiration, ventilation strategies and the role of body temperature during and after resuscitation of preterm and term newborn infants. Only in some cases new evidence has led to clear-cut recommendations for or against specific interventions...

However, the declining trend of the mortality and the morbidity seem to be leveling off now and the morbidity of the tuberculosis remain on the almost same level which are much higher than that of the developed countries. We have to make the progress in the field of the new diagnostic technique and the creation of the new drugs applying the most frontier science and the social system supporting the completion of the treatment for every patient...

We report an experience of anesthetic management of the ex-utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure performed in a fetus with congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS) due to laryngeal atresia at 30 weeks' gestation. Anesthesia of the mother was induced with rapid sequence, and maintained with 3.5% sevoflurane in 100% oxygen and fentanyl before delivery. Two minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) sevoflurane provided excellent uterine relaxation without maternal hypotension. After hysterotomy, a sterile pulse oxymeter was placed on the fetus hand for monitoring fetal SpO2 and pulse rate, and a Doppler ultrasound transducer was applied to monitor fetal heart rate...

The objective of the study is to evaluate changes in finger pulse wave amplitude (PWA), as measured by photoplethysmography, and heart rate (HR), related to obstructive respiratory events and associated arousals during sleep. We analyzed 1,431 respiratory events in NREM sleep from 12 patients according to (1) the type of event (apnea, hypopnea, upper airway resistance episode) and (2) the duration of the associated EEG arousal (>10, 3-10, <3 s). Obstructive respiratory events provoked a relative bradycardia and vasodilation followed by HR increase and vasoconstriction...

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the muscle deoxygenation measured by near infrared spectroscopy in endurance athletes who presented or not with exercise-induced hypoxemia (EIH) during a maximal incremental test in normoxic conditions. METHODS: Nineteen male endurance sportsmen performed an incremental test on a cycle ergometer to determine maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and the corresponding power output (P(max)). Arterial O2 saturation (SaO2) was measured noninvasively with a pulse oxymeter at the earlobe to detect EIH, which was defined as a drop in SaO2 > 4% between rest and the end of the exercise...

The study includes 62 women on labour at term with pathological decelerations from the fetal heart rate (FHR). SpO2 is monitored by means of fetal pulse oxymeter Nellcor N 400. Simultaneously FHR is monitored by means of cardiotocography. Fetal well-being is verified by pH u blood gas analysis from fetal scalp while the newborn well-being is proven by pH from umbilical artery and Apgar score at minute 1 and 5 after birth...

UNLABELLED: The setting up of the so-called "decrees on perinatal safety" on October 1998 has been associated with many difficulties which were apparently related to the lack of beds for intensive care units, special care units and neonatal medicine. This led to a national survey. We present an emergent surgical case of massive pulmonary embolism (MPE) that happened during orthopedic surgery. A 38-year-old man, who had bone fractures with his lumbar vertebra and ankle, underwent the internal fixation of the tibial bone with tourniquet under general anesthesia in our hospital. During this surgery, the pulse oxymeter showed a drop of arterial oxygen saturation suddenly. Immediately we installed a transesophageal echo (TEE) probe in the patient, and detected enlargement of the right ventricle and right atrial thrombus...

Leukotrienes, one of the mediators of inflammation in asthma, have a strong bronchoconstrictive effect. L-carnitine has been reported to influence respiratory functions. It has also been reported that L-carnitine inhibits leukotriene synthesis. To evaluate the effects of L-carnitine on oxygen saturation, urine leukotriene E4 levels and lung histopathology in a murine model of asthma, high IgE responder BALB/c mice (n = 24) were systemically sensitized to ovalbumin and chronically challenged with low particle mass concentrations of aerosolized ovalbumin, and then they were divided into 3 groups (study groups A, B, and C) each including eight mice...

A total of 20 patients were included, who were mechanically ventilated because of pulmonary or cardiovascular problems or trauma. Data were collected using a data form. Each patient was monitored for 5 minutes following suctioning with or without saline solution and findings of heart rate, SpO2, and blood gas measurements were recorded...
