PURPOSE: The Johns Hopkins Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) was implemented to overcome well-documented challenges in training and retaining physician-scientists by providing physician-scientist pathway training for residents and clinical fellows. The program's core tenets include monthly seminars, individualized feedback on project proposals, access to mentors, and institutional funding opportunities. This study evaluated the effectiveness and outcomes of the PTSP and provides a framework for replication...

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells are clinically proven to aid in cellular regeneration and accelerate wound healing. The healing effect can be measured by epidermal growth factor (EGF) levels. This study aims to determine the effect of a combination of PRP and SVF injections on EGF levels during the healing of full-thickness burns in Wistar rats. Forty-eight adult Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. Group A consisted of healthy rats. Groups B, C and D underwent modified full-thickness dermal burns...

Introduction Severe thermal burns are a catastrophic injury. Those surviving the initial insult are subject to life-long disability, prolonged hospital admission, nutritional issues and poor wound healing. Oxandrolone has been shown to reduce hospital duration and promote lean body mass. Despite not being licenced for use in burns trauma within the United Kingdom (UK), services across the country utilise Oxandrolone in the management of severe burns. We aim to analyse the use of Oxandrolone in major burns across burns services within the UK...

The standard care for burns is tangential surgical debridement and subsequent covering, but recently enzymatic debridement has appeared as an alternative. The objective of this study, using an individualised cost-per-patient information system, is to compare the cost per patient of these two alternatives and identify their main determining factors. A non-randomised, retrospective, observational study was carried out with 79 patients, 39 of whom were treated with surgical debridement. The average cost per patient for enzymatic debridement is lower, particularly due to a shorter length of stay of critical hospitalisation (13...

Here we present a case of a 52-year-old female patient who was admitted to the Clinic in December 2021 due to the presence of right side facial burns which were caused by a cigarette lighter under suspicious conditions. Her past medical history revealed she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20 and was hospitalized multiple times for the treatment of manic episodes. The last psychiatric hospitalization took place in October 2021. She had deep second-degree burns on the right side of the face, head and neck, with a total body surface area involvement of approximately 3%...

Burn injuries are the fourth most common type of trauma worldwide, after traffic injuries, falls and interpersonal violence. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the most critical proangiogenic factors. Failure in angiogenesis is often associated with chronic, non-healing wounds. This study aimed to compare the effect of sterile gauze with normal saline (NaCl) 0.9%, intermittent negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), continuous NPWT, and silver sulfadiazine dressing on increasing VEGF and angiogenesis in deep dermal burn injury...

We present our findings on interpatient transmission, epidemic control measures, and the outcomes of a series of ten critically ill burn patients who were either colonized or infected with carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB). None of the five infected patients achieved clinical cure, and all experienced relapses. Microbiological failure was observed in 40% of the infected patients. The isolated CRAB strains were found to carry blaOXA-23 and armA resistance genes. Despite the lack of clinical cure, all five infected patients survived and were discharged from the Burn Intensive Care Unit...

Aluminum/tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene/oleic acid (Al/JP-10/OA) nanofluid fuel is considered a potential fuel for aircraft powered by aviation turbine engines. However, an optimized formula for an Al/JP-10/OA system inducing a secondary atomization and micro-explosion effect and improving the burning performance needs to be developed. Extended reality (XR) devices, including virtual and augmented reality head-mounted displays (HMDs), are increasingly utilised within healthcare to provide clinical interventions and education. Currently, XR devices are utilised to assist in reducing pain and improving psychological outcomes for immunocompromised patients in intensive care units, palliative care environments and surgical theatres. However, there is a paucity of research on the risks of infection from such devices in healthcare settings. Identify existing literature providing insights into the infection control risk XR HMDs pose within healthcare facilities and the efficacy of current infection control and cleaning procedures...

Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of various acute disorders including ischemia/reperfusion injury, ultraviolet/radiation burn, as well as chronic disorders such as dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the precise mechanism involved remains to be clarified. We formerly identified a novel apoptosis-inducing humoral protein, in a hypoxia/reoxygenation-conditioned medium of cardiac myocytes, which proved to be 69th tyrosine-sulfated eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A)...

Providers who routinely treat this patient population face an ethical issue: balancing the obligation to provide beneficial treatment to a patient with the responsibility to protect that patient from suffering avoidable burn injuries.
