The osteoblastic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (bMSCs), critical to the osseointegration of titanium implants, is enhanced on titanium surfaces with biomimetic topography, and this is further enhanced when the surfaces are hydrophilic. This is a result of changing the surface free energy to change protein adsorption, improving cell attachment and differentiation, and improving bone-to-implant contact in patients. In this study, we examined different methods of plasma treatment, a well-accepted method of increasing hydrophilicity, and evaluated changes in surface properties as well as the response of bMSCs in vitro...

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) remains one of the major causes of high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Danggui Buxue Decoction (DBD)-an ancient Chinese herbal decoction-has been used to prevent coronary heart disease, which was called "chest palsy" in ancient clinics. However, the mechanism of DBD in the treatment of MI remains unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the effect and mechanism of DBD on MI by combining network pharmacology with in vivo experiments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, public databases were used to identify the key active chemicals and possible targets of DBD...

The androgen receptor (AR, Uniprot: P10275) signaling plays a key role in the progression of prostate cancer, various AR-related ligands have been reported to treat prostate cancer. However, some resistance mechanisms limited the treating effect of these ligands. Since DBD binding or the allosteric binding sites in LBD of AR may allow the circumvention of some drug resistance mechanisms, anti-resistance is expected especially through the NTD (N-terminal domain) targeting. What's more, studies have shown that compounds including EPI-001 and its derivatives which bind to the Tau-5 region on NTD could be promising molecules for AR-based therapeutics...

BACKGROUND: Liver donation after cardiac death (DCD) makes up a small percentage of the organs used in transplantation and poses a higher risk of graft loss compared to donation after brain death (DBD); this is a result of ischemia reperfusion for which the exact injury mechanisms are currently not fully understood. However, reperfusion injury has been shown to lead to necrosis as well as apoptosis through oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. In this work, we propose that use of the pro-survival, anti-apoptotic CEPT cocktail in post-ischemia normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) may improve recovery in rat livers subjected to extended durations of warm ischemia...

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is known as a harmful pollutant for the environment and human health, and its emission control is a high priority. Non-thermal plasma is an effective technology in this field. In this study, for the first time, the performance of direct and indirect H2 S plasma conversion methods was compared, optimized, and modeled with the CCD method. H2 S was diluted in zero air, and the study investigated the effect of discharge power, relative humidity, total flow rate, initial H2 S concentration, and their interactions...

Macrophages and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) play an essential role in different phases of wound healing. Cold atmospheric plasma has a wide range of applications in the treatment of chronic wounds. Hence, we aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of a custom-made plasma device in a full-thickness skin defect mouse model. In order to study the degradation process of dioxins in industrial flue gas, the decomposition of o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) in a DBD plasma catalytic reactor was investigated. The results showed that an NTP-catalyzed system, especially using the CuMnTiOx catalyst, had better o-DCB degradation performance compared to plasma alone. The combination of the CuMnTiOx catalyst with NTP can achieve a degradation efficiency of up to 97.2% for o-DCB; the selectivity of CO and CO2 and the carbon balance were 40%, 45%, and 85%, respectively...

Direct analysis of solid samples is always challenging for ionic sensors due to solidified elemental presence and matrix interference. In this work, a "three-phase transforming" technique was first established to make solid sampling elemental sensors and visual detection possible in the future. For Cd transforming from soil samples, a metal ceramic heater (MCH) electrothermal vaporizer (ETV) coupled with a dielectric barrier discharge quartz trap (DBD-QT) was first utilized to fulfill the solid sampling and preconcentration of Cd in soil; for on-site analysis, a colorimetric sensor based on the trithiocyanuric acid (TMT) functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was chosen as a chromogenic analysis model...

Here, we report the structures of the human AR DNA binding domain (DBD) bound to two natural AREs (C3 and MTV) in head-to-head dimer conformations, diffracting at 2.05Å and 2.25Å, respectively. Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is synthesized from ammonia (NH3 ) and methane (CH4 ) at ~ 1200°C over a Pt catalyst. Ammonia synthesis entails several complex, highly emitting processes. Plasma-assisted HCN synthesis directly from CH4 and nitrogen (N2 ) could be pivotal for on-demand HCN production. Here, we evaluate the potential of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) N2 /CH4 plasma for decentralized catalyst-free selective HCN production. We demonstrate a single-step conversion of methane and nitrogen to HCN with a 72% yield at <300°C...
