We present a 58-year-old woman with bipolardisorder and with a longstanding history of yellowbrown, hyperkeratotic papules in a seborrheicdistribution and nail changes. Her father andpaternal grandmother had similar eruptions and alsohad psychiatric disease. Histopathologic examinationshowed acantholysis and dyskeratosis, which wasconsistent with Darier-White disease. Darier-Whitedisease is a rare, hereditary disorder that is inheritedin an autosomal dominant manner and that usuallypresents in adolescence or early adulthood dueto mutations in the SERCA2 calcium pump...

OBJECTIVE: In both children and adults, psychiatric illness is associated with structural brain alterations, particularly in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). However, most studies compare gray matter volume (GMV) in healthy volunteers (HVs) to one psychiatric group. We compared GMV among youth with anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder (BD), disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and HVs. METHOD: 3-Tesla T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans were acquired in 184 youths (39 anxious, 20 BD, 52 DMDD, 20 ADHD, and 53 HV)...

Lithium has well-documented beneficial effects on the acute and prophylactic treatment of bipolardisorder. Its value as an add-on treatment of unipolar depression is also established. Additionally, amultitude of recent experimental data indicate that lithium has pronounced neuroprotective andneurotrophic action: given this neuroprotective profile, it is reasonable to expect this substanceto have beneficial effects on cognitive functioning. However, the hypothesis that lithium may act Lithium has well-documented beneficial effects on the acute and prophylactic treatment of bipolar disorder...

REVIEW
Luke Clark, Guy M Goodwin
Investigation of neuropsychological functioning in bipolar disorder provides a potential link from the prominent cognitive symptoms of the disorder to the underlying neural mechanisms. Continuous performance measures of sustained attention have yielded consistent findings in bipolar disorder patients. There are impairments that appear to be both state- and trait-related. Impaired target detection may represent one of the most sensitive markers of illness course in bipolardisorder. It is unrelated to residual mood symptomatology and medication status, and is present in patients with good functional recovery...
