BACKGROUND: The prevalence of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) has grown rapidly. As indications for the procedure expand, the proportion of patients who have satisfactory outcomes after rTSA has not been well defined. This systematic literature review explores overall patient satisfaction after rTSA and defines patient satisfaction based on indication for surgery. METHODS: A literature search was performed for studies describing patient satisfaction after rTSA in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines...

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff injury (RCI) is a common musculoskeletal ailment and a major cause of shoulder pain and limited functionality. The ensuing pain and restricted movement significantly impact overall quality of life. This study aims to systematically review the effects of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) on RCI. METHODS: This protocol follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols. A literature search, spanning inception to November 1, 2023, will include databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, MEDLINE, EMBASE, EBSCO, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) to identify ESWT studies for RCI treatment...

This study aimed to describe the shoulder anatomy, together with the anatomical relationships in adults and early stages of development. The shoulder muscles were studied from ultrasound, anatomical, and microscopic perspectives in a sample of 34 human shoulders. Thickness measurements were taken of the tendons and fasciae of the subscapularis, long head tendon of the biceps brachii, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and teres minor. Ultrasound and dissection techniques are strongly correlated. However, the measurements obtained from the dissection technique were superior to those obtained from the ultrasound in all cases, except for the thickness of the long head tendon of the biceps brachii, the teres minor tendon, and the fascia thickness of the infraspinatus...

While several proximal humerus fractures treated nonsurgically reach satisfactory outcomes, some become symptomatic malunions or nonunions with pain and dysfunction. When joint-preserving options such as malunion or nonunion repair are not optimal because of poor remaining bone stock or glenohumeral arthritis, shoulder arthroplasty is a good option. Because of the semiconstrained design of reverse shoulder arthroplasty, it is effective at improving function when there is notable bony deformity or a torn rotator cuff...

INTRODUCTION: Tendinopathy is a common pathology with numerous treatment options. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous tenotomy is a newer procedure to treat chronic tendinopathy. It reduces costs and risks compared to other treatments, such as open surgery and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. The goal of percutaneous tenotomy is to induce an acute inflammatory response that recruits clotting and growth factors, induces bleeding, and transforms scar tissue and diseased tendons into a healing state...

OBJECTIVE: There is increasing evidence that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an independent risk factor for the occur of tendinopathy. Therefore, this study is the first to explore the dynamic changes of the "gene profile" of supraspinatus tendon in rats at different time points after T2DM induction through transcriptomics, providing potential molecular markers for exploring the pathogenesis of diabetic tendinopathy. METHODS: A total of 40 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal (NG, n = 10) and T2DM groups (T2DM, n = 30) and subdivided into three groups according to the duration of diabetes: T2DM-4w, T2DM-8w, and T2DM-12w groups; the duration was calculated from the time point of T2DM rat model establishment...

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have demonstrated declining reimbursement and changing procedural utilization across multiple orthopedic subspecialties, yet a comprehensive examination of this has not been performed for rotator cuff repair, particularly at a geographic level. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in reimbursement, utilization, and patient populations for open and arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs (RCR) from 2013 to 2021 at a national and regional level. METHODS: The Medicare Physician and Other Practitioners database from years 2013 to 2021 were queried to extract all episodes of open chronic RCR, open acute RCR, and arthroscopic RCR...

BACKGROUND: Pain and pain perception are influenced by patients' thoughts. The short form Negative Pain Thoughts Questionnaire (NPTQ-SF) can be used to quantify unhelpful negative cognitive biases about pain, but the relationship between NPTQ-SF scores and orthopaedic surgery outcomes is not known. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to assess the relationship between negative pain thoughts, as measured by the NPTQ-SF, and patient-reported outcomes in patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, as well as to compare NPTQ-SF scores and outcomes between patients with and without a history of chronic pain and psychiatric history...

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic superior capsule reconstruction (SCR) was developed to restore superior shoulder stability, muscle balance, and function after irreparable posterior-superior rotator cuff tears. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether favorable clinical outcomes after SCR for irreparable rotator cuff tears would be obtained in patients aged more than 70 years. METHODS: A total of 173 consecutive shoulders in 162 patients who underwent arthroscopic SCR using autografts of fascia lata for irreparable rotator cuff tears were allocated to 3 groups according to patient age at the time of surgery: Group 1, <55 years old (11 shoulders); Group 2, 55-70 years old (85 shoulders); and Group 3, > 70 years old (77 shoulders)...

BACKGROUND: Biceps tendon pathology is a common source of pain in the shoulder. It is frequently seen in conjunction with symptomatic rotator cuff tears. Biceps tendon management during arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs can be achieved via tenodesis with various techniques or tenotomy. Tenodesis of the biceps generally results in less deformity and reduced exertion-related cramping. However, most techniques require the addition of some type of hardware to provide fixation for the biceps tendon, which adds cost, time, and complexity...

BACKGROUND: Prior research has demonstrated that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has shown promising results in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, lateral epicondylitis, and rotator cuff disease. However, there is a lack of standardization with PRP regarding its use for partial thickness rotator cuff tears (PTRCTs). The primary objective of this review is to assess the location of PRP injections in the shoulder, and how it corresponds to shoulder functional outcomes in PTRCTs. METHODS: Data sources included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted between January 2010 and September 2021 with the terms PRP, partial thickness rotator cuff tears, intra-articular injections, subacromial injections, and intratendinous injections...
