BACKGROUND: Inappropriate medication utilization among older adults is a pressing concern in the United States, owing to its high prevalence and the consequential detrimental impact it engenders. The adverse effects stemming from the inappropriate use of medication may be unequally borne by racial/ethnic minority populations, calling for greater efforts towards promoting equity in healthcare. The study objective was to assess the cost-effectiveness of Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services among Medicare beneficiaries and across racial/ethnic groups...

Network oscillation in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) plays a key role in attention, novelty detection and anxiety; however, its involvement in cognitive impairment caused by acute systemic inflammation is unclear. To investigate the acute effects of systemic inflammation on ACC network oscillation and cognitive function, we analyzed cytokine level and cognitive performance as well as network oscillation in the mouse ACC Cg1 region, within 4 hours after lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 30 μg/kg) administration...

To obtain information on the cultivation of tuberoses in Bangladesh's Jashore district, a study has been carried out to evaluate the economic and social standing of cultivators and examine the methods employed in production and farmers' attitudes towards field disease. The majority of surveyed farmers were men, aged between 30 and 40 years. Only 7.41% had a high level of education, and most had less than five years of experience in tuberose cultivation. On an annual basis, the total production cost amounted to Tk...

The increase in forcibly displaced populations seeking refuge in the United States has been met with fragmented, chaotic, and highly politicized responses to the detriment of migrants and receiving communities alike. Migrants encounter compounding systemic barriers to accessing basic resettlement resources. Expanding on pandemic-era innovations can strengthen social safety net infrastructure as a whole. Pediatricians are a potential early touchpoint for newly arrived families, providing an opportunity to support their specific health needs, refer to critical safety net services, and advocate for improved systems and policies...

A direct flow evacuated tube solar dryer (DF_ETSD), a novel drying system, was used for drying pre-treated okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). The performance of DF_ETSD was analysed by determining thermal profiling, dryer and collector efficiency hourly. The maximum 3-day average ambient temperature, collector outlet temperature and solar radiation were 35.6 °C, 66.4 °C and 976 W m-2 respectively. The collector efficiency increased as solar radiation increased over time due to a higher temperature difference between the collector outlet and ambient temperature...

The intricate nature of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) poses a significant challenge in predicting drug permeability, which is crucial for assessing central nervous system (CNS) drug efficacy and safety. This research utilizes an innovative approach, the classification read-across structure-activity relationship (c-RASAR) framework, that leverages machine learning (ML) to enhance the accuracy of BBB permeability predictions. The c-RASAR framework seamlessly integrates principles from both read-across and QSAR methodologies, underscoring the need to consider similarity-related aspects during the development of the c-RASAR model...

Accurate estimation of photosynthetic parameters is essential for understanding plant physiological limitations and responses to environmental factors from the leaf to the global scale. Gas exchange is a useful tool to measure responses of net CO2 assimilation (A) to internal CO2 concentration (Ci ), a necessary step in estimating photosynthetic parameters including the maximum rate of carboxylation (Vcmax ) and the electron transport rate (Jmax ). However, species and environmental conditions of low stomatal conductance (gsw ) reduce the signal-to-noise ratio of gas exchange, challenging estimations of Ci ...

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) are the main pests on corn (Poaceae: Gramineae). The performance of the larval wasp, Microplitis pallidipes Szépligeti (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), was reported on S. frugiperda and S. litura. In this study, we evaluated host selectivity, constructed an age-stage, 2-sex life table, and assessed the pest control potential of M. pallidipes against these 2 pests under laboratory conditions. Steels exhibit distinct properties that underscore their pivotal role in critical industries, such as maritime, aerospace, automotive, petrochemical, and biomedicine. In recent times, there has been an increasing trend towards manufacturing near- net -shape steel components through various additive manufacturing (AM) modalities, utilizing intricate 3D model data. Initially, powder bed fusion (PBF) technology garnered significant attention for the fabrication of steel components. Nonetheless, arc-directed energy deposition (arc-DED), also known as wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology, is progressively gaining prominence in the AM enterprise due to its high production rate, the ability to print large-scale components, and notably, reduced capital investment...

Optimizing photosynthesis is considered an important strategy for improving crop yields to ensure food security. To evaluate the potential of using photosynthesis-related parameters in crop breeding programs, we measured chlorophyll fluorescence along with growth-related and morphological traits of 23 barley inbreds across different developmental stages in field conditions. The photosynthesis-related parameters were highly variable, changing with light intensity and developmental progression of plants. Yet, the variations in photosystem II (PSII) quantum yield observed among the inbreds in the field largely reflected the variations in CO2 assimilation properties in controlled climate chamber conditions, confirming that the chlorophyll fluorescence-based technique can provide proxy parameters of photosynthesis to explore genetic variations under field conditions...

In least-developed countries (LDCs), electricity shortages are the primary barrier to economic and social growth. Some remote areas in LDC rely on diesel-based systems. However, renewable energy must be taken into account for generating electricity because of the uncertainty of diesel fuel prices and the emissions of carbon dioxide. Hybrid energy systems (HES) are becoming increasingly popular, which is unsurprising given the rapid advancement of renewable energy technologies, which have made them the preferred method to respond to the current unreliable electricity supply, reduce the impact of global warming that occurs from electricity production, and contribute to cost reduction...

Introduction: It may take decades to develop cardiovascular dysfunction following exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation from medical therapy or from nuclear accidents. Since astronauts may be exposed continually to a complex space radiation environment unlike that experienced on Earth, it is unresolved whether there is a risk to cardiovascular health during long-term space exploration missions. Previously, we have described that mice exposed to a single dose of simplified Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR5-ion ) develop cardiovascular dysfunction by 12 months post-radiation...
