Trichophyton rubrum is a human fungal pathogen that causes dermatophytosis, an infection that affects keratinized tissues. Integrated molecular signals coordinate mechanisms that control pathogenicity. Transcriptional regulation is a core regulation of relevant fungal processes. Previous RNA sequencing data revealed that the absence of the transcription factor StuA resulted in the differential expression of the MAPK-related high glycerol osmolarity gene (hog1) in T. rubrum. Here we validated the role of StuA in regulating the transcript levels of hog1...

Somatic evolution selects cancer cell phenotypes that maximize survival and proliferation in dynamic environments. Although cancer cells are molecularly heterogeneous, we hypothesized convergent adaptive strategies to common host selection forces can be inferred from patterns of epigenetic and genetic evolutionary selection in similar tumors. We systematically investigated gene mutations and expression changes in lung adenocarcinomas with no common driver genes (n = 313). Although 13,461 genes were mutated in at least one sample, only 376 non-synonymous mutations evidenced positive evolutionary selection with conservation of 224 genes, while 1736 and 2430 genes exhibited ≥ two-fold increased and ≥ 50% decreased expression, respectively...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prognostic value of 18 F-FDG PET-based intensity, volumetric features, and deep learning (DL) across different generations of PET scanners in patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated lung adenocarcinoma receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the pre-treatment 18 F-FDG PET of 217 patients with advanced-stage lung adenocarcinoma and actionable EGFR mutations who received TKI as first-line treatment...

Post-error slowing (PES), the tendency to slow down a behavioral response after a previous error, has typically been investigated during simple cognitive tasks using response time as a measure of PES magnitude. More recently, PES was investigated during a single reach-to-grasp task to determine where post-error adjustments are employed in a more ecological setting. Kinematic analyses in the previous study detected PES during pre-movement planning and within the grasping component of movement execution. In the current study (N = 22), we increased the cognitive demands of a reach-to-grasp task by adding a choice between target and distractor locations to further explore PES, and other post-error adjustments, under different task conditions...

Pre-eclampsia affects 3-4% of pregnancies and is associated with maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. High-risk pregnancies in Denmark are recommended prophylactic low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (LDA). If new screening algorithms are implemented, LDA will be recommended to around 10% of pregnant women. The use of LDA may slightly increase the risk of minor bleeding disturbances. Otherwise, there is a lot of promising data regarding the safety of LDA use during pregnancy, as argued in this review.

The usefulness of anatomical variation is determined by the knowledge of why nonmetric traits appear. Clear descriptions of the traits are a necessary task, due to the risk of confusing anatomical variants and evidence of trauma. Numerous interpretations of the appearance of calcaneal anatomical variants add to the need of an anatomical atlas of calcaneal nonmetric traits. We have analyzed a total of 886 calcanei; 559 belong to different modern and pre-Hispanic samples, and 327 bones were studied from a reference collection from Athens...

PURPOSE: Exome or genome sequencing (ES or GS) can identify genetic causes of otherwise unexplained congenital anomaly and perinatal death (PND) but is not routine practice. The evidence base for 'genomic autopsy' following termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly (TOPFA) and PND has been synthesised to determine the value of this investigation. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies meeting pre-specified inclusion criteria, and containing ≥10 cases of TOPFA or PND (with or without major congenital abnormality), where ES or GS was conducted...

Crystallization of alloys from a molten state is a fundamental process underpinning metallurgy. Here the direct imaging of an intermetallic precipitation reaction at equilibrium in a liquid-metal environment is demonstrated. It is shown that the outer layers of a solidified intermetallic are surprisingly unstable to the depths of several nanometers, fluctuating between a crystalline and a liquid state. This effect, referred to herein as crystal interface liquefaction, is observed at remarkably low temperatures and results in highly unstable crystal interfaces at temperatures exceeding 200 K below the bulk melting point of the solid...

BACKGROUND: Implant impingement and soft tissue tension are factors involved in dislocation after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Combined anteversion (CA) has been used as an indicator for implant placement. However, optimal implant placement remains a challenge. Moreover, the effect of changes in offset on dislocation is still unclear. In this study, we aimed to clarify the effects of postoperative CA and pre- and postoperative changes in offset on dislocation. Furthermore, being a hospital-based procedure, there is potential risk of complications arising from bacteria prevalent in such environments.
