Aim To determine the eff ect of hypoxic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on the interleukin (IL)-10 and interferon (IFN)-gamma in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Methods This study used a post-test control group design. Hypoxic MSCs were isolated and characterized according to their surface marker expression and diff erentiation capacities. PBMCs isolated from SLE patients were divided into three groups: control and two treatment groups. The treatment groups were treated by co-culturing MSCs to PBMCs with a ratio of 1:10 (T1) and 1:1 (T2) for 48 h incubation...

Huge amounts of noxious chemicals from coal and petrochemical refineries and pharmaceutical industries are released into water bodies. These chemicals are highly toxic and cause adverse effects on both aquatic and terrestrial life. The removal of hazardous contaminants from industrial effluents is expensive and environmentally driven. The majority of the technologies applied nowadays for the removal of phenols and other contaminants are based on physio-chemical processes such as solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and adsorption...

Cilembu sweet potato is one of Indonesia's leading agricultural commodities. The high carbohydrate content in sweet potatoes has the potential to change into sugar (glucose, sucrose, and fructose) during storage. The level of sweetness is one of the characteristics that determines the quality of sweet potatoes. The sweetness level of sweet potatoes is influenced by various factors, including genetics, environment, and their interactions. Apart from that, the role of invertase-producing bacteria in breaking down carbohydrates into sugars is very important...

Dengue virus infection (DVI) remains a significant health challenge, and diagnosis must still be considered. Non-structural protein 1 (NS1) is a potential marker of the dengue virus that can help diagnose DVI. The study aimed to assess the role of NS1 as a predictor of the severity of DVI. We utilized Dengue PCR-confirmed samples and employed semi-quantitative NS1Ag ELISA for NS1 examination, adhering to the World Health Organization South-East Asia Region (WHO-SEARO) 2011 criteria for DVI. We included DVI patients from Indonesia aged 1-65 years...

Membrane-based polyether sulfone (PES) is a potential candidate for hemodialysis because of its properties such as high mechanical strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. However, the nature of the hydrophobicity in the PES membrane inhibits their performance in transporting creatinine. In this study, polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were modified using a sulfonation process and modified with chitosan (CS) and lithium chloride (LiCl) to achieve a higher performance of the modified PES membrane for transporting creatinine compared to conventionally hemodialysis membrane...

In this study, ceramic materials of Mg(Ti0.99Sn0.01)O3 were synthesized and decorated on reduced graphene oxide, forming a nanocomposite of rGO/Mg(Ti0.99Sn0.01)O3 (rGO/MTS001). The successful synthesis results were confirmed by XRD, UV-Vis analysis, FT-IR, and SEM-EDS. The MTS001 has a flower-like morphology from SEM analysis, and the nanocomposites of rGO/MTS001 showed MTS001 particles decorated on rGO's surface. The electrochemical performance of rGO/MTS001 compared and MTS001 was investigated by determining the specific capacitance obtained in 1 M H2SO4 solution by cyclic voltammetry (CV), followed by galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) analysis using a three-electrode setup...

Wildlife that inhabit urban landscapes face the dual challenge of negotiating their positions in their group while navigating obstacles of anthropogenically modified landscapes. The dynamics of urban environments can result in novel injuries and mortalities for these animals. However, these negative impacts can be mitigated through planning, and onsite veterinary care like that provided by the Ubud Monkey Forest in Bali, Indonesia. We examined 275 recorded injuries and mortalities among six social groups of long-tailed macaques ( Macaca fascicularis ) brought to the veterinary clinic from 2015-2018...

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in behavioural changes in the way people consume food in Indonesia, because people tend to use online food delivery (OFD) services to order food after the pandemic. In line with this, application-based OFD service providers in Indonesia such as GoFood, GrabFood, ShopeeFood, and others are growing year after year, creating competition among OFD service providers. On the other hand, now that the COVID-19 pandemic condition has begun to improve, people may return to ordering food in the traditional manner, namely by visiting restaurants directly without using the OFD service application...

Chronic venous insufficiency is a medical condition that impacts the venous system in the lower limbs. The primary characteristic of this condition is the continual elevation of pressure within the leg veins due to walking, which leads to a range of associated issues, such as discomfort, swelling, alterations in the skin, and the development of ulcers. Sclerotherapy has emerged as a potentially effective treatment for chronic venous insufficiency, involving the injection of a sclerosing agent into the affected veins...

Diabetic foot ulcers affect quality of life and economically burden patients and the Indonesian healthcare system. The comparative cost-effectiveness of wound care specialists in private practices (e.g., wound clinics) and wound care nurses in national hospitals remains unknown. Thus, we used a decision tree to compare the cost and healing rates for patients after 12 weeks of wound care. Uncertainty was addressed using one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. Among 89 participants (42 in the national hospital and 47 in the private practice), no significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of sex, age, education level, smoking status, duration of diabetes, Wagner wound classification, glycated haemoglobin levels, neuropathy status, ankle-brachial index, baseline characteristics, quality of life, DMIST (depth, maceration, inflammation/infection, size, tissue type of the wound bed, type of wound edge, and tunneling/undermining) score, and wound location (P > 0...

The optimal circadian rhythm entrainment problem has been studied based on mathematical models, e.g. the Kronauer model. In this paper, we study the robustness of light-based circadian rhythm entrainment under model parameter perturbations as well as propose a feedback control law to improve the robustness of the entrainment strategy. Our study finds the model parameter whose perturbations affect the entrainment the most. We also find that feedback control reduces the sensivitity of the entrainment process to model parameter perturbations...
