Owing to the global health crisis of resistant pathogenic infections, researchers are emphasizing the importance of novel prevention and control strategies. Existing antimicrobial drugs predominantly target a few pathways, and their widespread use has pervasively increased drug resistance. Therefore, it is imperative to develop new antimicrobial drugs with novel targets and chemical structures. The de novo cysteine biosynthesis pathway, one of the microbial metabolic pathways, plays a crucial role in pathogenicity and drug resistance...

Cancers of the skin are the most commonly occurring cancers in humans. In fair-skinned populations, up to 95% of keratinocyte skin cancers and 70-95% of cutaneous melanomas are caused by ultraviolet radiation and are thus theoretically preventable. Currently, however, there is no comprehensive global advice on practical steps to be taken to reduce the toll of skin cancer. To address this gap, an expert working group comprising clinicians and researchers from Africa, America, Asia, Australia, and Europe, together with learned societies (European Association of Dermato-Oncology, Euromelanoma, Euroskin, European Union of Medical Specialists, and the Melanoma World Society) reviewed the extant evidence and issued the following evidence-based recommendations for photoprotection as a strategy to prevent skin cancer...

Intestinal damage and secondary bacterial translocation are caused by the inflammatory response induced by sepsis. Tongfu Lifei (TLF) decoction has a protective effect on sepsis-related gastrointestinal function injury. However, the relation between gut microbiota, immune barrier, and sepsis under the treatment of TLF have not been well clarified yet. Here, rats were subjected to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) to create a sepsis model. Subsequently, the TLF decoction was given to CLP rats by gavage, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), and antibiotic were used as positive control...

BACKGROUND: Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (NMV/r) is an oral antiviral drug used to treat mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients aged 12 years or older at high risk of progression to severe disease (eg, hospitalization and death). Despite being the preferred option for outpatient treatment in the majority of countries worldwide, NMV/r is currently underutilized in real-world clinical practice. AREAS OF UNCERTAINTY: As numerous real-world studies have described patient outcomes following treatment with NMV/r, this systematic literature review provides a comprehensive summary of evidence on NMV/r effectiveness against hospitalization and mortality further organized by clinically meaningful categories, such as acute versus longer-term follow-up, age, underlying health conditions, and vaccination status, to help inform health care decision making...

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has several negative health effects. Particulate matter (PM) is a pollutant that is often linked to health adversities. PM2.5 (PM with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5μm) exposure has been associated with negative cardiovascular (CV) outcomes. However, the impact of PM10 (PM with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤10μm) exposure is often overlooked due to its limited ability to pass the alveolar barrier. This study aims to assess the association between PM10 exposure and risk of myocardial infarction (MI) amongst adults (≥18 years of age) as this has been poorly studied...

Future colonists on Mars will need to produce fresh food locally to acquire key nutrients lost in food dehydration, the primary technique for sending food to space. In this study we aimed to test the viability and prospect of applying an intercropping system as a method for soil-based food production in Martian colonies. This novel approach to Martian agriculture adds valuable insight into how we can optimise resource use and enhance colony self-sustainability, since Martian colonies will operate under very limited space, energy, and Earth supplies...

Metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors play a key role in modulating most synapses in the brain. The mGlu7 receptors inhibit presynaptic neurotransmitter release and offer therapeutic possibilities for post-traumatic stress disorders or epilepsy. Screening campaigns provided mGlu7-specific allosteric modulators as the inhibitor XAP044 (Gee et al. J. Biol. Chem. 2014 ). In contrast to other mGlu receptor allosteric modulators, XAP044 does not bind in the transmembrane domain but to the extracellular domain of the mGlu7 receptor and not at the orthosteric site...

Leptospira spp. are bacteria responsible for leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease with considerable impacts on the economy, animal health, and public health. This disease has a global distribution and is particularly prevalent in Brazil. Both rural and urban environments are habitats for Leptospira spp., which are primarily transmitted through contact with the urine of infected animals. Consequently, domestic and wild species can harbor these prokaryotes and serve as infection sources for other hosts. In the context of wild animals, there is a dearth of molecular studies elucidating the roles of various animal and bacterial species in the epidemiology of leptospirosis...

Intra-articular fractures of the base of the first metacarpal (Bennet fractures) are prone to dislocation and require surgical reduction and fixation to prevent secondary degenerative joint disease and chronic dysfunction. Therefore, a prompt diagnosis is necessary, mostly achieved by conventional roentgenograms. We report the case of a 62-year-old man in whom a Bennet fracture was highly suspected on ultrasound (US) examination realized after a fall. Standard radiographs, obtained after US to confirm the diagnosis, were interpreted as normal...

BACKGROUND: Transposition flaps are commonly used for facial-defect repair after wide excision of skin cancers. However, such repair often causes excessive tension at the donor site that can result in distortion of the adjacent area. The hatchet flap, a rotation-advancement flap, can prevent distortion by redistributing the donor site tension evenly to the recipient site. This study aims to compare the esthetic outcomes of the hatchet flap and transposition flap in facial-defect reconstruction...

Inverted p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are easy to process but need improved interface characteristics with reduced energy loss to prevent efficiency drops when increasing the active photovoltaic area. Here, we report a series of poly ferrocenyl molecules that can modulate the perovskite surface enabling the construction of small- and large-area PSCs. We found that the perovskite-ferrocenyl interaction forms a hybrid complex with enhanced surface coordination strength and activated electronic states, leading to lower interfacial nonradiative recombination and charge transport resistance losses...

Children with congenital or acquired asplenia or hyposplenism have an increased risk for severe and even life-threatening infections mainly due to encapsulated bacteria. Current practice focuses on preventing severe infections with timely administration of vaccinations, antibacterial prophylaxis when indicated, and urgent evaluation and treatment of febrile events. As new vaccines are now available for both children and adults with asplenia/hyposplenism, we present an up-to-date recommendation on the prevention and management of acute infections in children with asplenia/hyposplenism...

Insecticides prevent or reduce insect crop damage, maintaining crop quality and quantity. Physiological traits, such as an insect's feeding behavior, influence the way insecticides are absorbed and processed in the body (toxicokinetics), which can be exploited to improve species selectivity. To fully understand the uptake of insecticides, it is essential to study their total uptake and toxicokinetics independent of their toxic effects on insects. We studied the toxicokinetics (TK) of insecticidally inactive test compounds incorporating agro-like structural motifs in larvae of the Egyptian cotton leafworm (Spodoptera littoralis, Lepidoptera), and their distribution across all biological matrices, using laboratory experiments and modeling...
