Repairing damaged tissue caused by bacterial infection poses a significant challenge. Traditional antibacterial hydrogels typically incorporate various components such as metal antimicrobials, inorganic antimicrobials, organic antimicrobials, and more. However, drawbacks such as the emergence of multi-drug resistance to antibiotics, the low antibacterial efficacy of natural agents, and the potential cytotoxicity associated with metal antibacterial nanoparticles in hydrogels hindered their broader clinical application...

Sedimentation is an important property of colloidal systems that should be considered when designing pharmaceutical formulations. In pharmaceutical applications, sedimentation is normally described using Stokes' law, which assumes laminar flow of fluid. In this work we studied swelling and hydration of spherical cross-linked amorphous starch microspheres in pure water, solutions of sodium chloride, and in pH-adjusted aqueous solutions. We demonstrated that Reynolds numbers obtained in these experiments correspond to the transition regime between the laminar flow and the turbulent flow and, hence, expressions based on the non-Stokes drag coefficient should be used for calculations of sedimentation velocity from known density or for assessment of density from observed sedimentation velocity...

Silk fibroin (SF) has garnered significant attention as a natural polymer for fabricating porous scaffolds in various engineering applications. However, the limited osteoinductive property of SF has hindered its efficacy in bone repair applications. In this study, we constructed an SF-based injectable porous microcarrier that is doped with laponite (LAP) which contains magnesium ions (Mg2+). The influence of freezing temperatures, concentrations of SF and LAP on the structural parameters of SF-LAP microcarriers was investigated...

Aquatic actuators based on the light-to-work conversion are of paramount significance for the development of cutting-edge fields including robots, micromachines, and intelligent systems. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of near-infrared light-driven hydrogel actuators through loading with lightweight polydopamine-modified hollow glass microspheres (PDA-HGMPs) into responsive poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels. These PDA-HGMPs can not only function as an excellent photothermal agent but also accelerate the swelling/desewlling of hydrogels due to their reconstruction for polymer gel skeleton, which speeds up the response rate of hydrogel actuators...

BACKGROUND: Drug resistance is a major obstacle in the treatment of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) with the combination of docetaxel (DTX) and doxorubicin (DOX). Excessive intracellular drug efflux is considered a key factor contributing to drug resistance. Therefore, developing drug-loaded microspheres to enhance cellular uptake and inhibit efflux of docetaxel and doxorubicin may be an effective strategy to overcome chemoresistance. METHODS: Alginate-Doxorubicin@carboxymethyl chitosan-Docetaxel (A-DOX@C-DTX) microspheres were prepared using an electrostatic spraying-assisted microfluidic device...

BACKGROUND: Bronchial arterial embolization (BAE) has been accepted as an effective treatment for bronchiectasis-related hemoptysis. However, rare clinical trials compare different sizes of specific embolic agents. This study aims to evaluate whether different Embosphere microsphere sizes change the outcome of BAE. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on consecutive patients with bronchiectatic hemoptysis who were scheduled to undergo BAE treatment during a period from January 2018 to December 2022...

High-energy-density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are confronted with crucial concerns of security and a short cycle lifespan caused by the uncontrollable formation of lithium (Li) dendrites. The poor thermal stability and heterogeneous Li deposition of conventional polyolefin separators often cause battery short circuiting and thermal runaway in LMBs. Herein, a novel dual-functional PE composite separator (PI-COOH/PE) coated by carboxyl polyimide (PI) microspheres is fabricated by an etching-acidification method...

Rotator cuff injuries result in more than 500,000 surgeries annually in the United States, many of which fail. These surgeries typically involve repair of the injured tendon and removal of the subacromial bursa, a synovial-like tissue that sits between the rotator cuff and the acromion. The subacromial bursa has been implicated in rotator cuff pathogenesis and healing. Using proteomic profiling of bursa samples from nine patients with rotator cuff injury, we show that the bursa responds to injury in the underlying tendon...

A microfluidic strategy of smart calcium alginate (CA) capsules is presented to immobilize Pseudomonas aeruginosa to treat oil slicks effectively. The capsule wall is embedded with poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) sub-microspheres as thermo-responsive switches. CA capsules, with a diameter of 3.26 mm and a thin wall thickness about 12.8 μm, have satisfying monodispersity, cavity structure, and dense surface structures. The capsules possess excellent encapsulation of bacteria, which are fixed in a restricted space and become more aggregated...

Artificial bone graft with osteoconductivity, angiogenesis, and immunomodulation is promising clinical therapeutics for the reluctant healing process of bone defects. Among various osteogenic substitutes, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is a quit competitive platform due to its easy deployment to the bone defects with irregular shape and biomimetic mechanical properties. However, the biologically inert essence of PMMA is reliant on the passive osseointegration and cannot provide sufficient biologic cues to induce fast bone repair...

The revelation of MoS2 as an efficient electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing material has ratcheted up people's attention to other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). To date, extensive studies have been conducted on the semiconducting VIB-Group TMDs while research into metallic VB-Group TMDs has been relatively rare. In this work, we successfully fabricated VB-Group VSe2 microspheres through a facile one-step hydrothermal method and used them as EMW absorbers.
