Selective RET inhibitors have shown promise in thyroid cancer (TC) and nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring RET fusions on next-generation sequencing (NGS), although rarity of the rearrangement has led to limited data for certain tumor types, such as carcinoma of unknown primary. We present a 65-year-old female with no history of malignancy, smoking or radiation exposure, who was found to have an anterior mediastinum malignancy of unknown primary, with metastases to supraclavicular lymph nodes. Core biopsy of the mediastinum revealed poorly differentiated carcinoma, while a biopsy of the thyroid revealed atypia of indeterminate significance (Bethesda III)...

Acute caffeine exposure had been shown to induce hyperglycemia however; the influence of thyroid hormones on the caffeine-induced hyperglycemia is yet to be established. The present study was therefore designed to investigate the effect of caffeine exposure on blood glucose and hepatic glycogen content in thyroidectomized rats. Sixty adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 10 groups as I-X (n=6).  Rats in groups I, III, V, VII and IX were given normal saline, caffeine, prazosin + caffeine, propranolol +caffeine, combined prazosin+ propranolol+caffeine injections respectively while rats in groups  II, IV, VI, VIII and X were thyroidectomized  and treated in similar manner as the normal rats respectively...

Gastric ulcer healing is impaired in both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid conditions.  Thyroid hormones regulate growth, energy metabolism and mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. Xenobiotics have been documented to negatively impact the thyroid gland at high doses but the redox and cellular interactions at low doses during wound healing process remains unclear. Potassium bromate has been documented to be toxic at high doses but there is dearth of information on its activities at a low dose in varied thyroid states which was evaluated in this study...

BACKGROUND: Thyroid testing strategies vary across laboratories. First-line combined thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and freeT4 (FT4) have historically been preferred by many laboratories as this detects individuals with undiagnosed central hypothyroidism who can be missed with a first-line TSH-only strategy. However, an up-to-date evaluation of the utility of this approach is lacking. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the clinical utility of first-line TSH and FT4 in the detection of central hypothyroidism in current day practice...

Thyroid ultrasonography examination is widely used in human and small animal medicine. However, it has rarely been applied in cattle. The aim of this study was to determine whether the measurements of the thyroid gland by ultrasound examination correlate to those taken during post-mortem examination. A sample of 22 cows and 23 calves was selected for thyroid gland evaluation. An ultrasound scan was performed ante-mortem, followed by euthanasia (for medical reasons) or slaughtered in the food chain and the dissection of the thyroid gland was therefore performed...

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: The klotho protein, a multifunctional protein, has been shown to be associated with a wide range of endocrine diseases and has been linked to thyroid tumourigenesis. However, the relationship between serum klotho levels and thyroid hormones remains poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the correlation between serum klotho levels and thyroid hormones. METHODS: Data was obtained from the NHANES cycles 2007-2008, 2009-2010, and 2011-2012...

This study aims to utilize a deep-learning (DL)-based automated segmentation model to segment orbital muscle and fat volumes on computed tomography (CT) images and provide quantitative volumetric data and a machine learning (ML)-based classifier to distinguish between TED and TED with CON. METHODS: Subjects with TED who underwent clinical evaluation and orbital CT imaging were included...

The authors characterized live births after cancer by race and ethnicity ("race/ethnicity") in a population-based sample of female AYAs. METHODS: This study used Texas Cancer Registry data linked to birth certificates (1995-2016) to estimate cumulative incidence of live birth, based on first live birth after cancer, and compared differences by race/ethnicity...

The median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) of school-aged children has been commonly used as a surrogate to assess iodine status of a population including pregnant women. However, pregnant women have higher iodine requirements than children due to increased production of thyroid hormones. The aim of the study was to evaluate the iodine status of pregnant women and children as well as their household salt iodine concentration (SIC) in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Eligible pregnant women and children from all six counties of Quzhou in 2021 were recruited into the study...

BACKGROUND: Vascular dysfunction constitutes the etiology of many diseases, such as myocardial infarction and hypertension, with the disruption of redox homeostasis playing a role in the imbalance of the vasomotor control mechanism. Our group previously has shown that thyroid hormones exert protective effects on the aortic tissue of infarcted rats by improving angiogenesis signaling. Existence of variability between the ultrasound operators when U-scoring is reported in the literature with some evidence found in the author's department. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is significant disagreement in the department and identify potential reasons for variability. Papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common thyroid malignancy and it frequently causes lymph node metastases. Approximately 50% of patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma have cervical lymph node metastases at the time of their initial presentation. Here we report a case of a young female who presented with a benign-appearing cystic neck mass, which was revealed to be metastases from occult papillary thyroid carcinoma. Completion thyroidectomy and neck dissection were done after the diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma...

This case report explores a rare presentation of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in a 59-year-old female with a history of Graves' disease (GD), highlighting the diagnostic challenges and the importance of considering thyroid dysfunctions in RLS. The patient, previously diagnosed and treated for GD, presented with acute nocturnal discomfort in her lower limbs, along with symptoms of fatigue, weight loss, and palpitations. Physical examinations and thyroid function tests indicated a recurrence of GD. Her RLS symptoms notably resolved following the treatment of GD with methimazole, pointing towards secondary RLS induced by GD...
