OBJECTIVE: The objective is to describe the HLA allelic frequency in PsA and correlate it with demographic and clinical variables. METHODS: Retrospective study of adult patients with a diagnosis of PsA (n=23) and healthy controls (n=46), all with a request for HLA-A, B, C, DR. Typing was performed using HLA-PCR/SSO LifeCodes and analyzed on the LUMINEX IS100/200 xMAP® system. (Ethics/Code HMC2022-014). RESULTS: One hundred thirty-eight alleles were included from 69 individuals, 43,5% women, aged 44,5±16,5 years in patients with PsA, with a mean age of disease onset of 33...

UNLABELLED: Lyme arthritis can present similarly to other causes of joint pain and swelling including septic arthritis and other acute and chronic arthropathies of childhood. Septic arthritis, although rare, constitutes an orthopedic emergency and requires early surgical intervention to reduce the risk of permanent joint damage. Currently, results of standard serologic tests to diagnose Lyme disease take days to weeks, which is unhelpful in acute clinical decision-making. Thus, some children with Lyme arthritis are treated empirically for septic arthritis undergoing unnecessary invasive procedures and hospital admission while on inappropriate antibiotic therapy...

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to target the unsatisfied need for early detection of the at-risk population and determine the subgroup of patients whose psoriasis (PsO) could transform into psoriatic arthritis (PsA). METHODS: A retrospective and longitudinal case-control study was conducted at Beijing Chao-yang Hospital. It included 75 patients who were clinically diagnosed with PsA in the case group and 345 who solely suffered from PsO without PsA in the control group...

INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) is an immune-mediated disease that causes non-scarring hair loss. While acute, solitary patches often spontaneously remit, developing secondary patches or failure of the disease to resolve within 6-12 months predicts a poor prognosis, with an increased risk of alopecia totalis or universalis. Chronic AA increases the risk of depression and suicidality and reduces quality of life. Treatment options for chronic or acute diffuse AA were previously limited to corticosteroids and traditional immunomodulators...

Spondyloarthropathy (SpA) is one of the most common causes of low back pain. It is caused by inflammatory arthritis in the spine, manifesting in various forms such as psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and sacroiliitis. A comprehensive systematic literature search was done to evaluate and compare MRI, CT, single-photon emission CT, PET, ultrasound (US) imaging, low-dose CT, and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) techniques in assessing SpAs. The search strategy was constructed by an analysis of key terms from relevant articles in MEDLINE ProQuest, Embase, and PubMed...

COVID-19 vaccination side effects have been increasingly reported, including new-onset autoimmune diseases such as chronic arthritis, thrombocytopenia, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), and more recently chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies (CIDP). Molecular mimicry and vaccine adjuvants appear to be important contributors to immune-mediated neuropathies. However, whether the link between the COVID-19 vaccine and these autoimmune disorders is coincidental or causal remains uncertain. We describe the ever-reported case of acute-onset CIDP following the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine in Tunisia...

INTRODUCTION: JAK-inhibitors (JAK-i) represent an effective treatment in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA). Oral glucocorticoids (OGC) are commonly used in combination with JAK-i to reach therapeutic target. We aimed to assess, in a real-life setting, the reduction of OGC dose during JAK-i treatment in active RA and PsA patients. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 103 patients (88 RA, 15 PsA) treated with JAK-i: 24% bio-naïve (b-naïve), 76% bDMARD-insufficient responders (bDMARD-IR) and 40% difficult to treat (D2T), defined as failure of ≥2 bDMARDs with different mechanism of action...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the utility of an innovative approach for early identification of patient profiles associated with long-term persistence of golimumab, a tumour necrosis factor inhibitor, in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) under real-world conditions...

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to environmental contaminants is a significant health concern because it has the potential to interfere with host metabolism, leading to adverse health effects in early childhood and later in life. Growing evidence suggests that genetic and environmental factors, as well as their interactions, play a significant role in the development of autoimmune diseases. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we hypothesized that prenatal exposure to environmental contaminants impacts cord serum metabolome and contributes to the development of autoimmune diseases...

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Little evidence exists comparing those with early versus late PJI. The purpose of the study was to determine comorbidity profile differences between patients developing early versus late PJI. METHODS: There were 72,659 patients undergoing primary TKA from 2009 to 2021 who were identified from a commercial claims and encounters database. Background and Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which joints are gradually destroyed. Early diagnosis and treatment before joint deformation or destruction is important. The detection of novel RA biomarkers in saliva may facilitate early detection of RA before disease onset. This study aimed to evaluate salivary concentration of α 1-antitrypsin (A1AT) in healthy patients and those with RA, and to assess the diagnostic value of salivary A1AT. Materials and Methods: In total, 80 participants were included: 20 healthy participants, and 60 patients with RA...

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength associated with aging; however, individuals with chronic diseases are at risk at the early stages. In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), sustained chronic inflammation influences muscle deterioration. It may expedite the development of sarcopenia, which has been linked to physical disability, cardiovascular events, disease activity of RA, and premature death. We aimed to compare the inflammatory profiles of patients with RA with and without sarcopenia...

In this review, we studied periosteal manifestations on US and assessed their diagnostic utility for osteomyelitis (OM) and arthritis. We included articles that studied ultrasonographic findings of periosteal changes in OM and arthropathies with aims to systematically review periosteal manifestations of each condition and summarize diagnostic values of each finding. A total of 13 articles were included in the systematic review...

Chronic stress enhances the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders and contributes to the aggravation and chronicity of pain. The development of stress-associated diseases, including pain, is affected by individual vulnerability or resilience to stress, although the mechanisms remain elusive. We used the repeated social defeat stress model promoting susceptible and resilient phenotypes in male and female mice and induced knee mono-arthritis to investigate the impact of stress vulnerability on pain and immune system regulation...

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is used as a traditional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, it can cause serious adverse reactions, including hyperpigmentation of the skin and bull's-eye macular lesions. Here, we present a case of HCQ-induced hyperpigmentation of the skin and bull's-eye macular lesions in a patient who received HCQ for RA. A 65-year-old female patient developed blurred vision and hyperpigmentation of multiple areas of skin over the body for one month after 3 years of HCQ treatment for RA...
