Adenoid basal carcinoma of the uterine cervix is uncommon neoplasia mostly occurring in postmenopausal women. It has excellent prognosis and a favorable clinical course. In addition, adenoid basal carcinoma is differentiated from adenoid cystic carcinoma by histologic and cellular morphologies, and immunohistochemistry. In this paper, we present the case of a 22 year old Korean female. She initially had a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) on Pap smear and a subsequent cervical loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) specimen revealing adenoid basal carcinoma...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare cervical malignancy, and its coexistence with other malignancies in the uterine cervix is extremely rare. Here, we present a case of coexistence of ACC and invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the uterine cervix, as well as a literature review. A 68-year-old Chinese woman with vaginal bleeding underwent a cervical cytology screening, cervical biopsy, and finally cervical conization. Subsequent pathological diagnoses of coexisting ACC and invasive SCC were rendered with a positive margin...

Adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) is a rare epithelial tumor of the cervix. It makes up approximately 1% of all cervical adenocarcinomas. Rare cases have been associated with common cervical epithelial tumors. We present a case of ABC associated with typical squamous cell carcinoma. A 54-year-old post-menopausal woman underwent D&C for vaginal bleeding. Histologically, the tumor was characterized by small cells with a narrow cytoplasm, making up islands and cords. Peripheral palissading in the cells surrounding the cystic areas that contained central cellular debris and keratin was noted...

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) of cervix behaves aggressively and it has a propensity for local infiltration, invasion in lymphatic vessels as well as perineural spaces, with subsequent haematogenous spread. In advanced disease (Stage III and IV), outcome is invariably poor. Moreover, these cases have a high tendency to recur locally and also to metastasize to distant sites. There are no standard treatment protocols because of rarity of disease. The guidelines for its management are established similarly as for staged squamous cell carcinoma of cervix...

OBJECTIVE: Adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) is an uncommon neoplasm of the uterine cervix. ABC can be accompanied by carcinoma in situ or invasive carcinoma. Most cases are discovered accidentally during radical hysterectomy. ABC is associated with a high risk of human papillomavirus infection (HPV), most often HPV 16 infection. CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of an 86-year-old Taiwanese married woman who suffered from bloody vaginal discharge and occasional lower abdominal pain and received cervical biopsy...

Adenoid basal hyperplasia is an underrecognized cervical lesion, resembling adenoid basal carcinoma, except the absence of deep invasion into the stroma. We report a series of 10 cases, all extending less than 1 mm from the basement membrane. Our results support the hypothesis that adenoid basal hyperplasia arises from reserve cells of the cervix. Lesions were found close to the squamocolumnar junction, in continuity with the nearby subcolumnar reserve cells. They shared the same morphology and immunoprofile using a panel of 4 antibodies (keratin 5/6, keratin 14, keratin 7 and p63) designed to differentiate reserve cells from mature squamous cells and endocervical columnar cells...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare variant of adenocarcinoma of the breast. It affects mainly minor and major salivary glands, but may also occur in many others locations such as: breast (<1% of all breast cancers), lung, trachea, cervix and Bartholin's gland. Its prognosis is excellent, contrary to the extra-mammary form. In fact, metastisation is rare (there are only seven clinical cases with metastisation described in literature and the lung is the most affected organ) and when it occurs, generally, there is no axillary node involvement...

Adenoid basal carcinoma is a rare tumor of the uterine cervix. Less than 100 cases have been documented thus far, and only a few cases have been reported among the Asian population. An important differential diagnosis is cervical adenoid cystic carcinoma because of their overlapping morphologic appearances but absolutely different clinical outcomes. The treatment of adenoid basal carcinoma should be conservative due to its generally benign behavior. CD117 (c-kit) have been recently found immunohistochemically positive for adenoid cystic carcinomas of other anatomic locations and may serve as a useful ancillary differential marker...

Two murine monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) 5G8 and 2H6 were generated by fusing spleen cells obtained from mice immunized with human fetal tissue extract (14 weeks, Nonidet P-40 membrane fraction) from the early first trimester, followed by a booster injection of a lung cancer cell line. The MAb 5G8 recognized antigens with a molecular weight of 90, 50, 20 kDa, was neuraminidase-resistant and showed cross-reactivity with both carcinoembryonic antigen and non-specific cross-reacting antigen. The MAb 2H6 reacted with a sialomucin whose molecular weight was more than 1000 kDa and was different from previously known tumor associated-marker antigens...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare malignancy, usually found in the salivary glands, although this unusual tumor can be found at other sites of the body. In particular, regarding adenoid cystic carcinoma of the cervix (ACCC) most frequently reports are given for postmenopausal women. In this respect, our work is one among very few in the literature that considers a cytologic picture of this uncommon cervix carcinoma. The case of 74 year old patient with postmenopausal bleeding is described. Both Pap smear and air dried smear of the uterine cervix were analyzed...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of uterine cervix is a rare tumor. Its origin is debatable. It has a high incidence in postmenopausal women but rarely can develop in patients under 40. An association with squamous cell carcinoma has been described. We report a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the endocervical canal with foci of squamous cell carcinoma in a 34-year-old suffering from menorrhagia associated with blood-stained vaginal discharge. Per vaginum and per speculum examination revealed a growth. Cervical biopsy showed bits of tissue, suggesting adenoid cystic carcinoma...

Adenoid basal carcinomas of the uterine cervix are uncommon neoplasms and generally run a favorable clinical course. Although it is well known that these tumors do not evoke the stromal reaction, we immunohistochemically examined a stromal reaction in a case of adenoid basal carcinoma. A 40-year-old woman was found to have a cervical polyp during a medical checkup and underwent polypectomy. Histological examination revealed the finding of adenoid basal carcinoma. Immunohistochemically, a smaller number of CD34-positive and CD31-negative stromal cells, namely fibroblasts, in the stroma of tumor center than in normal cervical stroma were observed...

Carcinomas of the cervix may be categorized on morphological grounds into four main groups: squamous carcinomas; adenocarcinomas; neuro-endocrine tumours; and others including adenosquamous carcinomas. Each group contains several morphological subvariants. Invasive squamous carcinomas and adenocarcinomas are preceded by cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia and cervical glandular intra-epithelial neoplasia, respectively. Each is graded into low and high grade. Micro-invasive carcinomas with stromal invasion less than 3mm in depth have a minimal chance of lymph node metastasis...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a rare and peculiar variant of adenocarcinoma. This tumor represents 3% of all primary cervical adenocarcinomas, and it is locally aggressive and capable of metastasis to other organs even in its early stage. We report a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma stage IIIb that was successfully treated with radiotherapy. The patient shows no evidence of recurrent tumor at 5 years after radiotherapy. Generally, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are chosen as the first treatment, because this cancer is seen most commonly in the elderly...

Adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) of the uterine cervix is a rare neoplasm with excellent prognosis. Differential diagnosis between ABC and an ABC-like lesion of adenosquamous cell carcinoma (ASC) of the cervix is important due to their contrasting prognosis. Reported herein are two cases of ABC that have been compared with seven ASC exhibiting ABC-like lesions from approximately 2600 resected uterine cervical malignancies diagnosed at Shikoku Cancer Center. The two ABC were incidentally found in the uterine cervix of 69-year-old and 59-year-old Japanese women due to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 and to squamous cell carcinoma, respectively...
