BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Carbon ion beams provide physical and biological advantages over photons. This study summarizes the experiences of carbon ion radiotherapy at the Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 1994 and August 2003, a total of 1601 patients with various types of malignant tumors were enrolled in phase I/II dose-escalation studies and clinical phase II studies...

Adenoid basal tumors are uncommon cervical lesions that some pathologists consider invasive carcinomas but others consider "epitheliomas" due to their low-grade histological appearance and rarely documented malignant behavior. We report the clinicopathologic features of 10 tumors comprised of both typical low-grade adenoid basal tumors (epitheliomas) intimately associated with invasive carcinomas having infiltrative growth, increased cytological atypia and mitotic activity, and various types of differentiation, including adenoid basal/squamous, pure squamous, adenoid cystic, and small cell neuroendocrine...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the uterine cervix is a rare primary neoplasm of the uterus that occurs in post-menopausal women; its radiological findings have not been described previously. We present the MR findings of a case of ACC. The mass exhibited homogeneous low-signal intensity on T1-weighted images. On T2-weighted images, the mass showed high-signal intensity with a lobulated contour and multiple septum-like internal architectures. It also contained spots of very high-signal intensity, which would represent the mucin in the glandular lumen...

BACKGROUND: The presence of human papilloma virus (HPV) 33 and possible myoepithelial differentiation in an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the cervix (ACC) Ib1 and the clinical outcome are reported. CASE: The case is an ACC, stage Ib1 harboring HPV 33, which was treated by radical hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy only. Human papilloma virus analysis of the tumor was done by means of nonisotopic in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction. Additionally immunoelectron microscopy was performed...

Adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix and its variants account for a much greater number of cases in routine practice of histopathology than they did several decades ago. The varied morphology of these tumours results in diverse problems in differential diagnosis. The overall area of glandular pathology of the cervix, of which invasive adenocarcinoma is only one subset, is further complicated by the fact that there are many benign glandular proliferations of the cervix that can potentially be misinterpreted as adenocarcinoma...

"Basaloid carcinoma" of the uterine cervix is a neglected and underrecognized entity that is not included in the current World Health Organization's classification of cervical neoplasms. Historically, this term has been used synonymously with adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC). In recent years, however, it has become evident that a broad spectrum of basaloid cervical neoplasms exist. At one end of the spectrum are low-grade lesions, such as ABC; at the opposite end of the spectrum there are aggressive tumors, including adenoid cystic carcinoma, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, and basaloid squamous carcinoma...

A case of carcinosarcoma associated with an adenoid basal carcinoma of the uterine cervix in an 84-year-old woman is described. The tumor formed a pelvic mass, and total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. The tumor was 17 cm in maximal dimension, arose in the posterior wall of the uterine cervix, and had a solid and cystic, focally myxoid sectioned surface. The tumor was composed of keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma and a mostly nonspecific sarcomatous component with focal chondrosarcomatous differentiation...

Adenoid basal carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a rare tumor with a favorable prognosis. A case of adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) of the uterine cervix was studied using light and electron microscopy. The patient was a 74-year-old Japanese woman who had undergone hysterectomy due to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 3. Incidentally, ABC was found in the resected uterus. The tumor cells made small nests and infiltrated the cervical portion of the uterus. In the nests, glands, cribriform patterns with glandlike structures, and squamous differentiation were seen...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the uterine cervix is extremely rare, frequently metastasizes to distant organs, and its prognosis is poorer than squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. The reasons for its poor prognosis are unclear. This case had both an ACC and a carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the uterine cervix, so the expressions of CD34, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were investigated in both tumors. Hysterectomy was performed on a 76-year old woman and the uterine cervical tissues immunohistochemically analyzed...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare neoplasm arising from the exocrine glands such as salivary glands, lachrymal glands, upper respiratory tract, breast or uterine cervix. Intracranial involvement is commonly from direct skull base involvement, although metastasis may rarely be seen. The predisposition of the adenoid cystic carcinoma for perineural and perivascular invasion is the prime reason for the locally invasive character of the tumour, often extending into the cranium via foramina at the skull base. The authors report a case of primary orbito-cranial extradural adenoid cystic carcinoma and cranial metastasis away from the primary site...

Carcinosarcomas (malignant Müllerian mixed tumors [MMMTs]) of the uterine cervix are rare neoplasms. This report describes the morphology, immunohistochemical profiles, and human papillomavirus (HPV) status of eight cervical MMMTs. Patients' ages ranged from 32 to 93 years (mean, 61 years). Seven cases showed in situ squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The invasive epithelial component (EC) was composed of combined adenoid basal carcinoma, basaloid SCC, and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in two cases. Keratinizing SCC, large cell nonkeratinizing SCC, undifferentiated carcinoma, and basaloid SCC predominated in the remaining tumors, one of which had admixed ACC...

A case of primary cervical carcinosarcoma is presented. The tumor occurred in a 76-year-old multiparous woman and it replaced the uterine cervix, extending to the vaginal wall and to the uterine corpus. Histologically, the carcinomatous component was exclusively an adenoid-cystic carcinoma and the sarcomatous component was an homologous stromal sarcoma. Immunohistochemically, both the carcinomatous and the sarcomatous elements were stained with smooth muscle actin. Only two other similar cases have been reported...

Since its recognition about 150 years ago, there has been much progress in the understanding of the pathogenesis, prevention, early detection and management of carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Important historical landmarks include the (1) recognition of pre-invasive and pre-clinical lesions, and the devise of various systems for reporting these lesions, (2) improvements in diagnostic techniques particularly colposcopy, (3) advent of therapeutic procedures (electrocoagulation, cryotherapy, laser therapy and loop electrosurgical excision), and (4) recognition of the aetiological relationship between the human papillomavirus and cervical neoplasia...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a rare tumor with unknown etiology. We report a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma occurring in a young woman, associated with multiple human papillomavirus (HPV)-related lesions including condyloma acuminata, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasm, cervical intraepithelial neoplasm and invasive basaloid squamous cell carcinoma. While adenoid cystic carcinoma has previously been found to coexist with squamous cell carcinoma or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, its association with such a variety of HPV-related lesions in our case has not been previously reported, and raises the speculation that HPV may also be the causative factor for adenoid cystic carcinoma...
