Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a procedure proven effective for treating morbid obesity and metabolic disorders, carries the risk of complications such as the formation of internal hernias. These hernias are often difficult to diagnose and can be potentially fatal because they can cause structural obstruction. Most internal hernias occur in the jejunojejunostomy mesentery space, followed by Petersen's space hernias, although herniation at other locations can also occur. Our case report presents an example of a rare internal hernia after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass...

Background: General Surgery course is a mandatory in medical schools and continuing surgery training is important even to experienced surgeons which they need to maintain and/or improve their surgical skills. Additionally, the models used for that practice are human cadavers, anesthetized porcine, or simulators and are not accessible for medicine schools or physicians in many countries. Therefore, we present a new technical procedure for preparation of frozen experimental animal's cadavers for medical surgical training...

Among the various problems associated with peritoneal dialysis, besides infectious causes, the risk of catheter malfunction plays a significant role in conditioning the continuation of the method, accounting for up to 15-18% of the total causes of dialysis drop-out. When non-invasive maneuvers, such as the use of laxatives to stimulate intestinal peristalsis or heparin and/or urokinase have no effect, videolaparoscopy is the only method that directly detects the precise causes of peritoneal catheter malfunction...

Premature regression of corpora lutea (PRCL) may adversely affect the outcome of hormonal ovarian superstimulation in small ruminants, and the total dose of exogenous gonadotropins used may be one of the causes of this condition. There were two major objectives of the present study: (1) to evaluate the effects of different superovulatory doses of porcine follicle-stimulating hormone (pFSH) on the biometry, blood perfusion (Doppler), and echotextural characteristics of luteal structures; and, (2) to determine the usefulness of biometric, vascular, and echotextural luteal variables, as well as measurements of circulating progesterone (P4 ) concentrations for early detection of PRCL in superovulated Santa Inês ewes...

BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted surgery research has grown dramatically in the past two decades and the advantages over traditional videolaparoscopy have been extensively debated. For hernias, the robotic system can increase intraoperative strategies, especially in complex hernias or incisional hernias. AIMS: This study aimed to compare the direct cost differences between robotic and laparoscopic hernia repair and determine each source of expenditure that may be related to the increased costs in a robotic program from the perspective of a Brazilian public institution...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) syndrome is an occlusive vascular disease, mainly caused by a severe weight loss that leads to a reduction of the fatty cushion around the SMA. Postprandial abdominal pain, early satiety, vomits, weight loss and malnutrition are the main symptoms of SMA syndrome. Therapy consists of nutritional support, while mini-invasive surgery is indicated when conservative measures are unsuccessful. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-years old caucasian woman reported the following symptoms: epigastric pain irradiated up to the right hypochondrium, late post-prandial vomiting and severe weight loss...

BACKGROUND: The approach to peritoneal catheter malfunction consists usually in a diagnostic and therapeutic sequence of laxative prescription, abdominal radiography, brushing of the catheter, guide-wire manipulation or fluoroscopy and in the end of a videolaparoscopy (VLS) rescue intervention. Ultrasound (US) is able to find out major causes of peritoneal catheter malfunction, however without a clearly defined diagnostic value. The aim of the study was to validate the diagnostic capability of US in catheter malfunction compared to the diagnostic reference of VLS...

Median arcuate ligament syndrome, which is characterized by postprandial pain, occurs as a result of the compression of the celiac trunk by the ligament. It is a rare pathology in pediatric patients. We present the case of a 14-year-old girl with recurrent abdominal pain. Ultrasound examination showed an increase in celiac trunk flow rate with flow reversal, while CT angiography demonstrated compression. It was surgically managed by dividing the arcuate ligament through videolaparoscopy. Symptoms disappeared right after surgery and did not reappear in the 24-month follow-up...

We present the case of a 73 years old woman with intestinal obstruction caused by a rare cause of biliary ileus, who arrived at our emergency department with lower abdominal quadrants pain (since about 2 months), recently associated with nausea, vomiting and abdominal distension. After clinical and laboratory evaluations, a computed tomography (CT) scan without intravenous contrast medium administration was urgently requested. CT had shown the presence of a large gallstone (diameter of about 6 cms) at the proximal ileum (stopped in this tract after the passage through a biliary-enteric fistula), and another gallstone (diameter of about 2 cms) in the gallbladder, associated with concentric thickening of gallbladder's walls, gas in the biliary tree, obliteration of peri-gallbladder's fat density and fluid in the peri-subhepatic area...
