The in vitro anticancer efficacy of a new series of quinazoline-based thiazole derivatives was explored. Three cancer cell lines, MCF-7, HepG2, and A548, as well as the normal Vero cell lines, were tested employing the synthesized quinazoline-based thiazole compounds (4a-j). All of these compounds showed a moderate to significant cytotoxic impact that would have been noticeable and, in some cases, much more pronounced than the widely used drug erlotinib. For the MCF-7, HepG2, and A549 cell lines, respectively, the IC50 values of compound 4i were 2...

UNLABELLED: Donor-derived transmission of infections is a rare complication of kidney transplant. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a common cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide, but donor-derived transmission to organ recipients has been reported in the literature only twice previously. The timeline for HAV incubation and clearance in transplant recipients is not well understood. METHODS: In 2018, 2 kidneys and a liver were procured from a deceased donor resident of Kentucky, one of many states that was experiencing an HAV outbreak associated with person-to-person transmission through close contact, primarily among people who reported drug use...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a simple, cost-effective and eco-friendly method for colorimetric detection of Hg2+ using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) synthesized by Trichosporon montevideense WIN. RESULTS: Hg2+ induced more visible blue shift of SPR band of the AuNPs than other heavy metal ions including Pb2+ , Cd2+ , Fe3+ , Mn2+ , Co2+ and Cu2+ . The λmax of SPR band exhibited a gradual blue shift from 548 to 537 nm with concentration of Hg2+ increasing (0-200 µM), and the absorbance ratio (A537 /A548 ) showed a positive linear correlation with Hg2+ concentration (R2  = 0...

BACKGROUND: Locally advanced colon cancer invading surrounding organs or structures is challenging to surgeons and oncologists. Multivisceral resections with tumor removal en bloc with invaded tissues provide the best chance for cure. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the management and outcomes after multivisceral resections in patients with clinically infiltrative, locally advanced primary colon cancer. DESIGN: This is a descriptive retrospective cohort study...

Recent advances in genetics have highlighted several regions and candidate genes associated with primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS), a systemic autoimmune epithelitis that combines exocrine gland dysfunctions, and focal lymphocytic infiltrations. In addition to genetic factors, it is now clear that epigenetic deregulations are present during SS and restricted to specific cell type subsets, such as lymphocytes and salivary gland epithelial cells. In this study, 72 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with 43 SS gene risk factors were selected from publicly available and peer reviewed literature for further in silico analysis...

Mitochondrial GTPase mitofusin-2 gene (Mfn2) is a novel gene characterised as a cell proliferation inhibitor. Mfn2 protein over-expression, mediated by an adenovirus, has a significant anti-tumour effect in A548 and HT-29 cells. However, there is no report on the effect of Mfn2 on urinary bladder carcinoma (UBCC). In this study, we sought to investigate the function of Mfn2 in UBCC. Mfn2 expression in 36 paired UBCC samples was investigated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analyses...
