The photosynthetic oxygen-evolving center (OEC) is a unique Mn4CaO5-cluster that catalyzes water splitting into electrons, protons, and dioxygen. Precisely structural and functional mimicking of the OEC is a long-standing challenge and pressingly needed for understanding the structure-function relationship and catalytic mechanism of O-O bond formation. Herein we report two simple and robust artificial Mn3Ce2O5-complexes that display a remarkable structural similarity to the OEC in regarding of the ten-atom core (five metal ions and five oxygen bridges) and the alkyl carboxylate peripheral ligands...

The current work suggests a new, ultrasensitive green functionalized sensor for the determination of anti-inflammatory medication diclofenac sodium (DCF). Alumina (Al2 O3 ) and cerium oxide (CeO2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted great interest for their use as outstanding and electroactive nanocomposite in potentiometric and sensory research due to their ultrafunctional potential. The formed nanoparticles have been confirmed using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The fennel extract-mediated Al2 O3 /CeO2 nanocomposite (Al2 O3 /CeO2 NCS) modified coated wire membrane sensor developed in this study was used to quantify DCF in bulk and commercial products...

The new compounds R2 TaO4- x N x with R = La, Ce, Nd, and Eu and 1.20 ≤ x ≤ 2.81 have been obtained by a solid-state reaction between metal nitrides and oxides or oxynitrides under N2 gas at temperatures between 1200 and 1700 °C. They are the first examples of rare earth transition metal oxynitrides with an n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popper structure and show different anion stoichiometries, crystal structures, and magnetic properties. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and electron diffraction indicate that the lanthanum, cerium, and neodymium compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pccn , with cell parameters a = 5...

Microbial exudates including siderophore, which changes chemical species of actinides and lanthanides. We have investigated effects of desferrioxamine B (DFOB; one of the siderophores) and siderophore-like organic molecules (SLOM) on the adsorption of lanthanides by microbial cells, aluminium oxide (Al2 O3 ), and manganese (Mn) oxides. When DFOB was present, the distribution coefficients of cerium (Ce) were measured to be lower than those of neighboring elements of lanthanum (La) and praseodymium (Pr) (Negative anomaly of Ce adsorption)...

A new zirconium and cerium-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) film (PVA/CMC-Zr-Ce) was synthesized thru a high-speed shear-assisted method and its adsorption for the removal of fluoride was studied, in which the NaCMC provided -COONa for ion exchange between Na and Zr-Ce, thus the loading amount of Zr-Ce on films was accordingly increased. The morphology and structure of PVA/CMC-Zr-Ce were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD)...

Herein, we investigate the potential of nanostructured high-entropy oxides (HEOs) for photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation, a process with significant implications for environmental sustainability and energy production. Several cerium-oxide-based rare-earth HEOs with fluorite structures were prepared for UV-light driven photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation toward valuable fuels and petrochemical precursors. Aging and aging-associated diseases (AAD), including neurodegenerative disease, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes, are inevitable process. With the gradual improvement of life style, life expectancy is gradually extended. However, the extended lifespan has not reduced the incidence of disease, and most elderly people are in ill-health state in their later years. Hence, understanding aging and AAD are significant for reducing the burden of the elderly. Inorganic metal nanoparticles (IMNPs) predominantly include gold, silver, iron, zinc, titanium, thallium, platinum, cerium, copper NPs, which has been widely used to prevent and treat aging and AAD due to their superior properties (essential metal ions for human body, easily synthesis and modification, magnetism)...

High-resolution electron microscopy is a well-suited tool for characterizing the nanoscale structure of materials. However, the interaction of the sample and the high-energy electrons of the beam can often have a detrimental impact on the sample structure. This effect can only be alleviated by decreasing the number of electrons to which the sample is exposed but will come at the cost of a decreased signal-to-noise ratio in the resulting image. Images with low signal to noise ratios are often challenging to interpret as parts of the sample with a low interaction with the electron beam are reproduced with very low contrast...

Dispersion of single atoms (SAs) in the host is important for optimizing catalytic activity. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to tune oxygen vacancies in CeO2-X directionally anchoring the single atom platinum (PtSA), which is uniformly dispersed on the rGO. The catalyst's performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can be enhanced by controlling different densities of CeO2-X in rGO. The PtSA performs best optimally densified and loaded on homogeneous and moderately densified CeO2-X/rGO (PtSA-M-CeO2-X/rGO)...
