We present a differential compressive imaging method for an optical fiber bundle (OFB), which provides a solution for an ultrathin bend-resistant endoscope with high resolution. This method uses an OFB and a diffuser to generate speckle illumination patterns. Differential operation is additionally applied to the speckle patterns to produce sensing matrices, by which the correlation between the matrices is greatly reduced from 0.875 to 0.0275, which ensures the high quality of image reconstruction. Pixilation artifacts from the fiber core arrangement are also effectively eliminated with this configuration...

AIM: The accurate reconstruction of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) from sparse projections is one of the most important areas for study. The compressed sensing theory has been widely employed in the sparse reconstruction of CBCT. However, the total variation (TV) approach solely uses information from the i-coordinate, j-coordinate, and k-coordinate gradients to reconstruct the CBCT image. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It is well recognized that the CBCT image can be reconstructed more accurately with more gradient information from different directions...

A primary cilium, made of nine microtubule doublets enclosed in a cilium membrane, is a mechanosensing organelle that bends under an external mechanical load and sends an intracellular signal through transmembrane proteins activated by cilium bending. The nine microtubule doublets are the main load-bearing structural component, while the transmembrane proteins on the cilium membrane are the main sensing component. No distinction was made between these two components in all existing models, where the stress calculated from the structural component (nine microtubule doublets) was used to explain the sensing location, which may be totally misleading...

Large-aperture, lightweight, and high-resolution imaging are hallmarks of major optical systems. To eliminate aberrations, traditional systems are often bulky and complex, whereas the small volume and light weight of diffractive lenses position them as potential substitutes. However, their inherent diffraction mechanism leads to severe dispersion, which limits their application in wide spectral bands. Addressing the dispersion issue in diffractive lenses, we propose a chromatic aberration correction algorithm based on compressed sensing...

EEG signals combined with deep learning play an important role in the study of human-computer interaction. However, the limited dataset makes it challenging to study EEG signals using deep learning methods. Inspired by the GAN network in image generation, this paper presents an improved generative adversarial network model L-C-WGAN-GP to generate artificial EEG data to augment training sets and improve the application of BCI in various fields. The generator consists of a long short-term memory (LSTM) network and the discriminator consists of a convolutional neural network (CNN) which uses the gradient penalty-based Wasserstein distance as the loss function in model training...

Rapid and continuous advancements in remote sensing technology have resulted in finer resolutions and higher acquisition rates of hyperspectral images (HSIs). These developments have triggered a need for new processing techniques brought about by the confined power and constrained hardware resources aboard satellites. This article proposes two novel lossless and near-lossless compression methods, employing our recent seed generation and quadrature-based square rooting algorithms, respectively. The main advantage of the former method lies in its acceptable complexity utilizing simple arithmetic operations, making it suitable for real-time onboard compression...

The use of metamaterials is a good alternative when looking for structures that can withstand compression forces without increasing their weight. In this sense, using nature as a reference can be an appropriate option to design this type of material. Therefore, in this work, a comparative study of a selection of eight representative models of a wide variety of existing solutions, both bioinspired and proposed by various researchers, is presented. These models have been manufactured using stereolithography (SLA) printing, which allows complex geometries to be obtained in a simple way that would be more complicated to achieve by other procedures...

Carbon nanotube (CNT)-based nanocomposites have found applications in making sensors for various types of physiological sensing. However, the sensors' fabrication process is usually complex, multistep, and requires longtime mixing and hazardous solvents that can be harmful to the environment. Here, we report a flexible dry silver (Ag)/CNT/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposite-based sensor made by a solvent-free, low-temperature, time-effective, and simple approach for electrophysiological recording. By mechanical compression and thermal treatment of Ag/CNT, a connected conductive network of the fillers was formed, after which the PDMS was added as a polymer matrix...

Magnetic resonance imaging produces detailed anatomical and physiological images of the human body that can be used in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of diseases. However, MRI suffers its comparatively longer acquisition time than other imaging methods and is thus vulnerable to motion artifacts, which ultimately lead to likely failed or even wrong diagnosis. Phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging ( 31 P-MRSI) provides valuable non-invasive in vivo information on tissue metabolism but is burdened by poor sensitivity and prolonged scan duration. Ultra-short echo time (UTE) acquisitions minimize signal loss when probing signals with relatively short spin-spin relaxation time (T 2 ), while also preventing first-order dephasing. Here, a three-dimensional (3D) UTE sequence with a rosette k-space trajectory is applied to 31 P-MRSI at 3T. Conventional chemical shift imaging (CSI) employs highly regular Cartesian k-space sampling, susceptible to substantial artifacts when accelerated via undersampling...

Lake Petea's evolution was mainly controlled by major climate-driven hydrological changes also seen in regional records.
