BACKGROUND: Syphilis co-infection among pregnant people living with HIV (PLH) may worsen pregnancy outcomes. We evaluated the impact of syphilis co-infection on pregnancies in south Brazil. METHODS: Data was extracted from hospital records between 1/1/2008 -12/31/2018. Preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW < 2500 g), and a composite adverse infant outcome [AIO: HIV vertical transmission, loss to follow-up before HIV diagnosis (LTFU), stillbirth, congenital syphilis] were evaluated among pregnancies without HIV and syphilis (PWOH+S), PLH mono-infection, syphilis mono-infection (PLS), and PLH with syphilis (PLH + S)...

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF1) has a crucial function in the regulation of oxygen levels in mammalian cells, especially under hypoxic conditions. Its importance in cardiovascular diseases, particularly in cardiac ischemia, is because of its ability to alleviate cardiac dysfunction. The oxygen-responsive subunit, HIF1α, plays a crucial role in this process, as it has been shown to have cardioprotective effects in myocardial infarction through regulating the expression of genes affecting cellular survival, angiogenesis, and metabolism...

Hypertension affects more than one billion people worldwide. Here we identify 113 novel loci, reporting a total of 2,103 independent genetic signals (P < 5 × 10-8 ) from the largest single-stage blood pressure (BP) genome-wide association study to date (n = 1,028,980 European individuals). These associations explain more than 60% of single nucleotide polymorphism-based BP heritability. The widespread and increasing use of nanomaterials has resulted in a higher likelihood of exposure by inhalation for nanotechnology workers. However, tracking the internal dose of nanoparticles deposited at the airways level, is still challenging. To assess the suitability of particle number concentration determination as biomarker of internal dose, we carried out a cross sectional investigation involving 80 workers handling nanomaterials. External exposure was characterized by portable counters of particles DISCminiTM (Testo, DE), allowing to categorize 51 workers as exposed and 29 as non-exposed (NE) to nanoparticles...

INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) is an immune-mediated disease that causes non-scarring hair loss. While acute, solitary patches often spontaneously remit, developing secondary patches or failure of the disease to resolve within 6-12 months predicts a poor prognosis, with an increased risk of alopecia totalis or universalis. Chronic AA increases the risk of depression and suicidality and reduces quality of life. Treatment options for chronic or acute diffuse AA were previously limited to corticosteroids and traditional immunomodulators...

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor, mainly affecting children, young adults, and the elderly. It is an aggressive cancer with a poor prognosis, exhibiting low survival rates even with standard treatment. Recently, circular RNA molecules capable of influencing gene expression through various functions, with their main role being acting as microRNA sponges and reducing their intracellular expression, have been identified. Recent studies have linked circular RNAs to osteosarcoma development and progression...

Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B*15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B*15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the US (191 asymptomatic vs...

Materials from green resources boast a low carbon footprint, forming the foundation of the circular economy approach in materials science. Thus, in this study, waste poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was subjected to depolymerization using propylene glycol (PG), and subsequent polycondensation with bio-based maleic anhydride (MA) produced unsaturated polyester resin (b-UPR). Bio-derived acryloyl-modified Kraft lignin (Kf L-A) served as a vinyl reactive filler in the b-UPR matrix to create b-UPR/Kf L-A composites...

Laser sintering, known as powder bed fusion-laser beam (PBF-LB), offers promising potential for the fabrication of patient-specific drugs. The aim of this study was to provide an insight into the PBF-LB process with regard to the process parameters, in particular the laser hatching distance, and its influence on the properties of zolpidem tartrate (ZT) tablets. PHARMACOAT® 603 was used as the polymer, while Candurin® Gold Sheen and AEROSIL® 200 were added to facilitate 3D printing. The particle size distribution of the powder blend showed that the layer height should be set to 100 µm, while the laser hatching distance was varied in five different steps (50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 µm), keeping the temperature and laser scanning speed constant...

Although cancer and malaria are not etiologically nor pathophysiologically connected, due to their similarities successful repurposing of antimalarial drugs for cancer and vice-versa is known and used in clinical settings and drug research and discovery. With the growing resistance of cancer cells and Plasmodium to the known drugs, there is an urgent need to discover new chemotypes and enrich anticancer and antimalarial drug portfolios. In this paper, we present the design and synthesis of harmiprims, hybrids composed of harmine, an alkaloid of the β-carboline type bearing anticancer and antiplasmodial activities, and primaquine, 8-aminoquinoline antimalarial drug with low antiproliferative activity, covalently bound via triazole or urea...

Reduced production or function of Tregs has been implicated in several human autoimmune diseases. The cytokine interleukin 2 plays a central role in promoting Treg differentiation, survival, and function in vivo and may therefore have therapeutic benefits for autoimmune diseases. mRNA-6231 is an investigational, lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated, mRNA-based therapy that encodes a modified human interleukin 2 mutein fused to human serum albumin (HSA-IL2m)...
