Multimorbidity, the presence of 2 or more chronic conditions in a person at the same time, is an increasing public health concern, which affects individuals through reduced health related quality of life, and society through increased need for healthcare services. Yet the structure of chronic conditions in individuals with multimorbidity, viewed as a population, is largely unmapped. We use algorithmic diagnoses and the K-means algorithm to cluster the entire 2015 Danish multimorbidity population into 5 clusters...

AIM: To explore criteria evaluating the effectiveness of psychiatric home care-mobile team practices, that have been developed widely in the last decades. DESIGN: Systematic review of the literature. METHODS: We included 24 studies published between January 2010 and October 2023. DATA SOURCES: CINAHL, APA PsycInfo, Embase, Scopus and PubMed. RESULTS: The evaluation criteria differed according to the studies: impact on hospital stay, symptomatic clinical impact, repercussions on functioning, quality of life, analysis of profitability, safety, therapeutic alliance and finally, cooperation network...

OBJECTIVES: Work engagement is an essential factor in improving employee performance. However, no reviews on the work engagement of psychiatric nurses have been conducted to date. This study aimed to examine the current status of research on the work engagement of psychiatric nurses and identify salient factors. DESIGN: A scoping review. METHODS: This review adhered to the established scoping review methodological guidelines and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews checklist...

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has called for improved surveillance of self-harm and suicide attempts worldwide to benefit suicide prevention programs. International comparisons of registrations are lacking, however, and there is a need for systematically collected, high-quality data across countries. The current study investigated healthcare professionals' perceptions of registration practices and their suggestions for ensuring high-quality registration of self-harm and suicide attempts...

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation (ED), the difficulty in modulating which emotions are felt, and when and how they are expressed or experienced, has been implicated in an array of psychological disorders. Despite potentially different manifestations depending on the disorder, this symptom is emerging as a transdiagnostic construct that can and should be targeted early, given the associations with various maladaptive behaviors as early as childhood and adolescence. As such, our goal was to investigate the psychotherapeutic interventions used to address ED and gauge their effectiveness, safety, and potential mechanisms across various populations...

The impact of caregiving on caregivers' mental health is typically considered within the caregiver stress and burden literature; however, more recently, research has investigated the experience of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in caregivers. As an emerging area of research, it is timely to conduct a scoping review to map the existing literature in relation to PTSS among adult caregivers of children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), neurocognitive disorders, and psychiatric disorders...

BACKGROUND: Less than half of community pharmacies in the United States stock buprenorphine products indicated for the treatment of opioid use disorder. This lack of access to buprenorphine in community pharmacies is a significant barrier to care. To address this issue, this protocol outlines a comprehensive approach to develop a practice guideline aimed at improving access to safe and effective opioid use disorder treatment in community pharmacies. METHODS: The guideline development process will proceed in three phases, following a technique closely aligned with the Institute of Medicine's guidance on guideline development...

Addiction nurses are highly skilled providers of holistic care and ensuring workforce sustainability is key to providing quality care to a traditionally marginalised group of healthcare consumers. The aim of this study was to explore perceived stigma towards the addiction nursing speciality, addiction nursing (also known as alcohol and other drug nursing) and its impact on workforce sustainability, retention and recruitment. Secondary analysis of qualitative interview data with nurses (n = 50) and survey data (n = 337) was conducted as part of a workforce mapping exercise in 2019...

Evidence suggests that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy (MDMA-AP) has therapeutic potential for treatment of psychiatric illness. We conducted the first comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of the side effects of MDMA-AP across indications. We also assessed the quality of side effects-reporting in published trials of MDMA-AP. PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, MEDLINE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were systematically searched. Phase 2 and 3 MDMA-AP studies were included; Phase 1 studies, which assessed MDMA without psychotherapy, were not...

This column shares lessons learned from a 1-year pilot implementation of a crisis response program deploying crisis professionals to rural parts of Albany County, New York. The data (325 crisis interventions for 191 unique individuals, 57% of cases resolved on the scene) suggest that the program helps fill the crisis services gap in these communities. Police were present on 80% of cases. Educating police to build confidence in the program and providing clearer guidelines on the triage process for dispatchers may be important strategies to continue shifting crisis response duties from traditional first responders to crisis professionals...

OBJECTIVE: Recreational cannabis legalization (RCL) is expanding rapidly. RCL's effects on mental health issues are of particular concern because cannabis use is more frequent among people receiving psychiatric care and is associated with several psychiatric disorders. The authors conducted a scoping review to examine the evidence and discern gaps in the literature concerning the effects of RCL on mental health and to assess the factors responsible for an observed heterogeneity in research results...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Understanding trends in the use of medications for secondary stroke prevention is crucial for identifying areas for improvement in stroke care. We examined the use of lipid-lowering, antihypertensive, glucose-lowering, oral anticoagulant, and antiplatelet medications after ischemic stroke hospitalization, from 2005 to 2021. METHODS: Using nationwide registries in Denmark, we identified a cohort of patients discharged from hospital with a first-time or recurrent ischemic stroke (N = 150,744)...

Restraint, often linked with limiting an individual's freedom of movement, has become a focal point of extensive discussion and evaluation within the realm of mental healthcare. Striking a delicate balance between ensuring individual safety and minimizing reliance on restraint methods poses a significant challenge. In mental health inpatient settings, the prevalent forms of restraint encompass physical, chemical, environmental, and psychological methods. Paradoxically, the consequences of employing restraint can be severe, ranging from injuries and cognitive decline to sedation and, in extreme cases, fatalities...

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are the most costly and prevalent psychiatric conditions. Recent calls emphasize a need for biomarkers-measurable, stable indicators of normal and abnormal processes and response to treatment or environmental agents-and, in particular, brain-based neuromarkers that will advance understanding of the neurobiological basis of SUDs and clinical practice. To develop neuromarkers, researchers must be grounded in evidence that a putative marker (i) is sensitive and specific to the psychological phenomenon of interest, (ii) constitutes a predictive model, and (iii) generalizes to novel observations (e...

BACKGROUND: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-established psychological therapy for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, based on the recommendations of clinical practice guidelines.
