Water stress can adversely affect seed germination and plant growth. Seed osmopriming is a pre-sowing treatment in which seeds are soaked in osmotic solutions to undergo the first stage of germination prior to radicle protrusion. Seed osmopriming enhances germination performance under stressful environmental conditions, making it an effective method to improve plant resistance and yield. This study analyzed the effect of seed osmopriming with polyethylene glycol (PEG) on seed germination and physiological parameters of Coronilla varia L...

Fast transport of monovalent ions is imperative in selective monovalent ion separation based on membranes. Here, we report the in situ growth of crown ether@UiO-66 membranes at a mild condition, where dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) or dibenzo-15-crown-5 is perfectly confined in the UiO-66 cavity. Crown ether@UiO-66 membranes exhibit enhanced monovalent ion transport rates and mono-/divalent ion selectivity, due to the combination of size sieving and interaction screening effects toward the complete monovalent ion dehydration...

A three-component condensation of 2-unsubstituted imidazole N -oxides, 3-ketonitriles, and aldehydes is described. The reaction proceeds via sequential Knoevenagel condensation/Michael addition under mild, catalyst-free conditions with various substrates. Furthermore, the corresponding 2-functionalized imidazole N -oxides can be further dehydrated to ( Z )-2-aroyl-3-(1 H -imidazol-2-yl)-acrylonitriles, which may also be directly prepared by changing the reaction conditions as a cascade of Knoevenagel condensation/Michael addition/dehydration...

Interfacial challenges in unconventional oil extraction include heavy oil-water-solid multiphase separation and corrosion inhibition. Herein, a novel strategy based on interfacial hydrogen bonding reconstruction is proposed for constructing multifunctional interfacially active materials (MIAMs) to address multi-interfacial separation needs. A simple one-pot method is applied to successfully synthesize four different MIAM varieties, integrating site groups (-NH2 , OSO, -COOH, and Si-O-Si) with multiple hydrogen bonds (HBs) into allyl polyether chains...

An economical one-pot, three-step reaction sequence of readily available 2-monosubstituted 1,3-diketones and 1,4-benzoquinones has been explored for the facile access of 2,3-dialkyl-5-hydroxybenzofurans. By using cheap K2 CO3 and conc. HCl as the reaction promoters, the reaction occurs smoothly via sequential Michael addition, aromatization, retro-Claisen, deacylation, hemiketalization, and dehydration processes under mild conditions in a practical manner. Additionally, an interesting phenomenon was observed during the derivatization studies, where the dihydroquinoline was converted into tetrahydroquinoline and quinoline products, respectively, via a disproportionation process...

The reaction of glycerol with CO2 to produce glycerol carbonate was performed successfully in the presence of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) supported by a metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed from mixed carboxylate (terephthalic acid and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid). The most efficient were two AuNPs@MOF catalysts prepared from pre-synthesized MOF impregnated with Au3+ salt and subsequently reduced to AuNPs using H2 (catalyst 4%Au(H2 )@MOF1) or reduced with NaBH4 (catalyst 4%Au@PEI-MOF1). Compared to existing catalysts, AuNPs@MOFs require simple preparation and operate under mild and sustainable conditions, i...

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects motor function and is often accompanied by secondary musculoskeletal issues. Severe scoliosis, a lateral curvature of the spine over 40 degrees, poses a significant challenge for individuals with CP, impacting their mobility and overall well-being. While the association between scoliosis and gastrointestinal complications is acknowledged, the occurrence of colonic volvulus with necrosis in the context of CP and severe scoliosis is rare and complex...

Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is one of the most life-threatening disorders resulting from adrenal cortex dysfunction. Symptoms and signs of AI are often nonspecific, and the diagnosis can be missed and lead to the development of AI with severe hypotension and hypovolemic shock. We report the case of a 13-year-old child admitted for cardiac arrest following severe hypovolemic shock. The patient initially presented with isolated mild abdominal pain and vomiting together with unexplained hyponatremia. He was discharged after an initial short hospitalization with rehydration but with persistent hyponatremia...

Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) can have an inherent vulnerability to dehydration. Younger children are unable to freely access water, and CKD aetiology and stage can associate with reduced kidney concentrating capacity, which can also impact risk. This article aims to review the risk factors and consequences of mild dehydration and underhydration in CKD, with a particular focus on evidence for risk of CKD progression. We discuss that assessment of dehydration in the CKD population is more challenging than in the healthy population, thus complicating the definition of adequate hydration and clinical research in this field...

Malaria can present with clinical manifestations overlapping with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). We present the case of a 55-year-old female who presented with abdominal pain, fever, confusion, dehydration, and recent travel to Nigeria. Laboratory investigations were remarkable for low hemoglobin, decreased platelets, and elevated lactate. Suspicion for TTP occurred when the patient's platelet count and hemoglobin progressively decreased along with acute kidney injury and confusion. There was an elevated ADAMTS13 antibody level and mildly reduced ADAMTS13 activity suggesting possible TTP...

This strategy provides an efficient and practical approach for accessing various sulfonated benzo[ b ]fluorenes in moderate to excellent yields under metal-free conditions. On the basis of the control experimental results and density functional theory calculations, a possible cascade transformation mechanism consisting of the dehydration of propargylic alcohols, sulfonylation, allenylation, and Schmittel-type cyclization is proposed...

Hydrogels are soft-wet materials with a hydrophilic three-dimensional network structure offering controllable stretchability, conductivity, and biocompatibility. However, traditional conductive hydrogels only operate in mild environments and exhibit poor environmental tolerance due to their high water content and hydrophilic network, which result in undesirable swelling, susceptibility to freezing at sub-zero temperatures, and structural dehydration through evaporation. The application range of conductive hydrogels is significantly restricted by these limitations...

Silica (SiO2 ), accounting for the main component of fly ash, plays a vital role in the heterogeneous formation of polychlorinated thianthrenes/dibenzothiophenes (PCTA/DTs) in high-temperature industrial processes. Silica clusters, as the basic units of silica, provide reasonable models to understand the general trends of complex surface reactions. Chlorothiophenols (CTPs) are the most crucial precursors for PCTA/DT formation. By employing density functional theory, this study examined the formation of 2-chlorothiophenolate from 2-CTP adsorbed on the dehydrated silica cluster ((SiO2 )3 ) and the hydroxylated silica cluster ((SiO2 )3 O2 H4 )...

An intramolecular electrochemical dehydration reaction of dicarboxylic acids to their cyclic anhydrides is presented. No conventional dehydration reagent is required. The obtained cyclic anhydrides are highly valuable reagents in organic synthesis, and in this report, we use them in-situ for acylation reactions of amines to synthesize amides...
