Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of peripheral artery disease (PAD). This study aimed to investigate the effect of clopidogrel on oxidative stress in PAD patients. Seventy subjects were divided into three groups: PAD patients before treatment (B-PAD), PAD patients after treatment with clopidogrel (A-PAD), and healthy controls. Serum levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and oxidized protein were measured. SOD activities were also determined. The results showed that SOD activities, and SOD specific activities were significantly decreased in PAD patients compared to healthy individuals...

PURPOSE: Patients hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) may have a higher risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF). The C2 HEST score was developed to evaluate the NOAF risk in the general population. Data on the value of the C2 HEST score in acute patients admitted with CAP are lacking. We want to establish the predictive value of C2 HEST score for NOAF in patients with CAP. METHODS: Patients with CAP enrolled in the SIXTUS cohort were enrolled...

Numerous studies have shown that oxidative stress plays an important role in peripheral artery disease (PAD). Prior reports suggested autonomic dysfunction in PAD. We hypothesized that responses of the autonomic nervous system and coronary tone would be impaired in patients with PAD during exposure to acute hyperoxia, an oxidative stressor. In 20 PAD patients and 16 healthy, sex and age-matched controls, beat-by-beat heart rate (HR, from ECG) and blood pressure (BP, with Finometer) were recorded for 10 minutes during room air breathing and 5 minutes of hyperoxia...

Atherosclerosis (AS) is recognized as a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the accumulation of lipids and inflammatory cells within the damaged walls of arterial vessels. It is a significant independent risk factor for ischemic cardiovascular disease, ischemic stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. Despite the availability of current treatments such as statins, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors, and lifestyle modifications for prevention, AS remains a leading cause of morbidity and economic burden worldwide...

AIM: The treadmill walking test with post-exercise pressure measurement can be used as a diagnostic test and could classify peripheral arterial disease of the lower limbs. It can also exclude the diagnosis allowing to raise the possibility of differential diagnoses. In this study, we assessed the feasibility of performing treadmill test by advanced practice nurse to assess suspected lower extremity peripheral artery disease patients. DESIGN AND METHOD: This is a longitudinal monocentric study to assess the feasibility of a treadmill walking test performed by an advanced practice nurse...

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has demonstrated its safety and efficacy in treating left main coronary artery disease (LM-CAD) in select patients. Polyvascular disease (PolyVD) is associated with adverse events in all-comers with CAD. However, there is little data examining the interplay between PolyVD and LM-PCI, which we sought to investigate in a retrospective single-center study. We included patients undergoing unprotected LM-PCI at a tertiary center from 2012-2019. The patient population was stratified based on the presence or absence of PolyVD (i...

INTRODUCTION: Foot problems, including musculoskeletal problems, peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease and dermatologic pathology are common in older adults and are associated with increased risk of falling. Multicomponent podiatry interventions have been shown to reduce the incidence of falls. This paper aims to identify older adults requiring podiatry input in a Falls and Balance clinic; to describe the model of foot health care they receive; to explore cross-sectional associations between foot problems and function and ultimately demonstrate the role of podiatry input in the multidisciplinary management of falls risk...

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is characterised by obstruction or narrowing of the large arteries of the lower limbs, usually caused by atheromatous plaques. Most people with PAD who experience intermittent leg pain (intermittent claudication) are typically treated with secondary prevention strategies, including medical management and exercise therapy. Lower limb revascularisation may be suitable for people with significant disability and those who do not show satisfactory improvement after conservative treatment...

Vascular diseases are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Despite having precursor conditions like peripheral arterial disease (PAD), they are often only diagnosed after the onset of stroke or heart attack. Low-cost, portable, noninvasive, point-of-care (POC), label-free assessment of deep vascular function benefits PAD diagnosis, especially in resource poor settings of the world. Doppler ultrasound-based blood flow measurements can diagnose PAD, albeit with limited sensitivity and specificity...

Atherosclerosis is a complex disease characterized by the accumulation of plaques in arterial walls. Understanding its pathogenesis remains incomplete, with factors like inflammation, oxidative stress, and hypertension playing critical roles. The disease exhibits preferential localization of plaques, with variability observed even within the same individual. Genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors contribute to its heterogeneity. Histological plaque phenotypes vary widely, prompting classification schemes focusing on systemic and local factors deteriorating fibrous caps...

Background: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a complex, heterogeneous condition that has become a leading health concern globally. Peripheral arterial disease often co-exists with other vascular disease states, including cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease. Optimal therapy for managing symptoms and progression of disease employs non-pharmacological, pharmacological, and contemporary revascularisation techniques to improve clinical outcomes and quality of life. However, large well-designed randomised control trials (RCT) and corresponding evidence-based guidelines for management of PAD are lacking, with current practice standards often extrapolated from evidence in coronary artery disease...

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is estimated to comprise about 290,560 new cases in 2022. Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are recommended as adjuvant treatment for estrogen-receptor positive (ER+) breast carcinoma in postmenopausal women, which includes approximately two-thirds of all women with breast cancer. AIs inhibit the peripheral conversion of androgens to estrogen by deactivation of the aromatase enzyme, leading to a reduction in serum estrogen level in postmenopausal women with ER+ breast carcinoma...

BACKGROUND: The proportion of heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction has been rising over the past decades and has coincided with increases in the prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The relationship between these interconnected comorbidities and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is still poorly understood. This study characterized obesity and metabolic syndrome among real-world patients with HFpEF. METHODS: We identified adults with heart failure in the Veradigm Cardiology Registry, previously the PINNACLE Registry, with a left ventricular ejection fraction measurement ≥ 50% between 01/01/2016 and 12/31/2019...

OBJECTIVES: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) is effective for treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); however, DBS is associated with neurosurgical risks. Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is a newer form of noninvasive (ie, nonsurgical) stimulation that can modulate deeper regions, such as the VC/VS. tFUS parameters have just begun to be studied and have often not been compared in the same participants. We explored the effects of three VC/VS tFUS protocols and an entorhinal cortex (ErC) tFUS session on the VC/VS and cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit (CSTC) in healthy individuals for later application to patients with OCD...

High levels of oxidant stress in the form of reactive oxidant species (ROS) are prevalent in the circulation and tissues in various types of cardiovascular disease including heart failure, hypertension, peripheral arterial disease, and stroke. Here we review the role of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), an important and widespread antioxidant and anti-inflammatory transcription factor that may contribute to the pathogenesis and maintenance of cardiovascular diseases. We review studies showing that downregulation of Nrf2 exacerbates heart failure, hypertension and autonomic function...
