BACKGROUND: Deformable registration is required to generate a time-integrated activity (TIA) map which is essential for voxel-based dosimetry. The conventional iterative registration algorithm using anatomical images (e.g., computed tomography (CT)) could result in registration errors in functional images (e.g., single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography (PET)). Various deep learning-based registration tools have been proposed, but studies specifically focused on the registration of serial hybrid images were not found...

Abnormal focal accumulation of 131I is generally a reliable indicator of differentiated thyroid cancer metastases. However, many examples of false-positive 131I uptake were reported, some of them of unusual nature. We report a case of 32-year-old man with differentiated thyroid cancer who underwent thyroid remnants ablation with radioiodine. An area of considerable 131I uptake projecting onto lateral cervical areas was detected on posttherapy planar whole-body scan. Neck SPECT/CT scan was done to elucidate localization of the uptake, and activity was found in the patient's beard...

Mild malformation of cortical development with oligodendroglial hyperplasia (MOGHE) is a recently proposed epileptogenic entity that is difficult to detect on MRI. We present a case of MOGHE that was successfully detected on T1WI-chemical shift-selective saturation (CHESS) MRI. The clinical presentation, MRI including T1WI-CHESS, functional images, and pathology findings of a 14-year-old Japanese girl diagnosed with MOGHE are described. T1WI-CHESS revealed an abnormal high signal along the affected lesion, whereas the findings shown by the other MR sequences were less obvious; interictal fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography indicated slightly decreased accumulation in the lesion, and subtraction ictal single photon emission computed tomography co-registered to MRI showed an increased blood flow...

Infective endocarditis is a continually evolving disease. Present-day patients differ significantly from those treated a few decades ago: they tend to be older and have more comorbidities and health care-related episodes, while new groups of patients have emerged with new types of endocarditis, such as those affecting patients with percutaneous valve prostheses. There have also been changes in diagnostic techniques. Although transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography are still the most commonly used imaging modalities, other techniques, such as 3-dimensional transesophageal ultrasound, cardiac computed tomography, and nuclear medicine tests (PET/CT and SPECT/CT), are increasingly used for diagnosing both the disease and its complications...

The dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia posits that elevated striatal dopamine functioning underlies the development of psychotic symptoms. Chronic exposure to social stressors increases psychosis risk, possibly by upregulating striatal dopamine functioning. Here we systematically review single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) studies that examined the relationship between chronic social stress exposure and in vivo striatal dopamine functioning in humans. We searched the scientific databases PubMed and PsycINFO from inception to August 2023...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Degeneration of the presynaptic nigrostriatal dopaminergic system is one of the main biological features of Parkinson disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and corticobasal degeneration (CBD), which can be measured using single-photon emission CT imaging for diagnostic purposes. Despite its widespread use in clinical practice and research, the diagnostic properties of presynaptic nigrostriatal dopaminergic (DAT) imaging in parkinsonism have never been evaluated against the diagnostic gold standard of neuropathology...

The role of dopamine in the pathophysiology of gambling disorder (GD) remains incompletely understood, with disparate research findings concerning presynaptic and postsynaptic structures and dopaminergic synthesis. The aim of this study was to investigate potential correlations between striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) lateralization and asymmetry index, as assessed by 123 I-FP-CIT SPECT, and temperamental traits, as measured by Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), in GD subjects. Significant associations were found between DAT binding asymmetries in the caudate and putamen and the temperamental dimensions of harm avoidance and novelty seeking...

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a challenge to diagnose and when missed, exposes patients to potentially fatal recurrent events. Beyond CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) and planar ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) scan, single photon emission CT (SPECT) V/Q emerged a new diagnostic modality of scintigraphic acquisition that has been reported to improve diagnostic performances. To date, no management outcome study or randomised trial evaluated an algorithm based on SPECT V/Q for PE diagnosis...

REVIEW
Gary J R Cook, Matthew P Thorpe
Bone metastases occur frequently in common malignancies such as breast and prostate cancer. They are responsible for considerable morbidity and skeletal-related events. Fortunately, there are now several systemic, focal, and targeted therapies that can improve quality and length of life, including radionuclide therapies. It is therefore important that bone metastases can be detected as early as possible and that treatment can be accurately and sensitively monitored. Several bone-specific and tumor-specific single-photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomography molecular imaging agents are available, for detection and monitoring response to systemic therapeutics, as well as theranostic agents to confirm target expression and predict response to radionuclide therapies...

A diagnosis of young-onset dementia can pose a significant challenge for the clinician. We present a young patient with a very unusual presentation of Dementia with Lewy Bodies. The lack of motor symptoms and his marked apathy delayed his diagnosis. His symptoms were thought to be due to depression based on normal structural imaging and the psychiatric nature of his presentation. An extensive work-up was performed. Evidence of a structural neurodegenerative process was provided by the HMPAO-SPECT. Cardiac MIBG confirmed the diagnosis...

Cotard's syndrome is a rare clinical condition characterized by the presence of nihilistic delusions, delusions of immortality, depressive mood, and anxiety. Longitudinal changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) obtained under different conditions with and without Cotard's syndrome have rarely been reported in the literature. We report a case of a patient with Cotard's syndrome in whom longitudinal rCBF was assessed using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The patient was a 52-year-old man suffering from schizophrenia and mild mental retardation...

OBJECTIVES: Psychosis, especially in delusions, greatly impairs the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and their caregivers. Few objective risk indicators of the association between psychosis and clinical features has been reported. It is unclear whether the reduction in DAT binding represents the underlying mechanism of delusion or its association. There are no long-term data on the objective prognostic value of DAT binding for delusions. We investigated whether DAT binding at baseline can be a prognostic risk factor for future development of PD delusions...
