Epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) is a rare type of focal motor seizure characterized by continuous, involuntary muscle contractions in a specific part of the body. These contractions usually involve rhythmic, twitching movements and can last for several hours to days. The seizures are usually limited to one part of the body and can be clonic or dystonic. EPC can affect people of all ages but is more common in children and adolescents. The pathophysiology of EPC is complex and depends on the cause. There are several possible causes of EPC including structural brain abnormalities, infections, metabolic and genetic disorders, inflammatory conditions, traumatic brain injury, and vascular causes...

Measles inclusion-body encephalitis (MIBE) is rare, with insights largely from case studies. We systematically analyzed subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE) cases in immunocompromised patients, identifying distinctive clinical and neuroimaging features. These findings could facilitate MIBE diagnosis without the need for brain biopsies. Our systematic review on MIBE and HIV-related SSPE adhered to PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO. We searched multiple databases and followed a detailed inclusion process with independent reviews and quality assessment...

Epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) is a rare type of focal motor status epilepticus that causes continuous muscle jerking in a specific part of the body. Experiencing this type of seizure, along with other seizure types, such as focal motor seizures and focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures, can result in a disabling situation. Non-invasive brain stimulation methods like transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) show promise in reducing seizure frequency (SF) when medications are ineffective. However, research on tDCS for EPC and related seizures is limited...

PURPOSE: To share our clinical experience with the diagnosis and management of children with hematolymphoid malignancies presenting with epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) as a sequelae of measles infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In December 2022, a series of children in our hemato-oncology unit presented with focal status epilepticus with no conclusive evidence pointing toward any underlying etiology. One such child had a typical measles rash a few weeks before the onset of this focal status epilepticus...

Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) is a rare prodrome of symptoms, including headaches, focal neurological deficits, seizures, or encephalopathy. Herein, we report a unique case of focal motor status epilepticus (Epilepsia partialis continua [EPC]). A 76-year-old male underwent right carotid stenting (CAS) for symptomatic high-grade stenosis. Immediately post-operation, he was recovering well without neurologic deficits; however, four days later, his blood pressure increased, and he experienced focal motor seizures involving the left arm and face without impaired awareness...

BACKGROUND: Bilateral Rasmussen encephalitis is a rare variant of a debilitating, typically unihemispheric disease with limited treatment options. Few cases with bilateral histopathology have been reported, all with poor seizure control following surgery. Here we report a favorable outcome following hemispherotomy in a four-year-old male with biopsy-confirmed bilateral disease. CASE: The patient presented with right hemispheric focal seizures with behavioral arrest and over a year progressed to left lower extremity clonic seizures, epilepsia partialis continua, and loss of ambulation, with transient response to steroids and tacrolimus...

Usually affecting one hemisphere of the brain, Rasmussen's encephalitis (RE) is a persistent inflammatory disease of unclear origin. Rasmussen and colleagues presumed a viral etiology of the sickness in their first description. Later, the condition was linked to autoantibodies that were in the blood. Recently, it was shown that the cause of RE was a cytotoxic T-cell reaction to neurons. RE may be identified histopathologically by cortical inflammation, neuronal degeneration, and cerebral hemispheric-specific gliosis...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Rasmussen's encephalitis (RE) is a rare chronic neurological disorder, characterized by unilateral inflammation of the cerebral cortex, refractory focal epilepsy or epilepsia partialis continua, hemiparesis, and progressive cognitive decline. Interleukin-1 (IL-1) plays an important role in neuroinflammation as a key element in the activation of the inflammatory IL-1β-IL-1 receptor type 1 (IL-1R1) axis. Anakinra, an IL-1 inhibitor, is successfully used in patients with new onset refractory status epilepticus and febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome...

OBJECTIVES: Hemimegalencephaly (HME) is a rare congenital brain malformation predominantly presenting with drug-resistant epilepsy. Hemispheric disconnective surgery is the mainstay of treatment, however, little is known about how postoperative outcomes compare across techniques. Thus, we present the largest single-center cohort of patients with HME who underwent epilepsy surgery and characterize outcomes. METHODS: This observational study included patients with HME at UCLA from 1984-2021...

In epilepsia partialis continua (EPC), the EEG tracings may fail to show epileptiform activity because the electrical activity is too subtle or too deep to be picked up by surface electrodes. EPC can occur at any age and may have many etiologies, including genetic, metabolic, structural, infectious, and idiopathic. Typical EEG in EPC is characterized by discharges of cortical origin that commonly consist of sharp waves, spikes or periodic lateralized epileptiform discharge; however, EEG findings at large are variable and often not even identified...

Anti-Hu antibodies are associated with autoimmune syndromes, mainly limbic encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, and painful sensory polyneuropathy (Denny-Brown). We report the case of a 15-year-old boy presenting with epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) found to have a right middle frontal gyrus brain lesion without atrophy or contralateral involvement. After partial resection, neuropathology revealed neuronal loss, reactive gliosis and astrocytosis, and perivascular mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate and features of neuronophagia resembling Rasmussen encephalitis...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patients with anti-GABA-A receptor encephalitis characteristically experience therapy-refractory epileptic seizures. General anesthesia is often required to terminate refractory status epilepticus. The immunologic mechanisms leading to antibody formation remain to be elucidated. Described triggers of anti-GABA-A autoimmunity are tumors, mainly thymomas, and herpes simplex encephalitis. METHODS: We present a young woman with prediagnosis of relapse remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), treated with interferons, natalizumab, and alemtuzumab...

OBJECTIVE: Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is a focal encephalitis, characterized by epilepsia partialis continua (EPC) with or without seizures and progressive unilateral deficits. Imaging characteristics of RE have been rarely described in detail in relation to EPC. So, the study aimed to explore if any relationship exists between the imaging characteristics and the presence or evolution of EPC in patients with RE. METHODS: This retrospective study included 11 patients with RE fulfilling the European consensus statement on RE followed between 2015 and 2020...

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-associated disease (MOGAD) is a rare, antibody-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) that has varying phenotypes. FLAIR (fluid-attenuated inversion recovery)-hyperintense Lesions in Anti-MOG-associated Encephalitis with Seizures (FLAMES) is a much rarer manifestation of cortical encephalitis encountered in MOGAD. We report a rare case of a nine-year-old girl who presented with a drop in her academic performance and right-sided Epilepsia partialis continua...

Mitochondrial tRNASer(UCN) is considered a hot-spot for non-syndromic and aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss. However, many patients have been described with more extensive neurological diseases, mainly including epilepsy, myoclonus, ataxia, and myopathy. We describe a novel homoplasmic m.7484A>G mutation in the tRNASer(UCN) gene affecting the third base of the anticodon triplet in a girl with profound intellectual disability, spastic tetraplegia, sensorineural hearing loss, a clinical history of epilepsia partialis continua and vomiting, typical of MELAS syndrome, leading to a myoclonic epilepticus status, and myopathy with severe COX deficiency at muscle biopsy...

New-onset epileptic seizures and status epilepticus (SE) are the most frequent neurological manifestations of non-ketotic hyperglycemia (NKH), an acute complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). Treatment consists of the correction of the underlying metabolic disorder, whereas anti-seizure medications (ASMs) may even worsen seizures. Evidence on NKH-related seizures is currently restricted to case reports and small case-series. We conducted a systematic review of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to provide a comprehensive description of NKH-related seizures...
