Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare syndrome in which Coxiella burnetii is a very infrequent etiology. We present the case of a 62-year-old male with progressive pulmonary infiltrates, fever, hepatitis, and bicytopenia despite broad spectrum antibiotics. A thorough clinical evaluation led to a high suspicion of Coxiella burnetii infection, subsequently confirmed through a positive serum polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. HLH diagnosis was established based on the fulfillment of 5/8 diagnostic criteria, obviating the need for a bone marrow biopsy...

The determination of Treponema -specific intrathecal immunoglobulin synthesis with the Treponema pallidum particle agglutination (TPPA) index is a well-established method recommended in German guidelines for the diagnosis of neurosyphilis. However, the TPPA test is no longer available. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the determination of a Treponema -specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) index can substitute the TPPA index. Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients with confirmed (n=6) and probable (n=3) neurosyphilis as well as patients with adequately treated syphilis without neurosyphilis (n=4) were investigated...

BACKGROUND: In the present study, we investigated the dynamics of immunity over time by measuring anti SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies and SARS-CoV-2 specific T-cell responses (interferon-gamma release assay) after two doses of vaccines in residents and health care workers (HCW). Mostly, 224 (98%) residents and 244 (89%) HCW received two doses of mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2, Pfizer-BioNTech); the rest of the participants received heterologous vaccinations with mRNA and vector vaccines. The study was conducted at the time when the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 prevailed...

Filarial diseases like lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis belong to the Neglected Tropical Diseases and remain a public health problem in endemic countries. Lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis can lead to stigmatizing pathologies and present a socio-economic burden for affected people and their endemic countries. Current treatment recommendations by the WHO include mass drug administration with ivermectin for the treatment of onchocerciasis and a combination of ivermectin, albendazole and diethylcarbamazine (DEC) for the treatment of lymphatic filariasis in areas that are not co-endemic for onchocerciasis or loiasis...

Carbapenems are considered the drugs of choice for first-line treatment of severe infections caused by carbapenem-susceptible, extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales, while piperacillin-tazobactam has been recommended as an alternative for treatment of non-severe infections. Temocillin is stable to ESBL and AmpC enzymes and may thus represent another treatment option. This study assessed the in vitro activity of piperacillin-tazobactam and temocillin against third-generation cephalosporin (3GC)-resistant Esch erichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae , as compared to 3GC-susceptible isolates of either species...

Epidemiological studies show an increasing number of patients worldwide suffering from chronic kidney diseases (CKD), which are associated with a risk for progression to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). CKD patients stage 2-5, patients with regular chronic dialysis treatment (hemo- or peritoneal dialysis), and patients suffering from kidney allograft dysfunction are at high risk to develop infections, e.g. urinary tract infections (UTI) and/or sepsis (urosepsis). These groups show metabolic disturbance, chronic inflammation, and impaired immunocompetence...

Influenza viruses of types A and B attack 5-10% of adults and 20-30% of children, thereby causing millions of acute respiratory infections in Germany annually. A significant number of these infections are associated with complications such as pneumonia and bacterial superinfections that need hospitalization and might lead to death. In addition to vaccines, drugs were developed that might support influenza prevention and that can be used to treat influenza patients. The timely application of anti-influenza drugs can inhibit virus replication, help reduce and shorten the symptoms, and prevent death as well as virus transmission...

Here, we report on the second case of bite wound infection by Canibacter oris . This bacterium belongs to the family of Microbacteriaceae in the order of Microbacterales in the class of Actinobacteria , which are prevalent in the oral flora. Possibly this bacterium has been overlooked until now, because it cannot be recognized by conventional differentiation methods. MALDI-TOF as well as PCR are able to identify this pathogen.

Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections worldwide. Under special circumstances, clinicians must rely on laboratory findings, which might have a weak predicting value, misguiding the practitioners and leading to incorrect diagnosis and overuse of antibiotics. Therefore, there is an urgent need for reliable biomarkers in UTIs. Methods: We performed a literature search for biomarkers used in UTIs from January 1999 until May 2020. We used "urinary tract infection" and "biomarker" as the main key words in the PubMed, Medline and Cochrane databases...
