Although the pathogenesis of paediatric-onset autoimmune hepatitis (pAIH) remains incompletely understood, genetic variants and environmental factors are known to be involved. Caspase recruitment domain family member 10 (CARD10) is a scaffold protein that participates in a complex pathway activating nuclear factor kappa-B (NFκB) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). This study aimed to investigate the association of CARD10 rs6000782 (g.37928186A > C) and TNF gene promoter rs1799724 (c.-1037C > T) variants with pAIH susceptibility in a cohort of Egyptian children...

Nitrophenols (such as o-nitrophenol (ONP), p-nitrophenol (PNP), and 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP)) are priority environmental pollutants. Their toxicity is pH dependent, and these molecular species of nitrophenols exhibit higher toxicity than their anionic counterparts. Herein, for the first time, a method for the in situ measurement of nitrophenols in acidic industrial wastewater was developed using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) with lignocellulose hazelnut shell-derived activated carbons (HSACs) as the binding agents...

Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate among cancers due to its aggressive biology and lack of effective treatment. Gemcitabine, the first line anticancer drug has reduced efficacy due to acquired resistance. The current study evaluates the toxicological effects of Orthosiphon stamineus ( O.s ) and its marker compound (rosmarinic acid) in combination with gemcitabine. O.s (200 or 400 mg/kg/day) and rosmarinic acid (32 mg/kg/day) were administered orally and gemcitabine (10 mg/kg/3 days) intraperitoneally either alone or in combination treatment for fourteen days...

The dysregulation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is associated with the development of various diseases. However, little is known about the regulatory function of lncRNAs in peritendinous fibrosis. Therefore, the expression profiles of lncRNAs and mRNAs in normal tendon and fibrotic peritendinous tissues were analyzed in this study using RNA sequencing. In total, 219 lncRNAs and 3403 mRNAs were identified that were differentially expressed between the two sets of tissues. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses revealed that the dysregulated mRNAs were mainly associated with immune regulation, inflammation, extracellular matrix (ECM) production and remodeling, and cell cycle regulation...

Repeated dose medication usually maximizes adverse effects, while sustained release systems did not offer a fast onset of action. Etodolac was formulated to enable pulsatile and sustained drug release, which was chronologically more suitable as an anti-inflammatory drug. Eudragit® RSPO, Eudragit® RLPO, and HPMC K15M were added in the sustained release layer and tried in different ratios. Croscarmellose sodium or sodium starch glycolate were used as superdisintegrants for the fast release layer offering the loading dose for rapid onset of drug action...

Aluminum (Al) is an element widely distributed in soils, even though Al3+ is one of the most detrimental cations to plant growth. The effect of nitric oxide (NO) precursors on indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) flow towards roots upon Al treatment is herein reported using two Triticum aestivum (wheat) cultivars with recognized differential Al tolerance. Roots of Al-tolerant seedlings with no treatment (control) accumulated higher amounts of NO than Al-sensitive ones. The treatment with Al further stimulated NO production in root cells while root exposure to NO3 - , L-arginine (Arg) or the NO donor S- nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) decreased both Al and lipid peroxide accumulation in both cultivars...

Nonspecific distribution and uncontrollable release of drugs in conventional drug delivery systems (CDDSs) have led to the development of smart nanocarrier-based drug delivery systems, which are also known as Smart Drug Delivery Systems (SDDSs). SDDSs can deliver drugs to the target sites with reduced dosage frequency and in a spatially controlled manner to mitigate the side effects experienced in CDDSs. Chemotherapy is widely used to treat cancer, which is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Site-specific drug delivery led to a keen interest in the SDDSs as an alternative to chemotherapy...

Natural fish bones, that are known to have unique adsorption capacity, have been used in the present work for removal of heavy metals, copper, and cobalt, from wastewater. It has been found that sorption process depends on the initial metal concentration and on the contact time. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) as a spectrochemical analytical technique was used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the water samples. X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), as another spectrochemical analytical method, was exploited to characterize the remediation of wastewater...

The use of polymeric materials (PMs) and polymeric films (PMFs) has increased in medicine and dentistry. This increasing interest is attributed to not only the excellent surfaces of PMs and PMFs but also their desired mechanical and biological properties, low production cost, and ease in processing, allowing them to be tailored for a wide range of applications. Specifically, PMs and PMFs are used in dentistry for their antimicrobial, drug delivery properties; in preventive, restorative and regenerative therapies; and for corrosion and friction reduction...

In this contribution, some textual portions of the Leonardo da Vinci's work were analyzed with the aim to highlight how, moving from Aristotle and going beyond him, he combines the intermediate positions that, from the Greek philosopher, passing through Buridan, arrive to Newton. This has been performed following a path that passes through the formulation of the principle of causality, the use of the concept of linear relationship (pyramidal law) between cause and effect and the introduction of a duration of the impression (memory) of mechanical systems...

Current popular cancer treatment options, include tumor surgery, chemotherapy, and hormonal treatment. These treatments are often associated with some inherent limitations. For instances, tumor surgery is not effective in mitigating metastases; the anticancer drugs used for chemotherapy can quickly spread throughout the body and is ineffective in killing metastatic cancer cells. Therefore, several drug delivery systems (DDS) have been developed to target tumor cells, and release active biomolecule at specific site to eliminate the side effects of anticancer drugs...

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced as by-products of several intracellular metabolic pathways and are reduced to more stable molecules by several protective pathways. The presence of high levels of ROS can be associated with disturbance of cell function and could lead to apoptosis. The presence of ROS within the physiological range has many effects on several signalling pathways. In stem cells, this role can range between keeping the potency of the naive stem cells to differentiation towards a certain lineage...
