Adolescent/young adult cancer survivors (AYACS) struggle with poor psychosocial health related to social disruptions due to cancer diagnosis, impacting long-term goal achievement and overall health. In particular, social health promotion is overlooked in AYACS' care. AYA-UNITE, a sociobehavioral exercise intervention pilot for AYACS 15-21 years of age at cancer diagnosis, was designed to foster AYACS' social and physical health. AYA-UNITE was a 12-week group-based virtual exercise program incorporating strength training and aerobic activity...

Adolescent and young adult cancer survivors (AYAs) are uniquely challenged with navigating health care systems during an important developmental phase of life. During the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, many people experienced social isolation, mental health symptoms, and schooling and employment changes, which may have affected vulnerable AYA cancer survivors. The purpose of this integrative review is to explore the psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on AYA cancer survivors in the United States...

The pathogenetic relationship between tattooing and the development of malignant melanoma has not been demonstrated yet, but there are numerous instances documented in the literature where both benign and malignant lesions have developed on tattoos. We report the case of a 39-year-old man with a melanoma that arose on a nevus on the back after tattooing. Since the identification of melanocytes lesions can be heavily hindered by large tattoos, implementing a dedicated screening process with regular monitoring of the tattooed region could be necessary to prevent potential diagnostic delays...

Purpose: Childhood cancer survivors have increased risk of cardiac late effects that can be potentially mitigated by physical activity and fitness. We aimed to (1) compare cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk between survivors and controls, and (2) examine whether the associations of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), and musculoskeletal fitness (MSF) with CVD risk factors differed between survivors and controls. Methods: Within the Physical Activity in Childhood Cancer Survivors (PACCS) study, we assessed CVD risk factors (android fat mass, systolic blood pressure [SBP], total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein [HDL]-cholesterol, and glycosylated hemoglobin) in 157 childhood cancer survivors and 113 age- and sex-matched controls aged 9-18 years...

Chemotherapy can cause many distressing side effects, potentially impacting treatment completion and quality of life in adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with cancer. To identify ways to help mitigate chemotherapy-related symptoms, we sought to elicit barriers and facilitators to managing symptoms experienced by AYAs with cancer through interviews. Qualitative thematic analysis identified three main domains: (1) managing chemotherapy symptoms (e.g., medication, home remedies), (2) anticipating and mitigating symptoms (e...

Participation in physical activity (PA) during and after cancer treatment is safe and beneficial in the adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer population. PA can positively impact health-related outcomes; however, participation remains low. This systematic review aims to describe PA intervention characteristics and outcomes in AYA survivors of cancer (AYASCa). This review followed Preferred Reporting Index for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and was registered with Prospero (CRD42022365661)...

Purpose: There is limited research on the psychological impact of cancer for teenagers and young adults (TYAs) and the role of protective factors such as resilience. This study investigated associations between resilience and psychosocial outcomes in this group. Methods: Data were collected from TYAs (aged 16-24) who attended the TYA cancer clinic at Guy's Hospital between 2013 and 2021. Participants ( N  = 63) completed psychosocial questionnaires within 4 weeks of their treatment start date ( T 1 ) and again between 9 and 15 months later ( T 2 )...

Childhood cancer survivors are recommended to have lifelong survivorship care, yet many become disengaged during pediatric to adult care transitions. We implemented a pilot clinic for adult survivors of pediatric or adolescent and young adult (AYA) leukemia transitioning to adult-focused survivorship care. The clinic featured AYA-specific care, bidirectional communication with primary care, and a quality improvement (QI) cycle. During the 1-year QI period, 27 patients were seen and 21 completed postvisit interviews...

Purpose: A complication of cancer-directed therapy that often goes undiscussed is infertility. Although guidelines recommend addressing the possibility of infertility and fertility preservation approaches before initiating treatment, an internal review at our institution showed only 49% of female patients had infertility risk counseling documented. As a result, a fertility assessment communication was added into all oncology treatment plans to improve rates of fertility discussion and documentation. Methods: This retrospective observational study included newly diagnosed patients of childbearing potential who initiated cancer-directed therapy between January 1, 2020, and October 31, 2021...

Purpose: Over 87,000 adolescents and young adults (AYAs) are diagnosed with cancer in the United States each year. Improvement in outcomes in the AYA population has lagged that of both younger and older patients. This decrement may be attributable to several factors, including insufficient supportive care services. Our team modified the Needs Assessment & Service Bridge (NA-SB) tool, utilizing an iterative approach with patient and clinician stakeholders to meet the needs of the AYA population at a large Midwestern Cancer Center...

Purpose: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with cancer have few opportunities to connect with patients of the same generation while hospitalized. Although anxiety is frequently reported by them, there are no reports on the psychological effectiveness of an in-hospital patient support program based on peer support. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a program, termed Adolescent and Young Adult Hiroba (AYA Hiroba), for anxiety in AYA patients with cancer. Methods: This single-center, prospective, observational study in 24 AYA patients with cancer was conducted at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Japan...

Purpose: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs, ages 15-39 years) are underrepresented in oncology clinical trials. Reasons for this include accessibility of the trial and whether the trial is presented to AYAs. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic not only amplified these enrollment challenges but also presented opportunities for improving the enrollment process through virtual methods such as electronic informed consent and teleconsent. While AYAs are well positioned to take advantage of these opportunities, the extent to which institutions utilize remote enrollment processes is unclear...

Purpose: Cancer and its treatments are known to compromise fertility in adolescents and young adults (AYAs). The emotional burden of possible infertility is reduced in those who receive supportive oncofertility care. In legal minors, provision of health care must consider the legal context and desire that AYAs have for autonomous decision-making, together with their competence to make health decisions. This has important implications for how oncofertility discussions may, or may not, involve parents. The aim of this study was to explore oncofertility decision-making and care experiences in a national Australian sample of AYA cancer patients and their parents...

Young adults (YAs), aged 18-39 years, with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) navigate life disruptions amid an unpredictable illness trajectory. We conducted a secondary analysis of patient-reported outcomes for hospitalized YAs with high-risk AML receiving intensive chemotherapy, collected during a multisite randomized clinical trial. Of the 160 patients, 14 (8.8%) were YAs. At week 2 of hospitalization, YAs demonstrated significant worse quality of life (β = -18.27; p  = 0.036), higher anxiety (β = 2...
